  1. LOL. I meant statue. But ironically the Goebel statute is an amendment to the HS football rules in SW Indiana that allows him (and ONLY him) to be between the numbers and hash for purposes of berating the white hat without penalty.

  2. We weren't perfect with this, but the league took steps to have the refs as a part of the league as opposed to like just gameday work. The refs were part of the league's board. They were part of the season prep and the season debrief. They also provided inputs to the coaches throughout the season. There were some coaches that just wanted to play on Sunday and win, but there were enough other coaches out there that would remind parents, before games, kind of exactly what you said; that they were there to cheer for the team and support their kid and let everyone else, coaches, refs, players, chain gang, concession stand folks, etc. do their jobs. For the most part, coaches did a good job of nipping stuff in the bud really quickly if a fan yelled out. Even got the kids involved in helping out and understanding the refs' role that, whenever there was a timeout or halftime, the kids bringing out the water would ask the refs if they needed some too. It was the only time the kids got to talk to the refs in games except to say "good game" at the end of the game or "heads" or "tails" or "that one" for the endzone to defend at the coin flip, so they thought it was something special.

  3. You want outside the box? I’ll give you some outside the box. Recruit female football officials. More young women than ever are participating in athletics. And the opportunities for rapid advancement are there. We have had a woman officiate in the Super Bowl, and in major bowl games. Go to people who are already softball or basketball officials and recruit them for football. That, in addition to recruiting at the grass roots, e.g., just-graduated senior athletes.

  4. Wogoman and Goshen had a great game plan coming into - Slow down the game. NPs second possession came with 8 minutes left on the clock in the 2nd quarter. Eventually Goshen wore down and just couldn't keep up. Goshen has a VERY nice player in that Elliot kid (without him Goshen would struggle to get a first down). If Goshen shortens the games like they did against the Cougars they will be more competitive than they should be in games

  5. One of the things the Indiana Football Officials Association does to support its members in their never-ending effort to get better is produce and distribute a weekly training video. It has 10 or so video clips of plays from the preceding week’s games that illustrate mechanics issues, rules interpretations, and judgment calls. This video is distributed to the 700 or so members of the IFOA — most of the people you see wearing stripes on Friday nights. These weekly videos are an important part of our in-season training. The IFOA needs your help. On a given Friday night there are 150+ games. They produce a wealth of useful information for officials. The problem is finding those plays in that mountain of video. This is where you come in. If you had an unusual play in a game you saw, let us know about it by describing it on this thread. Let us know the game, the approximate point in the game when the play occurs, and a brief description. We’re interested in almost anything: onside kicks, pass interference, punt returns, goal line plays, big hits … the list goes on an on. Lots of people complain about officiating. Here’s your opportunity to do something about it. These videos help us to be better, more consistent. If you’re reluctant to mention a play openly, feel free to message me.

  7. I think they’ll do it, they know how I’ll deal with it, and I don’t think they want to deal with that either. In fairness I’ve never really had any issues at Seymour. They play at the HS and parents have to be in the stands. I’m more of the mindset you’re starting your AB with an 0-2 count.

  8. The best of luck to you and the HS kids! That's doing God's work there and one day those HS kids will realize what a role they played in helping the next generation enjoy the game. Hope you get all the support you and those kids need from those coaches. I'm encouraged by their "enthusiasm" in handling their fans.

  9. As I watched the Triton / LaVille game Friday night, I saw something I had never seen in a high school game. LaVille attempted a "Fair Catch Kick" as time expired in the second quarter. Triton punted from deep in their own territory and the LaVille returner executed a fair catch at around the 50 yard line with 6 seconds left. LaVille informed the officials they wanted to attempt a free kick and lined up in kickoff formation where the ball was spotted on the field. The Triton defenders were placed 10 yards from the line of scrimmage and the LaVille kicker was given a chance to kick a free kick in an attempt to make a field goal. He was allowed to place the ball on a kickoff tee. The kick fell well short, but I suppose it was worth a try! Triton did have a return man deep, but the ball crossed the goal line, so I assume he was unable to return it by rule. Follow the link for Wikipedia's explanation of a fair catch kick. Interesting play! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_catch_kick

  11. Working on putting a similar system in place here. I asked the local youth league leaders if I could be in charge of dealing with out of line parents and they said NO, we’ll handle that. OK, but rest assured if you don’t I will, you’re asking me to train HS kids, I’m not letting some idiot run them off.

