Mr. Football Finalists

Recommended Posts

Where is Mason going to school next season and is he planning on playing football?  That kid can sling the rock and his size alone should put him on the radar for college programs.  Bowen is a beast also.  I love to see the small schools get some love in this Mr. Football award.  Those guys could be stars at any level in HS.

I think it will be Bowen.

Here are some stats:

1. 220/336 (65.6% completion) - 2,911 yards, 29 TDs, 11 INTs. State runner-up, state champ Jr/ Sr year

2. 247/386 (64% completion) - 3,868 yards, 51 TDs, 7 INTs. State champ, State Runner-up Jr/Sr year

If Michael Lindauer (stat line #2) didn't win Mr. Football, Wunderlich (#1) probably won't either.

And if it wasn't for some Karlaftis guy currently running around KC, Lindauer would have been 2 time state champ.

Wunderlich was really impressive to me at the state finals. As soon as I saw him during warmups I thought he looked like a different player than the year prior, and he played like a different player too. Some of the throws he made in that game were downright elite. I know he visited Wisconsin last year, does anyone know if anything came from that? With the caliber of some of the QB play I've seen in the Big Ten the past few years, I don't see why a team like the Badgers or Iowa wouldn't take him. Kid has the size, arm talent, and (from an outsider's perspective) the intangibles to be successful at a high level.

Not a bad final 3 that season

1 Kiser

2 Bell

3 Lindauer

also in the mix Romeir Elliot.

I think he has a couple NAIA opportunities but maybe more will come with this recognition.

Official visit? Or a Junior invite day?  Huge difference. 75% of players do Junior days at the bigger schools.

It's certainly debatable.

Obviously offensive scheme has an effect on overall stats. A QB for a more running focused offense won't have the same passing stats as a QB who plays in a more heavily relied on passing game. By no means am I saying he isn't a great QB, because he is, no doubt.

Just for the sake of debate, plus it is a long offseason. Here are the stats (pulled from MaxPreps) for each of the 3 QBs selected to the SIAC All-Conference teams.

(Wunderlich first team QB, Fisher second team QB, Hunt first team at large)

Wunderlich (Mater Dei - 15 games played) - 2,911 passing yards, 29 TDs, 9 INTs   291 rushing yards, 6 Tds    3,202 total yards, 35 total TDs

Per Game Stats: 194 passing yards per game, 19 rushing yards per game, 231 total yards per game

Fisher (Ev. Memorial - 11 games played) - 1,830 passing yards, 15 TDs, 10 INTs     -36 rushing yards, 1 TD    1,794 total yards, 16 total TDs

Per Game Stats: 166 passing yards per game, -3 rushing yards per game, 163 total yards per game

Hunt (VL - 10 games played) -  1,464 passing yards, 10 TDs, 7 INTs    908 rushing yards, 13 TDs    2,372 total yards, 23 total TDs

Per Game Stats: 146 passing yards per game, 91 rushing yards per game, 237 total yards per game

This isn't even accounting for the QB from Reitz who got hurt and missed several games, or the fact Castle played two different QBs. Who knows how their stats would have been affected had they played an entire season, instead of splitting reps.

Inconsequential really. In my opinion this award is going to Bowen, the only person I felt had a legit battle with Bowen was Hansen from Roncalli. You have to win the position award to be in the running. Hansen didn't win the position award so he is not eligible. Coyle great kid had a great season very fortunate to get the position award, but this one is Bowen's award hands down.
