I honestly think Penn State thought they could pry Elko from A&M, bringing him home back East. I believe they made a run at Drinkwitz at Missouri as well. I'm convinced that Jimmy Sexton is purposefully sabotaging Penn State with they way they did James Franklin who is also a CAA client. At least 3 different Sexton/CAA clients have all leveraged Penn State for extensions and raises.

Wow, a new career for BK.  Of course he'd have to work on not having a personality.  Show biz folks must be personable.

What made it so much worse is the kid knew before his visit he was not going to LSU. I believe he ended up at Alabama. But he put Kelly through that knowing he was not going there.

So, Brian was gullible too?

Well, if he did have any question in his mind about LSU, that most likely closed the deal....

He was scarred after that experience....heck, I am just watching it!!

I wonder if he’ll feel the same way if UGA blows them out in the SEC championship game and they miss the playoffs?

Great question.....

Given Penn State's current recruiting class, he still may.  But money always wins.....

Looks like Matt Campbell is the next vic......errrrr coach.

Welp, Looks like Pitt is the new leader of the Pack in PA!

If you have NO successor lined up; you DON'T fire your HC mid-season!  The Nittany Lions are now officially:  Irrelevant for a while in the BIG10 (or 14-22 whatever) 🤯

And how is Matt Campbell's resume better than they guy they fired?

It's not. The fact is the school jumped the gun thinking people would be knocking the doors down to get the job. Instead, a number of schools stepped up to keep the coaches they have; to the tune of a combined $370.8 Million.

I think the lesson learned here is that you better have a target and know that there's, at minimum, a 95% chance you're going to land your target before firing your head coach. But you're right, they probably thought that if they couldn't get Cignetti or Elko, other top prospects would be breaking down the door. Something tells me Matt Campbell is going to get swallowed up in the B1G. Stock on Penn State is WAY down.

@Komets2727 pointed out in another topic; a program can quickly turn if they are willing to put up the cash to get top talent in. Penn State is one of those programs that could generate the kind of money to quickly rebuild. But to get a few players in to begin with, any program will likely have to pay beyond the normal value to seal the deal.

At the end of the day, you're recruiting class is still the bread and butter of the program. That's where Penn State is going to struggle.........at least for a year anyway. And honestly, there's not a coach in the country that can do what Cignetti did with the precision that he did it at. I'm still going to say "stock down." This whole thing just has a bad vibe to it.

I just wonder if they will lose more in the portal. Guess the current roster wanted DC Smith. Micah Parsons stated he would not return to the school if they passed on Smith.

I agree that they will struggle. For how long? Not sure. I do think Cignetti is a great coach, but even he has relied Cignificantly on the portal. He had a really good thing going at JMU and it has really helped him at IU.
But this is the part that is unsustainable. Let's say Penn State hits the portal hard and spends a good $40 Million to get a solid roster and become a competitive team right away. Now the next teams in their spot will have to spend more.

I think Michigan State becomes a player quickly, $390 million dollars donated to the athletic program. They will be deep into the portal and now they have Fitzgerald as head coach
