Personally, I hate gambling in all its forms (I’ve never even bought a lotto ticket personally….let alone bet on sports) and would prefer to keep it as far from HS sports as possible - even incidentally. To a point, every time folks predict scores here they are doing it to an extent. With that, you have Harrell’s page and, frankly, the Indy Star each week predicting scores. Still, it bothers me more than a little to see it here but, in the end, I’m not sure you prohibit it. Edit - I do have a ton of sympathy with DT’s view on this, though, but I think that this bridge was crossed a long time ago. Agree with everything you said. As Muda says, it's just a game, played by children. Good luck to all the young men around the state... point spreads be d@mned.

The curmudgeon inside of me trying desperately to get out would say that gambling represents a potential windfall, i.e., something valuable that can be gotten with little or no effort. The cynic in me says it’s the marketing that portrays gambling as an exciting and basically mainstream activity. A third reason is that for most of my youth, the government took steps to discourage gambling, e.g., prosecuting gambling offenses. Now, the government actually is in the gambling business. So, whatever stigma was associated with it has long since gone.

We should never reinforce any potential link between high school sports and gambling. Its just plain wrong. Hypothetical spreads ain’t hurting any high school kids. I would bet big money Peebles and Eric Moore don’t go into team meetings warning their kids off this site. As far as links of gambling you might want to raise issues with Vegas books as they put a line on the Massillon Washington-Canton McKinley game every year and no controversy from that ruining their rivalry in NE Ohio. Hell the books in Vegas put a line on Massillon Washington-Canton McKinley every year and there’s not many bigger rivalries than that. Nothing is ruined in that game from a simple point spread. Didn’t mean 2 replies, bad reception. All in fun though with these lines. Interesting to see someone else’s perception of Region games. Kyle Neddenriep predicts scores...not spreads. Sagarin doesn't predict scores, you have to use your math skills to figure it out. I think it's different to predict betting-like spreads. Granted, I know I'm probably in the minority here. It just seems unseemly. Every ad on TV is for a sportsbook. I am sure it's only a matter of time before there's some scandal in hs football. So, whatever stigma was associated with it has long since gone. Many years ago, back when Indiana first set up its State Lottery, I had found myself representing probably the two most influential Indiana based Democrat lobbyists as regards their commercial real estate requirements. At the time (late 80s), the Democrats controlled state government (yes, there was a time). Because of that these two lobbyists represented the two likeliest outside vendors to run it and I found myself ultimately representing the winning lotto vendor when they were selected by the state. I always found some irony in the fact that we knew from all of the studies that the state lottery system was/is basically a tax on the poor but it never seemed to bother them. I’ve often said that I was the first lottery winner because of that deal. But you are right, once the government got into the gambling business, all bets were off so to speak (pun intended). I remember my dad once mentioned, many years ago, that the lottery was created to help fund public education. Any merit to that, or did I hear him incorrectly? Any merit to that, or did I hear him incorrectly? That sounds like the mantra at the time but it’s been a while. My understanding is that today, after expenses, about 10% goes to teachers pensions and most of the rest goes to offsetting the lost tax income from when auto licensing fees where reduced.
