Good stuff. I don't completely dismiss Sagarin, I check it all the time at the high school and college level. I just think some on here look at it as the "be all end all." There are obvious flaws with the system, like Columbia City being a 9pt favorite over Dwenger for example. But I do think it's valuable for the purpose that you just used it for.

We see from video that the players coming off the bench didn't get close enough to participate or influence the play. But in the heat of the moment as the play unfolded, the official who saw them come off (assume the U based on the discussion) may not have been able to ascertain exactly how close they got, because he's also focused on the action in the middle of the field. Or from his perspective they were close enough, and he was hoping to get confirmation from his crew. At that point in their discussion they can only rely on what their eyes told their brain and they can recall. This can sometimes be so much easier when viewing multiple times on video from the comfort of the couch. I believe there were multiple instances where there were ineligible players downfield so it's understandable he got crossed on the play I was talking about.

1. Didn't the announcers let you know that in HS FB any accepted penalty (offensive or defensive) results in an untimed down in that situation? 2. As an official, we don't care about you as a fan being "informed".... If you want that, watch Network/Cable FB. This is HS FB. 3. If you are referring to one that brought back a TD near the end of regulation, that was a foul because the inside receiver was covered up by the wide guy. If he was supposed to be off then they were guilty of an illegal formation because he would have been the 5th in the backfield. The H dropped a flag back toward the LOS and then signaled to the R it was ineligible downfield. There must have been a brief discussion that resulted in the correct call of illegal touching when the R realized the covered receiver downfield was the one who caught the ball. Good job the crew on that play to get the right call. The yardage enforcement is the same, but illegal touching also caries a loss of down which they did.

WHAT??? I think that the best arbiters of rule interpretations are ALWAYS "the announcers"... They have studied those pesky rules ad nauseum I bet.

So disappointing. The NIC and their rules are a huge a detriment to Elkhart and Penn.

I believe the announcers explained this on the tv coverage: it is apparently a new rule this year that when the runner goes out of bounds (but his forward progress is not stopped already), they stop the clock UNTIL the ball is positioned and ready for play, then the start the clock back up (ie. not waiting for the snap of the ball).

To be honest you can watch coaches begging for a flag on any play that doesn't result in a big play or TD on any given Friday night. I would bet @Bobref will see that all the time. I already know @Coach Nowlin is a master at the begging for a flag with those flowing locks he has! Surely he will know I am kidding.

Pure hunch on my part, but I have a feeling Snider rolls Elkhart by double digits. I'll take the coach/program with a history of success over the upstart with a 1st year coach and an offense that has failed to show up against any team with a pulse.

It is my take on it as well. The teams you play have to mean something. Cathedral for decades would go into the 4A tournament with a bad record and come out state champions. If you look at the two best games each team has played, Elkhart went 1-1 and Snider went 0-2...The difference is Carroll and Warren are two of the best teams in 6A...While Concord is really good and Penn is well back to that beatable giant everyone has come to love.

We gathered and talked about it after we had already through the flag. The field goal was blocked on the home sideline where all of the action took place after the recovery. The visiting team made it out no further than the 9 yd marker on the opposite side of the field. We ruled that since the visiting team did not have an influence on the play, that we had an UNS on the visiting teams bench, and with no time left, the game was over due to it being enforced as a dead ball foul. We were still very unsure we had it right, but we remembered I believe what happened in the Ben Davis game a few years ago and followed what we had learned from that. In the end, after many conversations, including a couple of PM's with you :D, we realized we had done the right thing. The only thing I felt we did wrong was I threw the flag as the White hat, but I could only see the visiting team due to me staring right at the kicker. It was very obvious that the opposing team had came on the field and then retreated as well. Regardless, it is still a judgement call that we have the benefit at looking at replay for. We were not the ones on the field for this and did not have the pressure of a win or go home game. I can guarantee these officials have doubted what they called from the get go, even if they had it 100% right. I have not met one official, no matter how good or bad they are, that would purposely screw over a high school football team.

Indeed, Coach B always has his guys ready for the post season, but I'm afraid this year, they will not have the necessary horsepower to compete with the Tigers.

