One, I was hired by the athletic director to do it. Two, 28 years in professional media covering high school, college and professional sports in Indiana, 9 at newspapers, 19 in broadcasting. Former Indiana Sportscaster of the Year, Indiana Media Relations Director of the year, multi-time AP & Hoosier State Press Association award winner, former president of the Indiana Sportswriters & Sportscasters Association ... need any more qualifications? I have a pretty good handle on the media landscape in our state.7 points

So, you ever trust someone close to you for advice? Especially someone you might work with and see on a daily basis? Do you have a list of professionals those coaches should turn to whom you would 'deem worthy' of being asked such a question? Hang on for the merry go round ride he takes you on. 🤣3 points

Yes and no. I apologize ahead of time for the lengthy response but this is a hill I am willing to die on. That thought process is contributing to the mass exodus in our profession right now. I don't speak for every coach but I can tell you the job of a high school coach isn't an easy one. I love football and truly believe it is the greatest game there is. It saved my life and I have seen it save many more. That is what drew me to this vocation; the opportunity to have an impact on young people and make the world a better place. Coaches give a lot and will continue to give of themselves but I think the public at large is failing to reciprocate. Rather, we continue to add more and more to the plate of our coaches. Coaches wear many hats: teacher, coach, advocate, counselor, administrator, nutritionist, recruiting coordinator, social media promoter, and etc. AND we answer to everyone...our assistant coaches, administration, school board, teachers, players, parents, media, personal trainers, college coaches, and etc. Many people demand our time and that comes with the territory. If our players are going to be successful and get where they want to be then we have to find that time to give. I have answered those emails for DT before and for many other social media sites because I appreciate anyone that is taking the time to promote our kids. To be honest I don't respond enough to them and I need to be better. I have met with over 30 college coaches this off season promoting our players. This includes driving players on 3 visits and attending a recruiting clinic. I will be driving players to college spring ball practices in the coming months and hosting a college day on our campus in May. I have prepared a recruitment sheet for all 18 players that expressed interest in playing ball in college. I will do everything in my power to get a player to the next level. To give you a view of a typical week for a coach here are the duties I performed in the last 7 days. This does not include any family or grad school duties. ran weights before and after school. At the school building from 6am-6pm. taught school - my day job that pays the bills and has it's own set of standards and expectations offensive staff meeting Tuesday - If you have coached before you know those meetings are never short attended 2 athletic events to support our athletes visited 3 elementary schools for our reading program visited a middle school to pass out spring and summer schedules during their lunch periods promoted accomplishments by our football and weight programs on multiple social media sites attended a football clinic in Cincy on last Friday - was only able to stay for 4 hours due to an obligation at home but wanted to meet the new Valpo coach in person and see the Pitt DL coach who was incredible! 2 media interviews concerning new transfer rule and another media interview concerning concussions I tell you all of that to tell you that I am consistently told via social media that I am not doing enough to promote my players. Some of my players are being told, outside forces and handlers who stand to make a profit off of them, that I am also not doing enough to promote them. Maintaining a "we" over "me" culture is beginning to feel insurmountable at times which I believe is due to landscape of college football and now the landscape of Indiana high school football where we just opened the floodgates to allow more bad actors into the recruiting arena. We face constant scrutiny and negativity, even when we are winning. In the end you are what you put your time to. At some point every coach has to decide what that will be. I am a husband and a father of 4 boys. I am in grad school to prepare for a life after football to ensure my family can be provided for. My wife is a teacher and a coach. My kids play youth sports and I coach them when I can be there. My 8 year old is going through 1st communion preparation right now. My 5 year old is pumped to learn to ride his bike when it gets warm. My 4 year old starts baseball this spring. I still have one in diapers who will be diving into potty training soon. A lot of positive things. Things I hope each one of my players and students get to experience some day because a life full of love is the greatest gift we can receive. Please do not read this as a complaint as I wake up every day with gratitude for the blessing of being an educator and coach; I am truly blessed. I have always felt personal stories have power and I thought sharing mine here could create some empathy for my peers. I will keep fighting the good fight for as long as I can...but some day I will get tired and will have to make that decision on whether fighting the negativity is still worth my time as well. In the end I guess my point is...where would you put responding to an email for social media gratification on your list if you were me? I appreciate you all and everything you give to the game of football, even if it only opinions. There are some great people on this site and this site does matter. You are a part of the Indiana Football Community and our community is better for having you in it. God Bless2 points

I imagine most seniors are divided between 17 & 18 year old's. Not my first rodeo on the GID, but thanks. Been awhile since someone referred to me as "young man," but I'll take the compliment. Not sure what I said that was "hyperbole." If you don't think football coaches put in an "obscene" amount of time in relation to their time, then I'd say you're a little lost.1 point

Even if it passes, the counties would have to agree to join Indiana (rather than form their own state) AND Congress would have to approve (which it likely wouldn't).1 point

