  1. There may be a few communities where basketball gets the support, but one thing we learned from this football season; football drives the budgets of many more schools, AND the budget of the IHSAA. The IHSAA could afford to cut off the basketball tournament last season, BUT the football season had to happen, or there would have been a high number of schools in trouble financially. Even though crowds were limited at football games, they still drive the budget. So, while the sentimental game may be basketball, the one that pays the bills is football.

  4. The regular season was still 10 games in 84. There were just 4 playoff games then as well. Our sectional game was against Washington, Regional was against North Central, Semi State was against Martinsville, and we played Hobart for the State Championship.

  7. The Big Game Sunday has many interesting story lines. But I’m always interested in what people are chowing down on, to match the excess that is [usually] the Super Bowl. I’ll be brining, then smoking, about 10# of wings, finishing under the broiler to crisp them up. Two homemade sauces: sweet Thai chili and a raspberry habanero that will get - and keep - your attention. Augmented by a nice, chunky blue cheese dipping sauce.

  8. Football is important in the places where people make it to be. I was born and raised in Ohio. Despite the quality of football in some places, the importance of football always felt paramount. It's almost unfathomable football wouldn't happen. Having spent my latter high school years, and my entire coaching career here in Indiana I can tell you that my opening statement is very much the same. Football is important in the places where people have made an effort to make it so. As a whole I feel it will be hard to uproot basketball's title as king in Indiana...but football in Indiana is on the rise. The quality of our game is increasing. It's a very exciting thing!

  10. Sorry! It actually solves a mystery for me because it didn't seem reasonable that BD would drop Warren for one year and pick them up again. I mean, they've played EVERY year since 1937.

  13. Beech Grove is getting some major updates to their facility. That made that job more attractive, I'm sure. Not meaning disrespect here, but there's not much of a path forward at Southport in 6A, IMO.

  14. I don't know if football has taken over the top spot from basketball, but Indiana has become MORE of a football state...especially since the Colts have been good.

  15. I contend that was more a matter of the timing of the initial pandemic outbreak, and the fear and uncertainty concerning the transmission of the virus that drove the decisions being made at the time.

  17. Depends on what part of the state you are in. Basketball is second fiddle for winter sports in Adams County. That's just how it is.

Mandated Pandemic Hazard Pay for Grocery Store Workers Prompts Store Closures, Lawsuits: https://reason.com/2021/02/04/mandated-pandemic-hazard-pay-for-grocery-store-workers-prompts-store-closures-lawsuits/ "Hero pay" reminds me of this quote from "Hoosiers", the best sports movie ever made: "Heroes come pretty cheap around here … if you can put a ball through an iron hoop, people treat you like a god." We can now add "sling bologna from behind a deli counter" to the list of hero qualities......................
