Trojanmp52
I know they where moved down to 5A because of the number of students in the school, but if take the points they would have earned in 6A the last two years would the SF not keep them in 6A? Or does the SF only work for schools the IHSAA moves up?

Or does the SF only work for schools the IHSAA moves up? A couple of teams ended up with some weird SF treatment this last cycle. It appears that the IHSAA used 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 as the reference time, even though some teams were bumped for the 2020-2021 season based on previous cycles that included the 2019-2020 season. Pioneer, in 2A since 2019 season, had 2 points in 2019-2020 and none in 2020-2021 for a total of 2 points. They moved down to 1A. LCC was bumped to 2A in the 2021 season. They picked up 1 point. They had 4 points that they had gotten in 1A in the 2019 season and 2 points in the 2020 season in 1A. These 6 points bumped LCC to 2A for the 2021 season. LCC received 1 point in 2A while Pioneer had 2 points in 2A, yet LCC was kept up in 2A and Pioneer came down to 1A. Chatard received 4 points in 3A in 2019-2020 and 4 points in 3A in 2020-2021 for a total of 8 points. They were bumped up to 4A in 2021. Despite the IHSAA page saying that they would move up to 4A for 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons, using Rule 2.5 ... which is the same rule cited for LCC staying in 2A, Chatard is back down in 3A again this season. https://www.ihsaa.org/sites/default/files/documents/football_success_totals_2019-20_2020-21.pdf

They beat them like a rented mule. Merrillville has whiffed the last three times on the big stage in the tourney. Outscored 127-59. BTW: I think Cody ran away after I exploited his burner account. I may be wrong, but wasn't Chatard a top 5 team all classes that year per Sagarin? At least top 10? I get that Merrillville's performance wasn't impressive to say the least but I'm not sure that game completely disqualifies them. But to answer the original question, no. They proved they could be the best team outside of the Indy bubble but to get anywhere in 6A you have to beat the teams from the donut. Not to mention that they've been 5A enrollment-wise for a couple years now. We'll see, if they put their money where their mouth is this classification cycle they'll be back up in 6A in 2 years. If a school falls to a lower class due to enrollment, they cannot be kept up in that class based on SF points earned. For another example - if Fort Wayne North (smallest 5A school by enrollment) were to win a Regional championship (2 points) in this next period, but their enrollment slips them into 4A, they will not stay in 5A due to that Regional championship. However, I do believe if they were to attain 6 points in this next period, THAT could keep them in 5A.

Not just that game but a team that wants to be taken seriously as a 6A contender cannot get their doors blown off by a 3A school regardless of how good they are/were. @BTF will get this one… ”Region good.” They are where they belong. Andrean is the toughest team they’ll play all season so the hyperbole will once again be off the charts as they run the table. So I guess Ben Davis doesn't belong in 6A either , because they have also whiffed the last 3 years on the big stage in the tourney 110-29. To answer the OP question , yes in most years the Pirates would be in the upper half of 6A teams .

I think Chatard could've taken out a few 6A contenders that season.

They’ve lost to the team who has currently rattled off 29 in a row and actually have recent state wide accomplishments in their trophy case unlike Merrillville whose best accomplishments are from the Nixon/Ford administrations. 7 minutes ago, scarab527 said: I agree with what you're saying, but if that 3A team is one of the best in the state regardless of class I think that has to be taken into consideration. (And those same four couldn’t find Merrillville even if you gave them a map.) Edited August 22, 2022 by temptation

DumfriesYMCA
I think 5A needs Merrillville. just looking at how this last week went.….there are 31/32 teams in 5A…..11 of them won. That’s pretty bad imo

BTF
Indy's Top 5 has been in a league of their own over the last five years or so. Generally there's a couple of teams that could compete with Indy's 6-10. Last year it was Merrillville and Carroll.

I don't think he was taking a jab at the Giants, just making a point. Comparing Merrillville to Ben Davis isn't fair since the Giants are double the Pirates in enrollment. Give Merrillville 3000+ kids and they probably have multiple championships to their credit. Maybe not nine, but more than likely multiple. Yes , I wasn't jabbing at BD but making a point. Just because teams lose deep into the tourney by wide margins doesn't mean they don't belong in the class . Most often than not , If your deep into the playoffs , your better than the majority of said class .
