Halftime penalty???

Question

Posted

Game I was at during week 9 saw the white hat flag K 15 yards before the second half kickoff for not being on the field prior to the 3 min.  warmup period for the second half.  They showed up around 2:45. Rule 9-8-1.g.3 says "Be on the field following the conclusion of the halftime intermission or be ready to start the second half at the conclusion of the mandatory warm-up period." How was this correctly enforced if the team was ready to go at the start of the second half?

The rule is disjunctive. It’s Unsportsmanlike Conduct either to fail to be on the field at the conclusion of the intermission or to be ready to start the second half at the end of the 3 min. warmup.

This happened in 2015 between Mississinewa and Delta.  The game was played at Delta and the visitor's locker room was across the parking lot on the opposite side of the building where the game clock could not be seen.  Mississinewa ran/jogged all the way back to the locker room which took 2-3 minutes to get to and then ran/jogged back out but didn't make it to the field until all the time had ran out.  If I remember right, there was another penalty that was also enforced on the kickoff, so K team (which I think was Delta) kicked the ball off from the Mississinewa 40 yard line.  Mississienwa almost didn't go back to the locker room at the half, but it was Halloween night and it had rained, snowed, and very windy that night so the coach wanted to try to get some warmth in the players.

Not sure if Delta football locker rooms are still the same way or not now or if they even have game clocks in the locker rooms.  On a side note, Mississinewa updated all of the scoreboards at the Football/Soccer Field and in the Gym's and added game clocks to all the locker rooms.

They are still that way, like a lot of other schools that don't have locker rooms near the field and have to use the school. As a crew, we always have someone go up to the locker room and radio back when the players have made it in, then we start the halftime clock. We also have an official at the home and visitors locker rooms before the game and near the end of halftime so they know how much time is left to get back to the field.

Had a game many years ago - before the 3-minute warmup period was created - where the host school's band got onto the field late for its halftime performance (and it's one of those schools where the band has a LOT of sway), played its entire show, and kept on playing even though the clock hit zero. They got flagged for delay of game, home team coach was NOT happy.

Good job by the crew. If the field is not cleared in time, that’s a 5 yd. delay penalty on the home team. If the team is late, however, that’s a 15 yd. unsportsmanlike conduct foul.

Unfortunately when Mississinewa played at Delta, the officials had the clock started immediately.   Mississinewa had a coach watching the clock but by the time the team got to the locker room half of the time was off the clock.  Then they went to the bathroom, got a little warmth, pep talk, etc. it was time to head back out to the field.  Once they reached the field the clock was at 0.0 and penalty flag was thrown.

On a side note, Delta did a good size addition to the school and one would have thought that they would have come up with enough money to put a pole barn up that could have locker rooms for both teams in them.

I always tell BOTH HC's that I will NOT start the halftime clock UNTIL they reach the locker room door!.

I also tell both HC's at the pregame meeting:  At at the 3 minute mark of both pregame and halftime, we will knock on their door for them to get back on the field.  If for some reason they delay and do make it back in time.....well??

As for clearing the field (band/etc.) ...I've only had one occasion that I had to toss a flag.  The home team AD absolutely TOLD me to do so!  He had had enough of the Band Director's hijinks I guess.

Turned into a 15 yarder as both teams had to navigate the band doing their 'thang' for 20+minutes of a 15 minute published halftime.  Ugh.

I can see that too....but I was thinkin the royal blue band further south. 😄

That's a whole nother situation, as the stands tend to drain out after halftime.  Totally disgusts me.  "What did yawl come here to see?"

I've worked games where the football game was just a pre and post-band performance filler. The band attracts more fans than the football team.

At the school I was referring to, the band program put up more money than athletics to have the first artificial turf installed in this area. The band director took a level of pride in being disruptive to the football practices by kicking them off the field so the band could practice. My first year here, the AD was telling our coach what the plan was for start time and halftime. he was a prick about in telling us the game was not going to start on time. The officials for that night did not throw the flag at 7 pm.

Was told one time by an AD that our band won’t be off the field before the end of halftime, but you can’t flag us, nobody effs with our band.

Sounds like you need to send up the BFP symbol
