How bout them Irish and Rocks? The season is early. Snider, Ben Davis, and Center Grove are in good company. Warren Central defense was as advertised, as was Snider's. Didn't think the disparity between HSE and Carroll would be as large as it was, then again, nor did I with Cathedral and Ben Davis. I still like Brownsburg at #1. I wanna say they were up on Dwenger 45-0 at the half. That's pretty good. The Saints might be down, but only a good team manhandles them like that. Quote

BDGiant93 Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 Ben Davis has not been thumped like that in a while. Cathedral is a really good football team with some very good size on both lines. They dominated the Giants up front and always called the right play all night. Kudos to Coach Peebles and the staff. Quote

I would probably go with Brownsburg but they play each other this week. I understand though why Brownsburg is not at the top spot after the Irish beat BD and Brownsburg's last few years of regular season play coupled with tournament woes. I think the Irish will be fine, they are solid on defense and have a very good running game. Their QB aside from a tipped pass played well in his first start. The Irish can still peak as their QB gains more confidence and experience getting comfortable and their O-line gets healthy. Solid list you have put together for sure. This Friday's Brownsburg vs Cathedral at Marion College will be interesting Quote

Cathedral and Westfield had the two most impressive wins state wide Friday night over proven programs. 1 1 Quote

Looks pretty solid though. Quote

BLACKGOLD2007 Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 That Penn Valpo game was hard to watch from a defensive stand point. Both Offensive teams had their way. Penn was able to force 6 punts and stop Valpo in the last seconds. But, Valpo had multiple long scoring plays (as did Penn) and Valpo was able to score twice inside the 10 yard line on 4th down. I think Penn will be dangerous from the QB position, he is fast and a great runner. He has some touch issues on his passing but that can be cleaned up over time. Valpo's young QB looked good under pressure. He is able to move the ball with his feet, but has a good arm. I think the lack of D is concerning for both teams. Penn has the benefit of playing no one after week 2 (Sorry NIC friends) while Valpo has Merrillville and CP still to compete with. Valpo will be a player in 5A north if they get their D sorted out. That was the case at North Side for years. They just drew a line down the 50 yard line. It was annoying sitting right next to someone cheering for the other team, but it never caused any problems...........that I know of anyway. I'm not sure I've been to 10 games there over the years. They now have visitor seating. 1 Quote

I think Snider at 10, after playing Warren to a 15-0 L is fair. Carmel still has to prove they are better than the past couple years. Other wise those are the only changes I would make. Quote

Mixed bag after watching Ben Davis Friday night. Their offense didn't look that bad despite not scoring a single point. QB has a very good arm and for the most part played very well. A couple fluky turnovers and some costly penalties were some real drive killers. They ended up throwing a ton, likely out of necessity due to the score, but they never really attempted to establish a run game which I thought was odd given it was a close game through most the first half. But I was thoroughly unimpressed with their defense which I figured would have been their strong suit. They were bullied up front by a young (and hurt) Cathedral offensive line. And that's with Cathedral committing to the run all night due to an inexperienced QB who wasn't a threat to drive the ball down the field. All in all they will most likely be fine going forward. Is Ben Davis also young on the Defensive side of the ball? I think they will over come some of these short comings as the season progresses, but I currently think BD could drop 2 or 3 more games this year, if they don't. The nice thing about being exposed week 1, is there are 8 weeks to work on fixing these issues. Penn's D gave up 500 plus yards of offense to Valpo and 42 points....now they were on the field all night because Penn couldn't sustain a drive...because they were scoring every few plays. The benefit Penn has is they play no one after week 2. So, lots of opportunities to improve...but that doesn't bode well for their inevitable match-up with CP. Quote

Not sure collectively but do know they have an Illinois commit at DT who started last year and another returning starter at DE who lead the team in sacks last year. And obviously they have ND commit Mark Zackery in the secondary who is widely considered to be the best player in the state. But I also think it's fair to say they missed Nylan Brown out there a lot. 1 Quote

The front 7 is pretty young from an on-field play standpoint. Offensive and defensive line play was a real struggle Friday night from my perspective. Kind of disappointing, but Cathedral was really good on Friday. Quote

I woudn't be surprised if some of the teams who travel well will stop agreeing to home and "home" with Cathedral if the Irish can't find stadiums to use with ample visitor side seating. 1 Quote
