So the IHSAA draw is a week from this Sunday. Whoever comes out of S32 will have the host-site tie breakers in their favor for both Regional and Semi-State. Although the ping pong balls determine the bracket, anyone have any thoughts on what the seeds would be with 2/3 of the regular season over? Using a combo of Sagarin & W/L, right now I would say:

#1 Heritage Hills

#2 Memorial

#3 Mater Dei

#4 Gibson Southern

#5 Southridge

#6 Lincoln

#7 Mt. Vernon

#8  Princeton

It's always fun to run these predictions but fwiw, Massey originally picked both North and Jasper to beat MD so not the strongest track record on strength of prediction, esp recently.

I have not seen HH play this year but based on the tread marks from the Tiger Bus as it rolled over us in the Bowl... I would have to put TIgers at the top, at least to this pt in the season.

I would have to agree with the current Coaches poll for seeds. Obviously debatable for the top 2 spots.

I would only use Sagarin as loose reference for high school teams due to team management anomalies. Memorial goes 35-0 in first quarter against Bosse and basically finishes the rest of the game with JV and Freshmen players.  Wins 42-22 and drops ~8 Sagarin rating points I assume for low margin of victory vs weak opponent.

In my opinion, Memorial has its best team since the 2019 & 2018 seasons, with a better defense than both those years.  The next 3 weeks should show that more.  Considering the current game results, and the history of Memorial having lost only to the eventual state champion every year except 2020 recently in 4A, I give the #1 to Memorial. I think the other teams have to prove they can beat them in 3A with what they have shown so far.  It bolds well for anyone coming out of 32.

Hopefully that game happens.  I think it would be a good one.

I have. HH is very good. Goldsberry is tough and elusive.

Why in the world are you worried about seeding and rankings in a BLIND DRAW format??

Nobody is worried. We all know the ping pong balls set the bracket. Its just a topic to discuss as we approach tournament time.

Sagarin certainly has limitations. It doesn't count out of state opponents and a closed SIAC prohibits the connectivity that is critical. I agree, it's a loose reference. It's why I personally don't have GS ahead of MD.
As for us, I would agree this is our best team since 2018 or 2019. The D reminds me of 2019 in that there are no monsters physically, but they fly around and we've created problems for big OL men.

With the old, tired conversation of the way things should be.

Princeton is not in the sectional as they shouldn't qualify for the playoffs.

Memorial, gets a bye round 1.

HH vs VL or MV

GS vs MV or VL

MD vs SR

Of course in a real playoff system (like Kentucky) this would be even different than what I have here.

He’s talking hypothetically - the way he thinks it should be conducted (he had Princeton out).

No, there will be no bye week for anybody in this sectional.

The other tired "should be" conversation.  Has anyone checked out Sectional 31?  Amazing difference in Sagarin.

Sagarin 1-7: Sectional 32 teams

8-12: Sectional 31 Teams

Bottom 3: Princeton, Edgewood, Owen Valley

If we had a playoff where the Sectionals (or Districts) ranked #1 - 7 played against each other, all 7 games would be won by Sectional 32 Teams.  And Princeton would have a slight edge over the bye. (Just kidding)

Sorry didn't mean to confuse, I was just belaboring the old conversation of the way things should be.  Kicking the dead horse of "making the regular season count for something".

My Round 1 bracket prediction:

HH @ PCHS

MD @ SR

GS @ VL

Mt. V @ EM

I predict the Catholic hating IHSAA will put Memorial and Mater Dei in a round 1 game.

I personally don't mind the all-in format, mainly because I don't think there is another way that I trust.

It doesn't bother me either....I also passionately believe that a qualification system would have ZERO effect on the "meaningfulness" or the quality of play in SW Indiana.  I believe that our conferences do a pretty good job of taking care of that.  If they would just seed 1 and 2 on opposite sides of the bracket...I think that would be good enough.

I wouldn't mind that, but I think its more interesting to have SIAC vs. PAC match-ups.

I agree 100% Titan32.

I don't disagree...but the IHSAA doesn't care about that.

Why whatever do you mean, it is almost like you are implying that there is nothing random about the random draw....

I also don't think it would change the quality of play, I do believe that the regular season would mean more if it somehow applied in some way to the tournament.

Indeed, I think we all look forward to this.  At the same time a GS/HH or a SR/HH matchup will not even be close to the same game it was in the regular season.

Yeah, what do you do with the whole “0 and 8 and onto state” kind of school who plays mostly bigger schools in their conference?  That team could easily be more deserving than a team that whips cupcakes all season long.

I have my gripes about the current system.  But there is no perfect alternative.

Mater Dei.  Wins 2 games in the SIAC and then wins state in 2a.  Yeah, I didn't say my way was perfect, there is some things to take into account.  Probably have to be some conference realignments.  But it is pointless to talk about (yes I know I started it.)

It would have been very interesting to see what would have happened if 2-7 MD had beaten North Posey last year in the Sectional.
