Agreed. That’s how we ended up with the 5A/6A split to start with. And guess what? Those “new” 5A teams STILL couldn’t win their own tailor-made class. Quality 4A teams came to dominate that class which was ripe for the taking. Maybe certain schools just “do” football better at the moment. Honestly, the success of Center Grove against the mega-schools seems to make all these arguments moot.

This could be one of those rare instances where a kid actually chose a school because he felt it was a good fit for him, as opposed to a training ground for the NFL. Good for him.

I really get tired of the enrollment argument. CG played football for 40 years without a whiff of the state finals. Then we hired Eric Moore who stepped up the entire program. Not the team -- the program. The investment in the CG facilities has been largely/partly forced by the varsity's success. Chicken or the egg, right? But the bottom line is that CG's enrollment is in the bottom half of 6A. We could have whined about it but we instead chose to get better. We joined the MIC when pretty much everybody involved thought we were setting ourselves up to go 0-9 every year. You can't control your enrollment but you can control how hard you work.

Gotcha. I’ll phone over to the Tech/Perry AD’s and tell them to “invest harder.”

Maybe the IHSAA should enact a rule that no teams can play one another when the enrollment disparity is greater than [pick a number]. That way those poor kids from Pioneer (enrollment 233) would not have been subjected to the hazards inherent in playing Chesterton (enrollment 2,063) last year. Oh, wait ...

Agree with the first 3 paragraphs BUT (re: paragraph 4....such as it is) I don’t think plumbers, electricians, etc. are displacing ANYONE as regards salary scale. They were ALWAYS essential and making good money....more so today when there are even fewer of them. Some of the most successful businessmen I have met personally were “tradesmen”. I’ve worked for developers worth probably $100MM or more who had associate degrees. My (much-older) step-brother is/was a draftsmen with a high school degree who owns one of the largest commercial insulation companies in the Midwest. I’d trade him any day of the week for my paltry law degree vs. the homes he owns in multiple states. Add that he is arguably one of the nicest, wisest and most generous human beings I have ever known regardless of family.....who can still kick my butt in one-on-one hoops. Even worse, the guy looks like a film star. We attribute far too much to someone having a college degree versus someone who is simply smart and willing to work.

Investment in high school football is incredibly measurable. From facility investment (weight room, AV capabilities), parent organizations, head coach salary and daily responsibilities, caliber of head coach, size of assistant coaching staff, funding of assistant coaching staff, caliber of assistant coaches, non conference scheduling, youth program organization and development, weight training courses in the daily school schedule All of these are crucial if you are doing all of these things at an elite level, then enrollment is like dumping gas on the fire, but if you are not doing all these things, and doing them well then enrollment is like dumping gas down a drain pipe

9/14 state finalists in 6A history have been Carmel, Warren, or BD. That's roughly 2/3 of the participants are from those 3 schools. Shrinking 6A to 24 teams, or 16 teams doesn't take BD, Carmel, and Warren down. Investing in your programs like BD, Carmel, and Warren does.

I actually posted on this in a different thread. Logically, it would seem like making 1A the smallest 32 schools would make it easier for smaller teams to have more opportunities. If we are looking at a big/small school opportunity for heading to LOS, small schools, those in the bottom 32 of 1A, have actually had more appearances in LOS, and the little guy has also won more. Matter of fact, in the last decade, the big guy has only won state twice and only one of those is against a small school ... assuming you count Pioneer as a small school. You'll see from my post that Pioneer's right on the cusp. I argue that they are closer to small school than large school both in terms of size and location, but if someone classifies them as big school 1A, then big schools have won four times out of ten, and because Linton beat Pioneer, Pioneer's win over North Vermillion would then be the only one classified as a big school beating a smaller 32 school. In essence, the bottom 32 do fairly well than there bigger brothers in picking up blue rings in 1A ... and least in the last decade.

I am still a firm believer in having 6A have 32 and 1A have 32. It would help for those incredibly small 1A teams with football. Now that would be fair. Then 5A can go back to around 64 teams.

This is an interesting discussion. The issue isn't numbers to me, it's success. There is no success factor that can graduate the megas out of a class, so I would advocate some sort of "equality matrix" or something that would move down teams in classes that have enrollment but do not have football success. I'd do that, and I'd seed 6A 1-32. Forget the Sectional/Regional/Semi-State model. None of this will happen though.

Already got the ping pong balls out at that point. Might as well use them for that too and knock down the per use cost.

Am I the only one reading through this thinking "Good gosh - if you can't field a competitive football team with 2,000+ students in your building, maybe you've got other issues other than what class you're playing in? " Just a thought....

So what happens when the same schools dominate 7A? Do you just throw BD, WC, CG, and Carmel in 8A?

If the protection from defamation claims based on user’s comments is removed, you can kiss Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc., goodbye. In fact, you can probably kiss the GID goodbye, too. Imagine some guy coming on the GID and posting a rumor about a coach’s alleged improprieties ... which turns out to be false. The coach then sues that poster for defamation, and the GID for posting it. The GID is not incorporated (to my knowledge), and does not carry insurance. Theoretically, the moderators could be personally exposed. How long do you think the GID will last? Think about apps like Yelp and Trip Advisor. They will go away, too.