There's already a massive separation between Suburban Central Indiana the rest of 6a based on enrollment alone. I was hoping the new transfer rule would level the playing field a little more, but if the largest schools in the state are recruiting on top of the advantage they already have, then the gap between the top and bottom will remain. To each their own though. Do what you gotta do to get that state title. Just show a solid commitment to the kids who've been there from the beginning. If I'm a coach, I'm probably doing my recruiting at the middle school level. I'd never poach another coach's players. Middle school? They're all fair game.1 point

The interwebs tells me... Illinois is 10, 1, 4, 7 kickoff time Michigan is 9:30, 12:30, 4, 7 Those morning games are early wake-ups for those teams, even if you traveled the night before. Do they do awards on the field after the games? For reference, Indiana is 11, 3, 7...I still feel like that is tight sometimes, with the onfield awards and pregame warm up time.1 point

They value academics AND athletics at HSE, good for them! They're in the most competitive conference in the State according to most people's feelings on this forum. Gotta do what ya gotta do to compete, and those that don't well... 🤷♂️ HSE is the 3rd largest school in their conference. Idk if they're the last that should be "going after kids" (my verbiage would be admitting out of district students) especially when their last football state championship appearance was 20 years ago and their last boys basketball appearance was prior to 1993, if ever. Sounds to me like they could use an athlete or two... I appreciate schools who value BOTH academics AND athletics (extra-curriculars), HSE gets no hate from me.1 point

I would argue that a coach has more value to the world when teaching a game to so called "children" than he does at the college level. The amount of time they pour in for little financial reward speaks volumes to their commitment to society versus that of a college coach who does it for a seven figure salary. Wonders if if you would have called Jaylon Smith and Jack Kiser "children" to their face when they were 18 years old given the opportunity. Two hits, them hitting you, you hitting the ground (if they wanted to, which they wouldn't since they were fine young men at that age.) You must be bored this morning looking for a reason to come down on someone's post.1 point

I get what you're saying, but ... WW, Salem keep them. I think there's a good chance NH would keep them... there is 2-3 games.... Crawford would play them, undoubtedly. Henryville is getting football and would play them, Switzerland Co will. Trinity might have football soon. Clarksville, Perry Central, Mitchell... is Brown Co full of conference games? Maybe Scottsburg wants to keep them long term? That's quite a few options.1 point

Great read, but that was my favorite part. Most high school coaches are in it for the passion. They put in an obscene amount of time with very little financial reward. And the kids? Young men is probably a little more appropriate. Most of these 17 & 18 year old's are big enough and fast enough to give the fans an awarding experience, yet still have that innocence about them that many at the college level lack. What's not to love about high school football? It's a crime that 10,000 fans don't pack the stands in the bigger cities. Folks are missing out on some good football.1 point

Does Angel Skinner know that you were giving away your prized boat? Or did your next door neighbor's wife complain that it was an eye sore to the HOA and they impounded it? I need a new addition to my house so I can sleep under the stars when I want to lol.1 point

Official statement from East Washington School Corporation This is a great move for their athletic department as a whole. The reason they haven't done it in the past is because of the fear of the loss of the gates from other MSC team. Undoubtedly, they will still play most MSC schools in most sports. Plus, I think they'll find some great rivalries and gates by playing in the SAC (Borden, Henryville, Lanesville, Crothersville, New Washington and South Central (Elizabeth)). However, this move will benefit football the most. They can play Clarksville, PLAC teams and any of the MSC teams they still wish to play. I'm sure they'll maintain the West Washington and Salem games since they are county rivals. Good luck to the Musketeers.1 point

Having gotten to see some of the SB schools as NW plays them in the post season now (including SB St. Joe), I don't see many, if any, kids going to the nearby high schools for football reasons. Sitting in the visiting stands watching a playoff game in SB is quite sad. For a team to have 30ish kids on the team, there may be 20-30 people in the stands max...and that includes the folks sitting in front of the cheerleaders who are not there to watch football...rather the cheerleaders. As well as the 4-5 police officers sitting there. If a kids wants to go to Penn or Mishawaka or some other neighboring school, they have to get there on their own. They also have to get home in the evenings after practices. There is zero support from their families. I don't see how a kid could "transfer" without some support from their families (for transportation reasons). If kids wanted a better school for athletic reasons....with vouchers...if they wanted to leave their current public school...St. Joe and Marian are options...however that is not being taken advantage of either. While I am not a supporter of the arguments on the GID in realation to socioeconomics...in this case...that is the exact reason why kids won't transfer from the SB schools. NorthWood has benefited in sports due to kids coming into the Wanee school system...however...those kids have the support of family / friends to make it happen. I see this transfer rule actually effecting other schools in the area more than the SB schools such as Jimtown / Goshen / Wawasee. Those kids have family support and are...in my opinion...more likely to leave for an upward trending school rather than stay at their current schoo. Just my opinion1 point

Wow, the athletic department of a government high school the size of New Palestine has enough money for such an extravagance? I bet you feel lucky. Sounds like you could be doing better. Is this your retirement "gig"? Kind of like a Walmart greeter?0 points
