I heard on the Irish radio broadcast last night (game vs Ben Davis) that all of Cathedral's regular season home games will be played at either Butler Bowl or Marian College?   Is Arlington finally deep-sixed?  With the recent history of so many opposing schools refusing to play at that venue it would not surprise me if the lights are turned off for good.

I would think that lighting issue from a couple of years ago that forced the postponement of the Chatard-Cathedral game was a factor. I'm not sure the Irish have been back there since. I know Ben Davis played them at Key Stadium at UIndy last year.

The lighting issue game with Chatard was last year.  Probably cost Cathedral a win.

Still wondering if you got at least a new vehicle for using the old wire cutters on the lights. Or was  it the old Macgyver trick with a paper clip.

All kidding aside hope you are doing well.

Arlington just had too many upkeep problems.  The field was not really as big an issue as some thought, but the infrastructure needed much work and proved too costly.  It's a shame that Cathedral can't seem to have a home field.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but was there any way that Cathedral could buy that part of the Arlington property and put in a field that they would use?

On google maps, it looks like Cathedral has a football field on campus with artificial turf. Why can't they build seating and play there? It is buffered from the  nearby neighbors by a lot of trees.

Neighborhood ordinance is the driving factor but parking would be an utter disaster.

I’d actually heard that was a possible consideration.  Alternatively, I’ve heard buying the Devington Shopping Center either alone or in conjunction with tge Arlington field was a consideration.  I’ve little doubt Devington could be bought.

Cathedral has an exploratory committee currently ongoing after the disaster with Lightgate last year. Arlington is still in the mix as 1 of 3 possibilities. Then we only have to raise $20mm. I'll start a Go Fund Me shortly..

Must be giving out too many scholarships 🙄

Truthfully, I’m thinking that will require just a handful of phone calls once some direction is set.  Not to say public contributions won’t be sought but once a deal is identified, I’d expect it to be pinned down fairly easily from a financial perspective.

The hard part, as always, is finding the deal that works for all those involved….Cathedral, the Seller, the city (from every pain in the @ss/refusenik departmental  perspective), IPS (if they’re involved) and the community.

Cathedral owns the old Little League regional HQ off Mitthoeffer and plays its baseball and softball games there. I understand they're adding a turf field for soccer/lacrosse at the facility. The cost for adding stands/press box/infrastructure for varsity football would be somewhat steep but they already own the land and there's plenty of parking (though I'm not sure there's enough for a varsity football game) at the facility. Curious if that would be a more permanent option in the future.

Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger had a turf field to practice on for several years but no stands due to the Archdiocese and community saying that there wasn't enough room for visiting stands due to the close proximity of the road on the visitor's side. The school leadership had enough pressure to push the installation of stands on both sides of the existing field that they found out there was enough room for visiting stands, although small but it is big enough, along with a large home stand.

Never been to Dwenger’s campus so can’t speculate, but there’s a massive ravine in a heavily wooded area on the north side of Cathedral’s practice field that makes installing bleachers next to impossible. And even in the event bleachers were to go up, it still doesn’t solve the parking issue. There isn’t enough parking spots for the 500-600 students that are eligible to drive to school, let alone an additional 3-4k people to attend a game. Parking on 56th street isn’t practical, let alone legal.

Still does not negate the neighborhood surrounding Cathedral that has an ordinance for no lights on the field. Having a field on campus isn't the issue, building stands isn't an issue (though it would take some forward planning). The issue is logistics of parking up on the hill (very limited) and the neighborhood surrounding that does not want the disturbance with the lights etc.

Totally understand your's and FB16's comments about parking and neighborhood ordinances.  Did Chatard used to have the same barrier as far as city ordinances mainly due to lighting?  If so, wonder how they got around that eventually and added lights?  I do know today's LED lighting technology is more directional and produces less "lighting pollution".  But realize that even if got past that, parking would be an extreme challenge.....

Chatard eventually beat the city ordinance. However, Chatard being located in the heart of Broad Ripple, had accessible public parking all up and down the neighboring streets.

I totally agree...I know parking is a real barrier.

How about throwing in a large parking garage??  😉

I don't know that Chatard had any ordinace on lighting to fight. Just across Kessler a few blocks North is the field of Champions of Broad Ripple High School. They had lights up at Broad Ripple. So the lights probably was a non-issue at Chatard. It was likely more of raising funds etc. since they are an Archdiocese High School, probably had a few more hoops to jump through.

Neighborhood around Cathedral is a little different and Cathedral is up on the hill

Historically, my Chatard football friends told me that lighting was a major issue to overcome.  I just took their word for it.

I am familar with both locations.  That is why I totally get the Cathedral parking challenges.  I also had children that participated in sporting events (JV) at CHS on the turf field and in the gym.
