Painter recruits competitors, he finds kids in the sticks that are “Purdue people”. Then he coaches them. Versus recruiting 4-5 stars at Bloomington and the me me me culture.4 points

It was 9-11 male enrollment until class basketball started and the used the same enrollment metric for all schools (and eventually made it 9-12, as some schools - especially in IPS and Gary - have much smaller senior classes, so 9-11 was pushing their enrollments up). 9-11 was seen as useful because those would be the students in the school when the classifications took effect.3 points

Caught this clip from PMS yesterday, OUTSTANDING segment. There is a pattern emerging now, can the NFL brass be able to combat it?? Pat and DButt and Hawk, 3 former NFL players, all making great points, these are 20-22 year olds who have never been told NO by others because they have had former coaches in college who were afraid to combat discipline issues because of either A. How much they were being paid and B. afraid they would just LEAVE and go somewhere else and probably get paid more to do so. Loved the clip of Vrabel on it as well. A good 17 min segment imo. it is of my opinion that some organizations are going to be better equipt to deal with this head on vs others. Example, PIttsburgh benched Rookie starter OL for playoff game because he refused to play with a cast on, so they just said fine, your down......Don't think Steelers of previous years would of made that decision. You think Joey Porter would refuse a cast and not play?2 points

No being quiet with e admitting it. I respect great coaches regardless of who they coach for. That is why I kind of worry that the Vikings seem to have found one of those guys. The Lions sure as hell did………dammit. Imagine last year’s Purdue squad if Ivey stayed….holy cow.2 points

I am an IU fan (tough after last 2 games) and will openly admit....Painter is one of the best in the country. Wish he was in Btown. Purdue has a true gem.2 points

I am a retired high school football coach that has transitioned into blog writing. I truly enjoy the process and want to share some of my blogs with anyone interested in high school football. I have a website that contains most all of my blogs. There is no charge to read any of my blogs as I do this for a hobby and not for profit. I am hoping my latest blog is allowed to stay as I feel it conveys a good message. We had one several years ago. Kid was a RB coming from an FWCS school. He lived with mom and grandparent in FW. Dad......yes dad, lived in New Haven. He spent the 2nd semester of a school year in our building with every intention of playing football, even though he knew he had a code violation (3 games) suspension. The FWCS AD challenged it, and the IHSAA ruled him ineligible. And while a challenge was filed, the FWCS school told him if he comes back, they will lift the suspension, so he went back to that school. It's the first time I have ever been aware of the IHSAA ruling in a case where an actual address change took place, even though he had been a student here the entire 2nd semester of the prior school year.2 points

This is what I was referring to as “Purdue people”. My daughter's coach often referred to “Marian people”, those were kids who got it done in the classroom, good teammates, kids that had a work ethic, kids that were competitors, kids that had game savvy. I have mad respect for what Painter has accomplished at Purdue, and if you remember his playing days, there was little doubt he was going to be a successful coach. Bloomington has bought into the AAU bro culture, does anyone that’s watched this garbage think any of those people give a shit about their teammates or University on the front of their jerseys?1 point

That he does for sure, however, he does and has recruited 5 star and top end talent nation wide. I mean he had Kannon Cathings at Brownsburg, signed, but before report time, Catchins wanted certain assurances about his role, Painter told him again, your opportunity for a role will be what you do here in practice and all that, didn't like that answer, Painter gladly let him out of the LOI and he went to the bag man in BYU where they have a pipeline to the OVERTIME ELITE program that Cathings left for his SR yr of HS. Snagged Trey Kauffman Renn right out of IU back yard, 4 start nation wide recruit. IU signed CJ Gunn, Purdue signed Braden Smith, same class. so yeah I get that . Intereresting he has a test he gives recruits on the process while being recruiting, sort of a personality traits type of thing. He will stop recruiting kids if they fall under a threshold. But to your point, who ranks the rankers? I mean Xavier Booker was supposedly the 2nd ranked kid in the nation at Cathedral, in year 2 at Michigan St, still can't get much going. Purdue pulled out mid way JR year. He was on record years ago stating he will always find 1 shooter every class. DJ Byrd Ryne Cline Carson Edwards ( literally no one cared about him, drafted, but didn't stick, lighting up a very good Euro league) Dakota Mathias Sasha Stephanvic Fletcher Loyer Cj Cox (another Painter Gem, was in Texas recruiting a huge event and watching someone else, but he just kept making plays and shots and his teammates loved him, talked to AAU coach and asked who his major offers were, coach said none, he said, welp, that changes now, I am offering him today ).1 point

