What if the sectionals were seeded?

Recommended Posts

I tried to take a crack one-man seeding committee, using Sagarin ratings, head-to-head matchups and other criteria a ratings committee might use. I would've pulled MaxPreps ratings in but I don't have unlimited time ;). This could be a fun exercise if we put a "seeding committee" together for each class.

Anyway, here goes.

Interesting. Now how far in advance would matchups need to determined? Sec 48 for example ND and SV play Friday. I think SV wins. If WW beats Salem they would move to 3 presumably and ND would fall to 5 or maybe even 6. Would coaches be ok with 5 days notice of who their opp is?

I would think if coaches had an idea of 2-3 teams who they might play, getting final confirmation on Saturday/Sunday for the next Friday would be ok.  Gone are the days of meeting an opposing coach in a truck stop or McDonald's parking lot to trade VHS tapes.  A few clicks, and film can shared digitally.

It's not much different for some regionals and semi-states already.  Team A can win Friday night and have to wait until Saturday night to know which team wins the other regional/semi state.

This is great, thanks for taking the time to put this together in a thoughtful, well reasoned way. Worst case, perhaps, is maybe a small, small number of teams that are one-off for whatever intangible reason.  Perfection is not a realistic outcome in a complex seeding scenario, but something like this is darn close.

Overall, this could certainly be sorted out with about 8 or so smart people putting their heads together over a few short hours the Saturday afternoon after week 9. Remotely. With computers. Over the interwebs.

However, the obvious fallacy to this entire exercise is that it clearly can work. And THAT, sir, will NOT do for the IHSAA. Just keep your ping-pong balls polished and make do like it's still 1985 and put the top four best teams on one side of the bracket and the bottom four worst teams on the other side like God Himself intended.

Now, pardon me while I go reserve my seat for the thriller of a Sectional 30 final that would be a running clock in the first half if it were allowed. It doesn't matter which two teams meet, the result will be the same.

But hey, at least 2-7 Washington will be able to hang that 2022-23 Sectional Finalist banner in the gym this winter (no offense Hatchets, but y'all gotta admit S30 is a f'g travesty).

Seriously though, this is great. Thanks again for compiling this!

I'd probably have committees meet preliminarily after Week 8 to create a rough seeding list and contingencies and then meet briefly the Saturday morning after Week 9, and announce the bracket either Saturday or Sunday evening. I know most coaching staffs get together to gameplan on Sunday mornings, so a Saturday announcement would probably be best, but as long as they're in place before practice begins, that's good. The ease of trading film via Hudl makes it a lot easier.

If you wanted to do it where it would be decided to drop around the time of the current ping-pong balls activity, you'd almost have to make the call based on first 7 weeks of the season ... first eight if the decision was made over the 8th week weekend and posted on the following Monday/Tuesday.  Wouldn't be perfect, but would be timely enough for locations that would be hosting.

Sectional 19:  Angola and EN do not play in the regular season so either I'm reading it wrong or you have an error there.

Coaches do watch tape on the weekend.  Some before the Saturday JV game.  According to the website Sagarin wasn't updated until 8:30pm Saturday.  You'd have to do it earlier than the weekend prior.

I think while its an interesting concept, seeding has its flaws as well just going off of the way in which they were decided here. Are we basing it off of regular season wins, sectional wins, sagarin rating, or a combination of all three? Are other factors involved? We've all one time or another said the sagarin ratings are flawed at times. For instance I hear time in and time out how the Summit conference has a weird sagarin rating due to all teams playing one another. There are also the teams that play out of state. That has to be taken into consideration if sagarin is the route you go. If you go regular season, you have a lot of 1 and 2A teams that play bigger schools that they probably won't win most years. If you go sectional record, not all teams play sectional opponents and if they do they may be the lower teams in the sectional that you don't want to see matched up in sectional anyway. If we want to seed sectionals, we might as well not have conferences and play each team in the sectional with two games played at the beginning of the season or end with more for sectionals that don't have 8 teams. That would be the one way I see sectionals getting seeded without controversy. Otherwise there are always going to be problems people have with seeding no matter how you decide to combine the previous three ways of seeding I mentioned above. While the ping pong balls don't fall the way people want them to year in and out, it adds a beauty to Indiana high school football that most states don't have. While its not ideal in most people's eyes, it keeps the blame of deciding who plays who from any one and places it on those gosh darn ping pong balls.

Not trying to bash on anything you did here crimsonace1. This is an interesting and debatable idea and thank you for taking the time to do this!

I don't think anyone is saying there will be a perfect system in any format - but what seeding does allow that the "blind draw" does not is giving credence to a good regular season. The regular season should mean SOMETHING.

Wrestling coaches have figured this out for years. You establish a criteria, and stick with it. Will there be some grumblings about who got the #1 or who got the #5...sure, but it sure as heck beats the alternative of having 1-8 playing 1-8 while 2 unbeaten play in the 1st round. And anyone who can't see that is just being stubborn.

Which brings me to my last point in all of this - unfortunately the IHSAA isn't going to take any action without the nudging of the IFCA...and unfortunately half of the coaches in the State won't support seeding, because they are hoping for that 2-7 vs. 1-8 and to be able to "sneak" into the 2nd round or Championship. Which, to me, is too bad.

Here is a crazy idea, what if the sectionals were not only seeded but what if you had to have a .500 record (or something like that) to be in the tournament at all?  Oh the horror!!!

Indeed, the regular season meaning something, there is a thought.

Nah, just keep the all in and use a system to seed it. Then the regular season still matters. Luers could definitely be below .500 and be a 2A champion. I'd compromise to even seed the tip half of each sectional and random draw the rest.
