Serious question; if roles were reversed and Alabama was staring at a 13-0 season without its starting QB available for the CFP, is the committee leaving them out? Not a chance in hell. Wasn’t all that long ago Ohio State won the whole damn thing with their 3rd string QB. Anyone remember any discussion about leaving Ohio St out? I don’t. This is a pure money grab. Bama draws more eyeballs than Florida St, nothing more nothing less. You won’t convince me FSU would have been in WITH a healthy QB given the way this weekend played out. The committee would have just move their criteria goal posts from “FSU has no QB” to “Alabama played in a better conference”. Brett McMurphy reporting the ACC has entered into any bowl conversations with their partners. Total ACC bowl boycott would be an appropriate response given they’ve basically been labeled a G5 conference by thf committee.

Why is it so hard to accept that private school families are just better than public school people?

The goalposts are constantly changing. First it was conference championships, then strength of schedule, then the “eye test.” Hell, if we are looking at one loss teams (and I know I said above they weren’t one of the best four) what are we now saying about Ohio State? I mean, they have the best loss in the country now right? A 6 point loss on the road to the current #1 team in the country with the ball on the plus side of the 50 and :34 seconds left. It’s all so dumb and will be taken care of next year. Team #12 can argue all they want but they won’t have a leg to stand on. This came down to the fact that the SEC has won 6 of true 9 CFP’s and they didn’t want to leave them out. Plain and simple. Saban’s comments LAST year made them hesitant to screw them again.

Luers can go 4-6 and win State... Before 83... was more like an early attempt at using a SAG type solution to qualify for the tourney that incorporated the SOS factor into the selection process... Using Poll Rank and Geography to determine hm field. Had the ISHAA expanded the tourney then to include half of the field, it might be still in use today... with the yearly sounding of the trumpets to then seed it.... Or, you could just say.. no worries ur All IN ...

Not sure of the inference there, but frankly if a kid just wants to go to school and be done with it, I don't see anything wrong with that. That's his life. Had a lot of friends in school who just wanted to do their required school time and that was it. Never wanted to do a minute more than what was required by the state at or with the school ... everything else was "their" time. Some of them went home and played music in their own bands. Some read. Some worked. Some hung out at their local church or community center. More power to them. Frankly, the reasoning for not being active isn't really anyone's business.

I'll be honest and I know it's the easy way out, but...............If Notre Dame was in Michigan's place, I would have been heavily rooting for Florida State. Now, before someone comes on here and says that I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth, let me just say that there's a difference here in the best four teams and the four that deserve to be here. The committee is making a claim that it's about the best four teams, which is why they bumped Bama over FSU. Can we honestly believe that they think Georgia is the 6th best team? No, we cannot. They put an SEC team in out of utter terror.

Not really. The more I think about this the more I think this whole thing is a joke. The committee simply bumped Alabama because they were terrified of what the aftermath would be if they left out the SEC. Alabama's shot at the playoff should have went out the window with the loss to Texas. All Florida State did was go undefeated in a power five conference.

The only concern that I see in this is that, indirectly, there's a negative connotation that kids with special needs are "dead weight" burdens at their schools. That's likely to bring some type of cause of action activity which, as we've identified numerous times here on GID, is something the IHSAA wants to avoid like the plague. With that said, I have to imagine that, in addition to all of those other stats that the schools and state tracks like race, language, FRL status, ISTEP scores, college placement, etc. there is most likely a participation stat. That is, what percentage of the student body is involved in one or more extracurricular activity tied directly to the school. That percentage could then be used to determine the "activity classification" or "activity enrollment" of a school. This number would/could incorporate special needs kids, but would not directly target/reflect them. In addition, for kids classified with a disability or special needs who were active, e.g., the one-armed kicker that you mentioned, would not automatically/erroneously be omitted from the active count. This would address the potential issue that the IHSAA would wish to avoid, would provide a more accurate count rather than just generally categorizing, and would also allow for several factors to be considered. In addition, it is applied to all schools equally regardless of p/p, public, charter, etc. classification. The main problem is that it would likely be a school-reported figure, so it would be be potentially subject to finagling, but it might be a small enough finagling number/impact that it wouldn't matter. The only other issue, tied to finagling, would be outright reduction in offerings for students with disabilities ... or other groups. In order to keep its activity count low, a school could decide to reduce offerings like unified flag football or unified track and field. Similarly, schools might reduce smaller activities where only single-activity students are involved like chess club to gain advantage in the "activity enrollment" impact. One way to combat this, or actually provide incentive to embrace activities like unified sports, might be to offer a "bonus" reduction for having these programs. Instead of a school's mindset that it would be a hit to the activity enrollment to have these programs, it would not only be beneficial to the students to offer them, but also to the school to have these.

You’ve always pointed out that there are special needs kids who simply aren’t going to participate in varsity level sports via some form of handicap (physical or otherwise….though I can actually recall a quite good one armed kicker for Batesville back in my day), severe learning disability, etc. (I admit questioning whether ELL might be somehow considered disqualifying). I’ve always been in favor of not counting them towards student population as regards IHSAA class designations. Is there some reason it is impractical or illegal to do so? That strikes me as a, frankly, uncontroversial (and sensible) change the IHSAA could institute tomorrow. In a certain sense, it acts as a “negative multiplier” for Publics based on a very precise calculation. I realize it’s not a multiplier or automatic bump that some want but incorporating this into the IHSAA class determination calculation might go a heckuva long way towards making a reasonable adjustment EVERYBODY can get behind. What am I missing here? You’ve pointed this out for years. It seems totally reasonable and sensible (at least, I’ve always thought so) but just why hasn’t it gotten any traction?

great guy That high energy rah rah is great, until, you lose and lose and lose some more, 18-23 year olds choose these days to tune out such gimmicky schtick when things go south, the folks who jumped the gun on the extension probably need to be held accountable as well bc 20 million buyout was horrendous for anyone in B10 not named OSU/MICH/PENN ST imo
