Coach Nowlin Posted April 27 Posted April 27 Just an FYI – Rule 15-2.4 Limited Contact Program “…in football no protective equipment such as a helmet, shoulder pads, padding or a girdle may be used…” We have now had several reports of protective gear being used during limited contact period. Protective gear includes, but is not limited to soft shell helmets, girdles, and any type of shpoulder pads. Thank you. 1 Quote

btownqbcoach1 Posted April 27 Posted April 27 I will say... ANYTIME the kids are on a football field, they should be wearing mouthpieces. Some of the wording of these rules needs altered for everyone to understand that. Quote
Coach Nowlin Posted April 27 Author Posted April 27 Now, just waiting for ALL SPORTS to get that limited SUMMER Calendar of what you can and cannot do?? You know 14 years ago .... it's coming.. 🙂 1 minute ago, btownqbcoach1 said: I will say... ANYTIME the kids are on a football field, they should be wearing mouthpieces. You're not supposed to do anything that would create contact so why need for mouth guard for protection when you are supposed to be installing and on air reps....... 1 1 Quote
Coach Nowlin Posted April 27 Author Posted April 27 This email was sent to all football coaches and football school Athletic Directors. The schools in violation have been previously contacted by me. This email is NOT an accusation, nor notice of violation. Perfectly fine. And bonus points for playing in non-airconditioned gyms. 2 Quote
jets Posted April 27 Posted April 27 Mr. Faulkens in his original email said "SEVERAL" reports ...and then his follow up email said they have been in contact with "Schools" with an "s" ...so a couple questions: #1 - Who actually reports these things?? Upset parents? Rival coaches? Admin's with a grudge?? All of the above?? #2 - Of course -we all want to know the violators (but realize we never will) #3 - Isn't this what the Odessa-Permian Panthers (famous Friday Night Lights team) got in trouble for ?? #4 - Is there any REAL actual penalty for violating any of these rules?? Not really... Quote
irishuncle411 Posted April 28 Posted April 28 I'm seen multiple schools post spring practice photos/videos on social media and they're clearly in "protective gear" as Mr. Faulkens defines it. I don't know if any school even had to report another school....An IHSAA employee probably just logged onto Instagram and scrolled for a minute or two. Quote

Not really... Historically, the IHSAA has expected programs to self report. It can be triggered from a variety of sources, but will land in the lap of a school admin to make a report. Violators may appear in the board meeting minutes on the IHSAA site. As far as the last question, repeated violations could result in the suspension of coaches. The most famous case of that was when the Channel 13 helicopter in Indy was heading out to check traffic along 465 and 70 on the east side and the camera caught the WC team in shells practicing….head coach was suspended for 3 games, I believe? 1 Quote
Coach Nowlin Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 My goal is just information sharing and trying to make sure everyone is on same page of how it's supposed to be done. (At my school, we choose to not use it for many great reasons and I support not doing it). Quote
First_Backer_Inside Posted April 28 Posted April 28 The most frustrating sport to see avoid these rules is wrestling. Slap the word club onto anything wrestling and now it can be done all year. I doubt starting a football club would change the rules for us. 1 Quote

Well... it's inevitable. It's just not smart not to wear a mouthpiece. But in the summer, too. We don't practice in the spring. 1 Quote
US31 Posted April 28 Posted April 28 You know how many baseball/softball players wear a girdle/sliding shorts? Its not zero.... Quote
US31 Posted April 28 Posted April 28 Different discussion....but for years I've wished the threshold for summer contact practices was SHOULDER PADS...and not include helmets. This way kids could be in helmets anytime they are doing "football". Summer is preseason for football....we are going to be doing football stuff. When you have 20+ kids running around at full speed accidental collisions can happen....kids can fall and bounce their head off the turf. Helmets would protect their head (isn't that the goal?). You aren't going to get "live" contact without shoulder pads. (I realize there are kids who would....any of those kids are gonna probably be apt to do it without a helmet anyway , unless supervised and coached; and they should probably be playing on your defense 😇) rant off Quote

Nasty However, I guess my comment was moreso, if this time is meant for "ON AIR" then what poor luck if you somehow get a mouth injury in that environment Quote

I was working a flag game once when two defenders were following their receivers on crossing routes. They collided full speed and neither saw it coming. They were able to get up and walk away but were done for the day. I'm guessing one or both ended up with concussions. There are also incidental contact when two players are going for a pass. Contact is definitely much less than tackle football but not enough to not non-existent. 2 Quote
Titan32 Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Do the folks at the IHSAA actually know anything about how football is practiced? Quote