Fair question. He did say his daughters live in the Carolinas, so it seems like a solid reason.1 point

Agree...he also recruits players that can actually shoot the basketball as well......1 point

that is why I really really really admire MATT PAINTER, obviously, my Purdue alma mater and background, sure, HOWEVER, I have studied him many times over and I know my IU hoops folks like @Irishman will quietly admit how much they admire how Coach Painter runs the show. He doesn't promise anyone anything, only the opportunity to come in and compete. Purdue is one of only 2 teams in the nation who did not take on a transfer this past year. His quotes from his time on committees dealing with the transfer rules are really good. In summary, "what are we teaching young people". "when it gets hard just leave?" "Adversity hits and you quit?" stuff like that.1 point

Well believe the nail was driven into the coffin around 7:22 last night at SSAH. not really sure how or when it will happen . I’m guessing he will get to finish the season unless more issues happen like towards the end of the game with Ballo and Rice . If I was a betting man I would say sometime next month a press release will be issued that says he will “retire” at the end of the season. said it in a previous post when all those things were going down last year I thought the Woodson era would come to an end in March 2025 .1 point

Its a shame if you think about it. The mission for any college to educate a person to get them ready for the "real world". We all agree that education is not confined to the classroom. While this may be a challenge for the NFL, what about society in general? Think about the countless players that will not transition to the NFL and hit the working world immediately following the college? How about the other college players that will transition briefly to the NFL. and then find themselves on the outside looking in pretty quickly. It is certainly an issue the NFL will have to manage...but sadly, so will others.....1 point

Irsay knows his own stadium may have a fair amount of empty seats next season......my fear is that blackouts may soon be returning to the Indy area. I saw the poster promo....Did not include AR. Poster had JT, Buckner and Nelson. Speaks volumes when a NFL team's starting QB is not used to market the club.1 point

Many years ago, a very high-profile basketball player transferred from New Castle to Anderson. Not sure what happened at Anderson over the summer, but she ended up back at New Castle. *Anderson* challenged the transfer based on it being for athletic reasons (which it clearly was, in both directions) and she had to sit out a year at New Castle even though she had played for NC as a freshman and a sophomore (and would play for them again as a senior). IIRC, Randy Zachary transferred from Anderson Highland to Anderson - and they did move - but Highland was graduating its entire front line, while Anderson was loaded (he and Mr. Basketball Kojak Fuller would've been in the same backcourt). Even though he moved to Anderson, the IHSAA denied the transfer and he ended up playing his senior season at Highland.1 point

I have two examples of bonified address changes to other districts that the sending school and IHSAA sent into limited eligibility, so multiple appeals had to be filed.1 point
-
Not football, but sort of the same thing in this example. I had heard decades ago from someone that would know that it was common in Marion County for high school basketball players to transfer among the Marion County schools by simply using the address of a parent one year, a grandparent one year, then maybe an uncle another year. So some were playing at different schools without either actually physically moving, or just living with the relative for the purpose of transferring.1 point

I heard a brief clip of him talking about the NFL on someone's podcast (possibly RG3). He didn't sound like someone interested in the NFL. Mentioned he only spent 1 year in that world and what he knows is College ball. I'm assuming money will never be an issue at Notre Dame, but you never know when a coach will grow tired of NIL + Portal + Recruiting and decide to embrace the challenge of the NFL.1 point

Pre-2020 there were high hopes of of expanding the SIAC up to 12 teams and have divisions. What Oldtime said about getting some members of the PAC and Big 8 to join the conference. There was also a proposed Championship week too for the outright SIAC Champion followed by #2 vs #2, #3 vs #3, and so on. SIAC also had divisions for football back in the 60s and 70s. I do not know the total membership number back then. Here is a list of the former SIAC members http://www.almanacsports.com/football/conference.php?conf_id=siac1 point

I don't think the conference would entertain a school east of US 231 and north of US 50. I have heard some rumors about the TH's North and South, but I just don't see that happening. When Jasper and VL joined, I think the hope was to quickly add two more of GS, Boonville, Heritage Hills, and Mt Vernon. That never happened. I'm pretty sure the conference was gung-ho on an even number. Either 10 or 12. Not sure if the odd number 9 will be changed.1 point
-
Nope... they couldn't have, IMHO. Personally, I would have given VL a second chance to get into the PAC Big School division. I think they would have been a nice fit. The word I heard around the conference is that the second chance wouldn't come because of all the shenanigans that go on with that school at sporting events regarding sportsmanship.1 point

