Smitty was a pledge brother of mine at Ball State. I've been stunned all day. Just the absolute best dude in the world and will be sorely missed! He was the type who made the trip to Indy for the State Finals every year regardless of who was playing... and made time to hook up with us Indy Sig Eps when he did. My heart and prayers go out to his wife and his boys (affectionately known as the Nutball Brothers) as well as his entire family!

I think we are going to see a very normal football season this fall. Indiana Covid-19 numbers are declining rapidly while the number of people vaccinated is increasing just as fast. I think we are going to lose our mask mandate soon and have a normal summer and fall season. Cant wait!

For the second consecutive year, the Lady Miners of Linton take home a state championship. Last year the final score was 70 - 28. The 28 points was a tournament record in a state final as was the 43 point win in a state final. This year (defensively) they were even better by the score of 63 - 25. I said last year I was impressed with the Miners defense but this year I think it was even better. They had 18 steals in the game tonight. They only lost 1 game all year to 4A Bedford North Lawrence so they set a school record for wins and losses. These past 2 years have been a great ride with these ladies. I wish them the best in their futures and thank them for the pleasure it's been to watch them play. I think this is the best team defense I've ever seen at any level, men or women. They were a machine.

Did not know him but I live in the community and the reaction from those on social media who knew him is pretty overwhelming. He clearly meant alot to many people. Prayers to his family, including his wife and two sons. I can't even imagine.

We used to do this with Little Gridiron, although it was usually college students. The issue we ran into was inconsistency and, in some cases, absenteeism of some or all officials. The league decided at that point to spend the money and go with Friday-night refs. This happened at least by and probably before the 2002 season when I first coached in LGI. The result was great as, even though it was youth games, the professionalism from the crews elevated the feel of the game for the kids and the fans. Also, the crews that we had were really good in not just doing their jobs, but also helping to educate the kids and the coaches. They provided enough firmness to keep the game controlled while also enough "soft touch" to not discourage the kids and make the game drag on. One thing that our crews expanded to doing was bringing in some of the younger/newer officials. We'd typically get a three-man crew and sometimes that would be two "old-timers" with a new guy who was getting "extra reps." It was a nice opportunity to get a really good service while also getting the extra care from the refs and also giving them an opportunity to also train the new and upcoming guys. Yep. Sundays were much easier for scheduling refs ... and also for getting the stadiums.

History. Mixing the legislative and judicial branches like that is not a good idea, IMHO. And again, the federal government should have no business deciding how a state decides what geographical areas its representatives represent. Without geographical districts who exactly would a member of the house of representatives represent? A call comes in from a state citizen and then a wheel is spun to decide what representative's office takes the call?

Sorry, these "independent commissions", whose members will most likely be appointed by politicians in Washington, will be anything but "independent". They will be as politically motivated as anything done at the state level.

I wonder when they will come for more traditional literature that contains historically accurate racial situations ... which more enlightened generations have discarded. I’m thinking specifically of one of the greatest pieces of literature in the English language: Huckelberry Finn.

Saturday college football is probably not a significant contributor to the officiating shortage. There are 20 college FB programs in Indiana. 10 of them are FBS or FCS and, typically, the officials who work those contests do not work high school football. That leaves 10 programs at the D2, D3 and NAIA levels, meaning that there are 5 such games in Indiana every Saturday, on average. Of those 35-40 officials, there are at least some who do not also work high school football. So, on the average Saturday, there are approximately 30 licensed high school officials removed from the pool of nearly 1,000 licensed officials available to work. There are plenty of reasons there is an officials shortage on Saturdays, but college FB officiating is not a significant contributor to that problem.

What it means is their basketball coaching situation sucks.

What an interesting week for the SWIAC teams in their sectionals... Sectional 63 ... The lone conference team was the SWIAC Champion North Daviess Cougars... who had the hardest road to a sectional crown. A first game against Barr-Reeve followed by a potential championship game against Loogootee. Unfortunately, the Cougars lost 40-38 to the Vikings. The winner of this sectional will be expected to make a deep run. Barr-Reeve ended up defeating the Lions. Sectional 57... WRV was able to play 2 games which ended up being a big deal for Andrew Ellett who scored his 1,000 point. A first round win was nice for the Wolverines, but the Shakamak Lakers put them out in round 2. Bloomfield was probably favored to win the sectional... they took care of business against Clay City in round 1. The semi final round was against possibly the only team that seemed to have the horses to play with the Cardinals. I thought it was a long shot, but at least a possibility. The T-Birds not only beat the Cardinals, but by double digits. Word was Clark had a big game for North Central. Shakamak came into the sectional playing better basketball, but they still were a longshot. WRV in the semifinal was not a given. WRV posed potential problems if Ellett had a big game. I still don't think the Lakers would have any chance to defeat Bloomfield... but North Central... maybe. Matchups matter... and the Lakers got their perfect Championship game. Congratulations on the Lakers for a great Sectional title. Congratulations to the Lakers as they will travel to Martinsville to take on Indianapolis Tindley Sectional 47... Linton was the favorite, but also had the toughest road. South Knox, Eastern, and North Knox were on the slate to win their 3rd straight crown. Each team was capable of beating the Miners. South Knox played out the way it should have earlier in the year. The Miners shot better and put the Spartans away with some great defense, which hasn't always been their forte this season. The semi final matchup against Eastern would give Lincoln Hale a chance to show the T Birds how big of a difference he makes.... Oddly, it was their defense that was the deciding factor. For 2nd game in a row... Braden Walters made an Evan Slover level of effort on the defensive end. Not too many guys can dictate the direction of a game without the ball in their hands. North Knox on Saturday night was a trap game. The Warriors have steadily improved and play physical defense. If they could patiently move the ball and hit shots, they had a good chance to win. That is exactly what they did for the first 20 minutes of the game. If not for some big shots by Hale and some great defensive/hustle plays by Drew Smith, Josh Pyne, and Walters... the Miners could have been down double digits. The Miners did not match the physicality of the Warriors early on... then Pyne got a little worked up. Walters, Pyne, and Smith seemed to be the 1st to step up. Walters was a game changer on defense, while Hale started to attack the basket. I know there was talk about the number of fouls called in the 2nd half, but watching the game... it was pretty simple. The Warriors didn't take the ball to the basket in the 2nd half, while the Miners/Hale went to the basket. In defense of the Warriors, they were struggling against the Miner 1-3-1 defense and hitting lots of 3 pointers. Congratulations to the Miners as they will travel to Huntingburg to face of against Southwestern Hanover.

Renssealer has had a Freshman team for all my years as well, however it has turned into more of the "C" team format. New Quarter RULE aboslutely KILLS the lower level, used to be 5 Sub Varsity quarters, now its only 4... that has been a nightmare for small schools still trying to maximize reps. Our Better Freshman seem to be playing full time JV (if not varsity) and our developing sophomore/1st year players roll down to the C team to fill in. Harder and harder to find full on freshman games, but love trying to get all the reps we can
