Finals Attendance, Streaming Views, and comments from The Commissioner

Below are state finals attendance figures, live streaming views results by class, and comments from Commissioner Bobby Cox:

"The reported attendance at Lucas Oil Stadium was 41,876.  Up from 2018 and fifth largest since the move to six classes.

Viewers on IHSAATV.org:

1A          13,768

3A          23,999

5A          59,301

2A          15,140

4A          39,771

6A          23,833

Total   175,812

Both television and internet viewership continues to grow in football annually.  This promotion and advancement has not impacted our attendance however allows the Association to promote our student athletes and schools and spread our messaging about sportsmanship, fair play and community."

Bobby Cox

Commissioner

Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc.

DT Comments :

The 5A viewership numbers are very impressive, as are the 4A results, indicating strong viewership from the north for Valpo and East Noble.  The North would strongly benefit from a Divisional split in class 6A by enrollment, which likely would drive increased game attendance and even stronger live streaming viewership as streaming continues to take hold across the state.

The morning games are getting low streaming viewership.

The 6A streaming numbers indicate that matchup redundancy might be impacting viewership of this game.

We agree on a lot but Carmel and CG’s proximity to LOS undoubtedly plays a significant role in the lack of streaming viewership.

Agreed. A split 6A would have still produced a Carmel/BD or Warren state finals game and then a Center Grove/pick whatever team up North blowout in the second game.

Just guessing, but it looked like the CG crowd was at least twice the size, likely more, than the Carmel crowd.

Really no surprise.

NP crowd was big as well.

CGs consistent success would land them in D1 due to SF promotion

In some years yes.

Carmel is now going south due to Elkhart consolidating. So get ready for a bevy of future 6A finals featuring CG/Warren/Carmel/BD beating a new 6A representative from the north by multiple scores.

No way do do it per class, but surely per session is out there?

Attendance on Saturday was 22,638 for a two-day total of 41,876 for the six games. That number is up slightly from last year's total of 41,538.

Saw this in a teaser for an Indy Star article for December 1 ... the article though was behind the firewall.  That would put Friday at around 19,238.

Edit: Here's the link in case anyone wanted it: https://www.indystar.com/restricted/?return=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.indystar.com%2Fstory%2Fsports%2Fhigh-school%2F2019%2F12%2F01%2F2019-indiana-high-school-football-state-finals-provide-drama-great-stories%2F4343907002%2F

So schools who competed on Friday have a combined enrollment of just over 5,000 (basically the equivalent of Carmel, lol) and schools that competed on Saturday have a combined enrollment of over 10,000 yet the attendance was a mere 3k difference?

Yikes.

Remember, a realignment is happening after next year. Carmel will likely always be on the north/south border. As Zionsville likely moves permanently into 6A.

I think Carmel is eventually going to permanently remain in the South with Elkhart and Zionsville becoming 6A schools. Have to remember that Valpo is a 6A school by enrollment but was pushed to 5A because of Columbus East. Valpo is likely back in 6A during the next cycle either due to enrollment or SF. If New Pal wins regional next year I believe they bump up to 6A and that could keep Carmel north, but I think Carmel will soon be a mainstay in the south bracket barring a bump up from a team like New Pal, Cathedral, or Columbus East.

Carmel will go north before Zionsville as Zionsville will be in sectional with Avon, Brownsburg and Pike.  It depends on the enrollment of the north schools at the next alignment as to what happens.

You thought 6A was boring now, wait until it’s a 4+ TD blowout next year.

Which teams had the most representation? It looked like Valpo, New Pal, and CG had very large crowds from what I could tell.

Ralph posted on Twitter that New Pal’s crowd was an estimated 6k+ on Friday night...

Their school districts border each other, but Carmel's school building is north of Zionsville's (barely).

It likely will be determined by sectional groupings (Z'ville is more likely to be grouped with its westside neighbors Pike & Brownsburg, while Carmel is more likely to be grouped with its Hamilton County neighbors, which would likely put Carmel north if one has to pick).

Snider (north) & Columbus East (south) are Success Factor schools who will go back to 5A unless they win a regional next year. Wouldn't be surprised to see Valpo get back to state in 5A and thus trigger the Success Factor and go north. A lot of their playmakers were juniors (and Valpo's enrollment has dropped below 2,000, which seems to be sending it to 5A long-term). For schools in Central Indiana, north/south is rarely permanent because it's determined by a *lot* of moving parts.

Maybe this should be its own topic, but simple responses would be appreciated...  After our game Saturday, our players were not allowed to come up from the locker room to the concourse to visit with family, etc. before loading onto the buses for the ride home.  In all previous appearances we were allowed to visit with our kids, take pictures, etc. before leaving Lucas Oil.  Security at the locker room doors were not allowing the kids to leave, including protesting when a coach was going to walk our young ball boys up to their parents (they obviously don't ride the team buses home).  We had to have our buses circle around LOS, stop on the south end of the LOS parking lot on the street and the players came into the parking lot to meet us briefly.  It was crazy.  Seemed to be directed by the LOS security.  Did anyone have this same experience?

after the trophy presentation and team pic, NP came to the sideline and sang the fight song.  And we were able to take pics.  That did not happen last year after the 5A game on Saturday night.

Wondering if this was a case that because there was a game after, and they were trying to clear everything for the next game, because we're talking 4A game vs. the last game of the day ... noted below.

There's almost always a Colts game on Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, so I can see that Lucas Oil might need the stadium cleared quickly on Saturday night so that workers can get the stadium ready (TV people run cable, set up booths, take up the hashmarks, clean the stadium, re-set the goalposts to NFL width, et al). However, I can tell you that we stayed on the air until the last players left the field Friday night, and the lights were being dimmed on the field as NP's last few players were leaving. We had a sideline reporter getting some postgame interviews and did a long postgame. As we were leaving, the stadium staff turned the lights out on the newspaper reporters still working in the press box.