😄 All in good fun. Southridge is solid. I'm interested to see if Fisher can make it through this one with his "unpickable" season still intact. As a team Southridge has 17 INT's for the season. Their QB Justin Leathers is an athlete especially on the ground. They've also got a couple kids with speed that may not show up on your radar depending on what game films your watching. Noah Wright has been battling injuries all year, but when he's in the game he makes a difference quick quick quick. Taking all that into consideration I'm thinking the preps from Eville run away with it (42-18). Memorial -24. Take it to the bank 😉

If there were appeals, I doubt they would win if what the crew ultimately ruled was illegal participation. That's a judgement call. It's no different than appealing a holding call or a pass interference call. If an organization were to allow appeals, they create a bad precedent if they allow appeals of judgement calls. If the crew ruled illegal substitution or unsportsmanlike conduct (two different options also possible in this type of situation), that would be a different situation. As Bob explained, both are non-player fouls and treated as dead ball fouls. Thus they would have not extended the OT period and the game would have been over. If they ruled either of these and then allowed one more down, that would be a mis-application of the rule. I'm not sure what they ruled because I was told the signal the referee gave was illegal forward pass. I assume that was because the referee wasn't sure of the correct signal. It obviously wasn't an illegal forward pass. One possible conversation they had was if the actions of the Danville team was illegal substitution (IS) or illegal participation (IP). Both would involve players coming on the field while the ball was still live. The difference is if the bench players influence or participated in the play while the ball was live. They obviously didn't participate in the play, but if they influenced the play, then IP would be a valid judgement. They would need to rule that in order for Brebeuf to get another play. They had to make that decision based on they observed or remembered from the play. The referee would have no idea since they Danville players were behind him. The line of scrimmage of officials probably wouldn't have a strong opinion since they would be focused on the action around the ball. The umpire and back judge may have got a glimpse of the players coming on, but I'm not sure if they would be able to tell how close they get to the action. I hope that helps those understand what may have happened. Again, I have no idea what they actually ruled, and i have no idea what they discussed. It's definitely an unfortunate ending to an otherwise great game.

I can't figure out Elkharts scheme..would think they would be run heavy with him at rb1..they won ugly against Penn yet they still won..Snider's offense has been pretty vanilla this year compared to Carroll whose playbook is wide open...

I don’t think it’s a good practice to make decisions based upon predictions rather than facts. The population growth has been predicted for over two decades for Lebanon and it just hasn’t happened. Their enrollment in 2006 was 1024. Last year, it was 1033. It peaked at 1049 in 2023 and they had their lowest enrollment from 2006 to now in 2019 when it was 973. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but Lebanon hasn’t grown that much. Maybe they will, but that is a bridge to cross after it has been built. Danville has followed a similar trend. 760 in 2006, 820 now. Lowest was 739 in 2021 and highest was 827 in 2014.

Interesting. I would put Fisher on equal standing with Lindauer at QB, but we don't have anyone as dominant as Branson Combs was on either side of the ball. This is the best group of WRs we ever had though.

Given the numbers situation, it would take something really egregious — and I don’t mean “that’s the worst call I’ve ever seen” egregious — to take someone off the field. The far better response for an error in officiating judgment and/or rules application is education and training.

Lions- sni high just don't have the speed n size they need to deal with a true 6a squad..ala Carroll. Chargers- some of their fans are more annoying than Snider guys yet I roll with coach Dinan n they have the makeup of a regional contender. Royals- the days for sparty making noise at 6a regional may be over..they used to he so excited to go get trampled by big brother Carmel..their fan base has taken a back seat to carroll as far as eyes wide shut outside of Fort wayne.. Minutemen- an ex gf went there n we would joke about the mascot..well the legends won't be laughing after their hype train comes to an end after a rough ending to their year. Saints- when they were put in 4a, most knew they would cause problems during playoff time..wayne will not be shell-shocked this week n hadydock could pull the upset. Knights..cyo..coach k..its october..nuff said..

Throughout the night, the head official seemed to be talking into a mic and hitting buttons to turn it on and off(?). Not sure who he was communicating with or if he thought the crowd or TV audience could hear him, or if there were technical difficulties. (It was kinda frustrating as a fan cuz there were several conferences yet we never really seemed to know what was going on.) 3. Seemed like many (all?) of the refs had ear pieces. Is that something new? Were they communicating amongst themselves?