  13. Great play! Hopefully they include this. This is a great example of why I tell coaches and players by rule a FG is generally the same as a punt but it can score 3 points for the kicking team. If this had been downed at the spot of recovery, it would have been your ball at that spot 1st and 10. Most think it would return to the previous spot or the 20, but that's now how the HS rule is written. Just like if you punted it to the R5 and downed it, that's where R will get the ball.

  14. The thing is there is no "coaches box". There is the restricted area and team area, but many coaches feel the restricted area is their area and this is the area where the chain crew operates so I assumed that was the area he was referring to. I could be wrong. Teams get excited over there and often get in the way unintentionally. It's not uncommon though for chain crews to have to move through several coaches and players to get to the next line to gain. Since only players entering the field as a substitute and 3 coaches are supposed to be there, it should be fairly clear. But often it's not. It's not likely something that would get flagged. If the chain crew is trying to get into the team area for some reason, that's on them if it gets tight. I've never seen a chain crew try to move in the team area though.

  15. The white area where the chain crew moves is NOT for coaches. They are allowed by rule to have 3 coaches in that area between plays, but that is NOT the coach's area. It's the official's area to work and the chain crew is part of the officiating crew. Many schools will have an extra 2-yard belt behind that for the coaches and they will put the players behind that. That is not a rule thing though. If coaches are going to come into the restricted area (the 2-yard white area along the sideline. they need do so without getting in the way of the chain crew. During this dead ball period though they would not get a flag for interference unless they blatantly and intentionally did something to the chain crew or other officials.

  18. Appreciate you doing this. Always interesting to read through these as the year goes on. This early it's tough, in my opinion, to judge a whole lot based on a variety of factors that come into play early in the year. Nonetheless, I still enjoy looking through these are I look ahead to who is playing each week.

  19. Brebeuf Jesuit at Marian- BJ coming off a loss to Chatard...Marian squeaked by a below average CMA. BJ wins easily 42-7 Morton at Elkhart- Morton is coming in 1-1 with a win over portage. Morton out gained Hanover Central by 70 yards but couldn't hang onto the football in their 24-14 loss. I like Morton in this one 21-14 Glenn at Angola- Glenn bounces back this week after being held to 74 total yards of offense. Glenn 14- Angola 10 Lowell at New Prairie - New Prairie suffers its 2nd loss of the season this week. Lowell 24 NP 14 Osceola Grace at Jimtown- Jimtown 0-2 and struggling to run the ball in their signature offense. Jimtown looks to get things rolling early. Jimmies 34- Grace 7 Penn at Cathedral- Penn needs to open the playbook a bit if they plan on keeping this one close. Cathedral 42- Penn 21 Clay at Chicago Christian- Do we really have to predict this game? Will Clay be able to finish the season? CC 40 Clay 7 Riley at Adams- Adams' slid by a sophomore packed Logansport with a freshmen Quarterback this past week. Wildcats jumped on the Falcons early last week and held them to under 80 yards of total offense. Taking Riley in this one by 2 1/2 bakers dozen Washington at St. Joseph- Washington was looking for a similar result as their cross town rivals by letting go of Stammich. The program has had an opposite reaction and the panthers are struggling on both sides of the ball. SJ is looking to go 2-1 after easily beating a FWS team that has won 4 games in five years. SJS 40- Washington 0 South Central at Bremen- Bremen found some life last week against a bad Washington team last week. South Central will struggle to keep this one close. Bremen 34- South Central 7

  20. Ah ok. Thank you for the clarification. I didn’t realize it wasn’t JV vs JV Yeah, sorry. I meant bigger as in more muscular. The kids in the past were bigger in an unathletic looking way.

  22. 8-25-23 Yorktown vs. Muncie Central Play #68 Muncie Central FG Attempt. Yorktown blocks it, and it lands past the line of scrimmage. Players on both teams freeze for a second. Yorktown player picks it up and returns it for a TD. Although we've talked about this rule for years with our kids, this is the first time I've seen it happen in one of our high school games.

  28. Two things: 1: I have been charged with traing a group of high schoolers to officiate youth Football games. Rule 2 is on the agenda for Wednesday night. Rule 2 for those who don’t know is titles “Definitions”. One of the items in Rule 2 worth noting is there is a definition for a “forward” pass and a “backward” pass but there is no definition for a “lateral”. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. 2. If the line to gain after the penalty enforcement is gained it will be 1st down. If the line to gain was not reached after enforcement it will be loss of down. So if the play happened on 3rd down it will now be 4th down. A new series can not start on any down other than 1st.