Trust me…sending schools would often not sign off even with a bonified change in address. There are administrators in this state who are pieces of (insert expletive) with regard to allowing kids to do what’s best for them and their family.1 point

Thank Goodness!!! On this one. I ABSOULETY agree with you. Coach Buzea can see the challenges ahead, and Coach Brevard has a program that is coming into its'' own (IMO). This is a good matchup for BOTH schools.1 point

When thoughtfully explained, suddenly President-Elect Trump's benign "Greenland" and "Panama Canal" comments (answering precisely aimed questions) begin to make sense doesn't it...... The US isn't going to "annex Canada", "take Greenland from Denmark by force" or "take over the Panama Canal" but our President needs to be wary of potential threats and this happens to be Trump's way of letting them know we're watching and ready to move when needed...... Why do you think Hamas seems to be suddenly coming to terms with Israel one week before inauguration? Maybe the "Hell to pay" warning is having it's intended result...... https://nypost.com/2025/01/12/opinion/trumps-greenland-push-about-growing-china-threat/ It’s about China, stupid. President-elect Trump’s answer to an ‘I gotcha’ question is capturing all of the headlines – his refusal to rule out military force in the Panama Canal – but many in the media are missing its intended messaging. Trump and his incoming national security team are putting Chinese President Xi Jinping on notice. They are essentially telling him and the rest of the world – we see what Beijing is aiming to economically and militarily achieve in the Western hemisphere. Canada, Greenland, the Panama Canal and even the Drake Passage at the End of the World are all interconnected. China is their common denominator. This isn’t about U.S. military conquests of old. Rather, it is solely about telling Xi “hands off!” It is the 21st century version of the Monroe Doctrine – and it is coming at a time when China is increasingly asserting itself on the global stage. Beijing is working to strangle economically and militarily U.S. maritime and naval sea routes by controlling key choke points and naval transit routes. Trump’s second term was always going to be more China centric. Xi’s rapidly expanding People’s Liberation Army will be a principal driving factor when his administration rewrites the National Security Strategy as mandated by the Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986. As is his custom, Trump is arguing the case against Beijing in largely economic terms. However, the impetus for his argument is primarily driven by China and its dual track approach to building a global military projection force. The key word is “dual.” China’s $1 trillion and growing Belt and Road Initiative is economic in construct. However, it is also an alarming modern-day Trojan Horse that is building the infrastructure that will house an increasingly potent global Chinese military presence. We have seen evidence of this in play. China’s economic investment in Africa led to the opening in 2018 of its first overseas military base in Djibouti and only several miles away from Camp Lemonnier – the U.S. base in the Horn of Africa. Initially this was about Beijing gaining access to raw materials and then securing sea routes back to mainland China by securing deep water seaports, building artificial islands and deploying military forces to secure them. Now it is also about Xi threatening vital Western trade routes in the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. Artful or not, Trump’s warnings about the Panama Canal are timely. China is aspiring to economically control the canal. The Landbridge Group, a Chinese company, alongside “Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings, now operate ports at both ends of the canal.” Greenland may appear to most Americans to be an isolated concern; yet the Danish territory will play an increasingly vital role in U.S. national security in the decades ahead. Global warming is opening up the 3,500-mile Northern Sea Route that extends from the Bering Sea separating Alaska and Siberia to the Barents and Kara Seas north of Murmansk, Russia. Aside from NORAD, the U.S. is presently ill-prepared to defend against any Russian and Chinese militarization of the Arctic. By example, the U.S. Navy only has two icebreakers to cover the competing Northwest Passage in Canada. Currently, the threat is largely Russian. But, in 2018, China declared itself a “Near Arctic State” and launched the “Polar Silk Road” – an Arctic version of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative in partnership with Moscow. Left unspoken for now by Trump, China’s other ambition lies at the tip of South America in Chile. Retired U.S. Army Gen. Laura Richardson, the former commander of SOUTHCOM, warned Congress in March 2023, that Beijing is attempting to “secure the rights to build dual-use maritime installations near the southern port city of Ushuaia.” If that happens, China could militarily dominate the Strait of Magellan, Drake Passage and Antarctica in the not-so-distant future. It would also mean that Beijing could strategically check or to block at will U.S. maritime and naval transiting of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. We only need to consider Taipei and Manila to know that Xi is willing to play that card. The PLA frequently encircles Taiwan by sea and air to practice cutting its sea trade routes and the PLA Navy routinely harasses Filipino shipping. China is challenging us on our own turf. Do we have the determined resolve as a nation to confront them?1 point
