What happened to the NLC discussion. This seems to be a theme across many Grid topics. Can't stay on subject. Although entertaining, hardly informative. Why not have a general rant thread where people can just do what they wish...within reason.

Why? It doesn't have anything to do with the fact that the great conference fairy isn't going to disband a conference unless the schools within that conference want to disband it. The IHSAA has no control over conference lineups or whether schools decide to come together and form or disband a conference. The NCC lineup has changed here or there, but it's been around since 1926. What's the urgency to get rid of a conference that's apparently working for its members? To answer your question, football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball all benefit from conference membership because of scheduling. If you're in a conference, those are games you don't have to schedule. That's one of the main reasons, for example, that the MIC was formed in 1996. BD/WC/NC were all independents and having trouble getting games in state. They got Carmel/CG/LN to defect from their conferences and the 'Hautes joined the next year and you have a conference. These are decisions made at the school level...not by some great conference god or goddess. Why is Tech in the NCC? Because the NCC and Tech want to be.

It’s only going to get worse. I’ve been hobbled with a walking boot lately, and I’m undergoing surgery Tuesday that’s going to have me essentially housebound for the foreseeable future. And Netflix and Amazon Prime can only take you so far.

Why would they want to leave? They win every year. Kids are happy, parents are happy. They make long playoff runs. Have been in state finals and won state championships. What is wrong with where they are at? I would always stay if I am East.

One of my top 5 places I’ve worked a high school game in 40 seasons. Great setting. Great people ... and the only time I’ve ever been actually physically afraid on a football field. In their pregame show, the cadet corps marches onto the field. Right after the national anthem, they have this gigantic horse that gallops down the sideline to whip up the crowd. First time I saw it, I wasn’t expecting it. As I was standing on the sideline I looked up and this horse blew past me at speed, about an arm’s length away. If you’ve never been that close to a 1,000 lb. animal running fast, I don’t recommend it ... especially when it comes as a surprise. But it’s a great place, and their coach is among the best I ever worked with. And the setting is incomparable.

I started reading this site in 2000-2001 when I was a 18/19 year old freshmen at Ball State. I'm now a fat, old, weak, and dumb 39 year divorced single dad raising 2 sons on my own. It's not that I don't love the debates and reading the information, my attention has changed. I also don't fire of a response like I did when I was younger. I read things, raise my eyebrows, and move on.

Confirmation bias has largely replaced critical thinking skills. I know a lot of people want to de-emphasize a college education as not justified based on the return on the investment. But of all the things I learned in college, the skill of being able to think critically is the one most responsible for any success I’ve had. The ability, through social media, to find large groups of people who support pretty much any position, no matter how stupid, and to bring withering criticism to bear on any contrasting viewpoint, stifles honest debate. It makes us, collectively, dumber.

A basic fact confirmed by every study ever done by anyone is that legal gun owners commit violent crimes at an absurdly low rate. It’s almost non-existent. That’s with the laws as they are now, and have been in the past. So, what is the issue driving further restrictions to be applied to those legally possessing firearms, if it’s not simply political pandering? The argument seems to be that legally acquired weapons are somehow finding their way to subsequent owners who acquire them in transactions that do not include background checks and other “safeguards” against guns falling into the hands of those who shouldn’t have them. Have there been any studies linking these types of firearms to, for example, mass shooting incidents? That’s the sort of evidence I’d like to see. Otherwise, it seems to me that there’s clearly a gun violence problem in this country, but the proposed new restrictions don’t really address that.

Speaking of college, this was recently part of a Frankfort High School daily newsletter: And this particular company has recently advertised it's looking for experienced plumbers, compensation for them up to $100,000 dollars a year. Sorry, I don't see how your average English or Library Sciences degree from a traditional 4-year college can compete.

I firmly believe that most Indiana High School football fans these days are not interested in the honest debate of issues surrounding their team and/or sport. Instead they flock to other social media outlets where confirmation bias and navel gazing are the norm. It makes them "feel good", and that is all that matters, right?

As an I.T. professional with 30+ years experience I beg to differ.
