The more things change, the more they stay the same. Notre Dame Dominates Academic Rankings May 7, 2025 Notre Dame is once again setting the bar high in the academic sports arena, proving that excellence isn’t just a game-day phenomenon. In the latest Academic Progress Rating (APR) statistics released by the NCAA, Notre Dame led all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools, matching its own record with a staggering 17 perfect scores. This achievement places them ahead of known academic powerhouses like Duke, with 16 perfect scores, and Michigan with 13. Let’s break it down like a winning strategy session. The Irish showcased top-tier academic performance across a wide range of sports. From the baseball diamond to the volleyball court, through the fencing piste and the lacrosse fields, a total of 17 programs scored a perfect 1,000 on the APR scale. This impeccable performance isn’t just a flash-in-the-pan achievement; it marks the tenth time in the 19-year history of the APR’s existence that Notre Dame has hit the jackpot with at least 13 teams scoring perfectly. To put Notre Dame’s consistent excellence into perspective, they’ve not only been at or near the top for raw numbers of perfect scores for 19 consecutive years, but they have also led the FBS five times in recent years, sharing the spotlight only occasionally with other elite institutions like Stanford and Boston College. The APR, designed to give a more immediate reflection of a team’s academic prowess than traditional graduation rates, measures each scholarship student’s ability to stay eligible and remain in school. It’s a little like keeping track of a player’s shooting percentage, but for academics. Every scholarship student-athlete earns a point each term for staying eligible and another for staying in school or graduating. The sport-by-sport breakdown is impressive, with baseball, both men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, fencing, golf, and a slew of others racking up perfect scores. Even the Notre Dame football team, which is no stranger to the national spotlight, turned in a solid performance with a 990 score—an impressive feat especially when you consider the demands of both the sport and the academics. This yearly ritual of counting perfect scores is more than just numbers; it’s a testament to Notre Dame’s commitment to balancing academic and athletic success. Their continued leadership in these rankings is like a dynasty run, proving that they play the long game—not just on the field but in the classroom too. When a school like Notre Dame consistently hits high marks, it’s a playbook for others to follow, adding another layer to the ever-thrilling narrative of college athletics—one that celebrates brains as much as brawn.2 points

Using Sagarin's ratings from 1999 through 2024, I've calculated a Top 100 list and Top 25 lists for each class. But how do you compare between years? The calculations are made assuming that the average team in any given year is equivalent. With that defined, we then look at how much better a team in a given year is than the average predictor rating for that year. I'm curious to hear your feedback. The ratings do not account for any kind of overall "improvement" (Is the average team in 2024 better than the average team in 1999) so earlier years receive no kind of handicap which I may consider introducing... Based on what I've seen, this is very minimal, but it's difficult to quantify. Also, I've updated The Predictor Tool, so you can predict any potential matchup from 1999 to 2024. I want to hear other voices and delve into the data further. I think that 5A and 6A may be overrepresented because there is such a fall of between the top teams and the average teams. Some deeper statistical analysis would factor in that anomaly... I need to do my homework or need input from a resident statistican. Not having 2001-2004 Chatard, Heritage Hills, Danville and Andrean in the 3A top 25 is a head scratcher for me. The question for me is: How much better is the average team in 2024 than 1999? One way to account for this would be to look at the IN HS Track and Field records over the years to see how much better athletics in the state has become.1 point

I'm picking up what you are putting down, but if it did happen, would the PAC still not get any love?1 point

Enrollment classifications are done every two years. Success Factor is a rolling two-year cycle. I'm not sure that can be made any more clear.1 point
-
Ironically, whenever Columbus East has been in 5A and 5A has exceeded 32 teams, Columbus East always gets put in a five-team sectional. Happened in the 2015/2016 cycle and in the 2017/2018 cycle. All four of those years we ended up not getting a bye. We’ll see if that impossible streak continues this fall.1 point
-
And which teams have to now participatge in a "Play-In Game", during what should be the Bye Week, will be based on a random draw...what a joke1 point

Good catch. I missed that when I looked at their tournament history. Looked it over twice so I’m not sure how I missed it. Then again, my wife is never surprised when I can’t find stuff right in front of me in the refrigerator.1 point

I’m guessing the IHSAA wanted to make as few changes as possible since we’re in the middle of the two-year enrollment classification period. In my opinion, we shouldn’t be increasing 5A and 6A above 32 teams until 1A through 4A are all at 64 teams each. However, that would require extra work for the IHSAA. My question is, if Cathedral had gotten the 3 points needed to remain in 6A then would 6A have gone above 32 teams for the first time ever? I assume it would’ve.1 point

Agreed, my guess is since based off of Sagarin point differential and faster paced offense is going to benefit the more recent teams in this than teams in the past. Reasoning for a lot of those late 90's to early 2000's really good teams not making lists.1 point

I thought Carmel bounced around from north to south on occasion. Either way, it feels different now with Wright at the helm.1 point

I was aware. Secina was/is in the same boat in that, while it met the terms of SF and moved up, it remains in 2A by enrollment. Linton is another one as well that moved via SF, but remains by enrollment. LCC and Linton, met in 1A, but have yet to do so in 2A. Just thought it was a curious situation. Last season, Adams Central and Linton, both met in a higher class after SF and so did Scecina and Lutheran. LCC and AC would both be teams that were SF'd playing more than one other team, from their former class, that was also SF'd.1 point

Carmel and Westfield have been in the same sectional since Westfield moved up to 6A in 2017.1 point

It's rare, but something I think they should change is taking away the running clock when a team is no longer winning by 35 pts. Again it is rare, but I have seen times when a team gets down 35 pts, and they start to make a push back into the game but the time continues to run regardless of how close the other team gets. Good teams have had absolutely awful halves where nothing goes right, and they are down. They quickly score two touchdowns in the second half and it's a game again. However, the clock continues to run and makes it nearly impossible to come back from. Again doesn't happen often, but there have been rare cases.1 point

I've been perfectly pleased with the rule. As a broadcaster, it's a nice quick way for the game to end. Generally, by the time the running clock starts, everyone wants to go home, even the players.1 point

They pretty much got dominated by Lafayette Jeff Week 1.. were down like 31-7 at half I believe. Unless they had some major injuries in the offseason, I think we need to settle down on the Avon talk.1 point
