While there are times they have been, I cannot think of another program that is as consistently overrated as Florida State. They were still ranked 10th after the loss to Georgia Tech. And them being overrated goes back to the Bowden era. On a similar note, did anyone notice the number of empty seats last night? It looked like an IU crowd. Quote

There was no poll taken after the week zero game so their #10 ranking was just “leftover” from the preseason poll. They will not be ranked today. 2. Their stadium is under construction and all of those seats underneath the press box were off-limits. 1 1 Quote
Irishman Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 lololol Remember the exchange from Marley and Me, when Sebastian asks why is that funny? Sebastian says "I am just very immature". Seemed like the appropriate line to preface this: Quote

With Texas in the mix, it might get interesting. https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/ap-top-25-poll-texas-jumps-ohio-state-as-sec-makes-history-in-college-football-rankings/ Looking at the Top 15: Georgia, Texas and Ohio State are machines. Bama once again struggled with USF. Tide heads to Camp Randall on Saturday. Love seeing an SEC team come North. Would have been funner if they came in November, but it's still cool to see. Ole Miss and Mizzou both have scary offenses. Can Kiffin ever break through against the best of the SEC? Mizzou feels like a 10 win ceiling. Tennessee went into Charlotte and beat the crap out of NC State. I find that respectable. I also believe in Heupel who somehow morphed into a former OL. I would not be the least bit surprised to see Tennessee among the top 4 seeds. Penn State and Oregon. Penn State at least had a solid showing in Morgantown, but the Bowling Green game and Oregon's 2 games have been blah. Both teams are capable of a Top 4 seed, but neither are close to being there at this point. Miami got the complete opposite of ND out of the portal. Cam Ward is legit. Miami is way undervalued at 10. Lincoln Riley appears to have finally found a defense. That makes the Big Ten more interesting at the top as USC has an offense. Utah is the class of the Big 12 Oklahoma State and Kansas State provided a preview of what's to come in the Big 12: High scoring and close games. Typical Big 12. Oklahoma is overrated even at 15. I don't think Venables is long for Oklahoma. I think he's destined for mediocrity in the SEC. 1 Quote
Muda69 Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Kind of too early to start a College Football 2025 thread so I'll just leave this here. Another Pandora's Box has been opened: https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-nil-football-tickets-68d3b5f2f8f7e1d8d333e8897779e7e6 Quote KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee has announced a price hike for football tickets starting in 2025 with most of the increase going specifically to help pay players. The increase announced Tuesday morning in an email to season-ticket holders notes a new 10% talent fee for all invoices to “help fund the proposed revenue share” for athletes and help Tennessee attract and keep the best talent. A video link features athletic director Danny White explaining the reason for the price hike per seat across Neyland Stadium. “As the collegiate model changes, we have to remain flexible,” White said of the price hike, which includes a 4.5% increase on top of the 10% talent fee. “We have to continue leading the way. That connection between resources and competitiveness has never been tighter. Only now we have the ability to share these resources with our athletes. We can generate revenue that will go directly to our players. This will give our teams the best chance to be successful and bring championships home to Rocky Top.” ... "Talent Fee". Nice. Quote

Boilernation Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Some good games this week involving Top 25 teams. Friday: Virginia Tech at Miami: The ultimate bandwagon fandbase should be rockin' Hard Rock Casino on Friday night. MIami is must watch TV this year with Cam Ward. Hurricane games are funner to watch when their fans show up. Saturday: Louisville at Notre Dame: Rare opportunity this year for the Irish to get a Top 25 win. Brohm looking for an early big W at Louisville. Oklahoma at Auburn: Good chance the Sooners start out SEC play at 0-2. Wisconsin at USC: Yikes. I'm starting to understand the knocks on Riley. Fickel's goal for now has to be getting to the top of the 2nd tier. Mississippi State at Texas. I mean seriously. Ewers AND Arch at QB. Personally, I love when Texas is an Elite team. Illinois at Penn State: The Illini were impressive in Lincoln last Friday. Bilema has a real good, not great, team in Illinois. This is a sneaky big game for Franklin. Georgia at Alabama: Not many brands bigger than these in the modern era. A chance for the fresh fish to go knock out the bully very early and send a statement to the SEC. Washington State @ Boise State and Arizona @ Utah: Late night hangover option to loosely watch 1st Round NFL talent with the RB from Boise and the 6'5 WR 'Zona WR. Quote
Muda69 Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Ahh NIL, we love you so: https://apnews.com/article/unlv-sluka-59449174adffe0940266427158d964d3 Quote LAS VEGAS (AP) — UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka, a transfer who has led the Rebels to a 3-0 start, announced on social media Tuesday night he will not play in any more games this season, alluding to an unkept agreement struck during his recruitment to the school. NCAA redshirt rules allow players to retain a year of eligibility if they play four or fewer games in a season. Sluka, who played four seasons (2020-23) at Holy Cross before transferring to UNLV this past offseason, still has one more year of eligibility that he could use at another school next season. NCAA rules do not allow players to play for two schools within the same season. Sluka did not detail the reasons behind his decision, but college athletes are now routinely being paid for their name, image and likeness by companies or third-party organizations called collectives, which serve a particular school’s athletes. “I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled,” Sluka posted on X. “Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.” .... Translation: "Show me the money or I walk." I also came across this gem from last season, where a number of MSU players considered not suiting up against Iowa while the team was the hotel, due to NIL: https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/nil-story-bloomberg Quote ... A lot of this will be old hat, but the article uses the situation at MSU as a starting point in numerous respects. Some stuff I thought was interesting: • Just how bad it got with Michigan State and its Spartan Dawgs 4 Life collective a year ago. The team had a whole bunch of players who considered opting out of the Iowa game while the team was at the hotel. • "Michigan State isn’t one of the traditional football powers, such as the University of Alabama, the University of Georgia or the reigning national champions at Michigan." • "Coaches often swap what may be tall tales about outrageous player behavior. Two who declined to be named told the same story about a player who’d accepted $75,000 to commit to one school, $150,000 from another—and then enrolled at a third school." • OTOH why it did State have an insurrection last September? Still, the deal worried his father, because the offer included a clause that said “the company shall have the right in its sole discretion” to terminate the deal for any reason and at any time. (A spokesperson for SD4L says some of the contracts allowed for immediate termination and others provided for a 30-day notice.)..."This contract isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on,” Steve DePaepe, Andrew’s father, recalls telling his son, who replied: “Dad, they won’t pay me anything if I don’t sign it.” IOW competing on NIL means you have to (a) compete with other programs making stuff up and (b) write the contract in a way that the player can't find a loophole (or conversely compete with programs that don't bother to close their own loopholes). There's no standard for these contracts, so pretty much anything goes. The article touches on the fact that the NIL deals are with a third party, not the university, and even if the contracts are ironclad, if the collective goes bust, then the player is out of luck. This is the kind of the thing the NCAA should fix, but they're so FUBAR that LOL no. Not particularly shocking, but the details presented here are eye-opening. And it appears the Bloomberg article mentioned is behind a paywall. Bummer, sounded like an interesting read. Quote
Irishman Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 When I saw the play live, I thought simultaneous possession. In the initial reviews, I thought he caught it and then was forced out after he landed. One view from behind the goal post is what I think is the best view of a catch. If it had been called incomplete on the field, it would be hard to argue that call. BUT, it was called a TD on the field. I do not believe the replays rose to the level of "irrefutable evidence" to overturn the call. https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=41483100 2 Quote
Irishman Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 The stakes were pretty high in this game. If Miami loses, then the ACC does not have a top ten team. They could drop a couple spots even though this is a win. Quote
