Made adjustments on both ends and dominated the game until that point until the kicker kicked deep when he wasn't supposed to and that flipped the game. Who they played in Week 3 had nothing to do with it. Nothing. It is fascinating to rewatch the videos Coach Ralph made with Coach Anderson breaking that game down quarter by quarter. Coach Ralph's brutal honesty and how he eventually found ways to exploit Snider after 1 and a half quarters. Watching coaches on the sidelines is totally different when you hear Coach Ralph talk about how he is testing early on to see what the other team will give him and he ends up exploiting it. There is a reason Coach Ralph in 11 seasons is 138-14. I really enjoyed his series where he breaks down games and his thought process leading up to and during the games. Best of luck to the Dragons Friday night should be a good game between the Trojans and Dargons. Both coaches have really good Offsensive football minds. Quote

crimsonace1 Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 To pull this from the discussion of SOS and rankings and to the actual game at hand ... These two teams mirror each other. Both spread offenses with a home-run hitter in the passing game, accurate junior QBs and very good, fast defenses. Chatard's Jack Harrington does a nice job of spreading the ball around. They use a lot of play-action and misdirection in the passing game to get guys open, and Julio Graves is a big-time deep threat. He torched Roncalli last week on three deep balls. The running game is solid - Daniel Adams is small, but quick. Daniel Shaw isn't much bigger - both are 5-7 - and didn't play last week. They have similar stats - they've combined for nearly 1,500 yards, splitting the carries and yards almost exactly evenly between them. I like their TEs, who they threw to a lot last week. Chatard's defense is very fast, with excellent LBs. Zach Gantz has 4 INTs this season, and LB Declan Hostettler had a pick-6 against Roncalli last week. You could almost replace names with New Pal. Jacob Davis spreads the ball around well, throws a really good ball both short and deep, and uses all of his receivers. He's also a solid runner. Austin McMahan is a deep threat, with six TDs of 40+ yards this season. NP likes to spread the field both vertically and horizontally with the passing game, and also with the running game, with the threat of the jet sweep with their slots complementing Josh Ranes up the middle. Ranes has 1,841 yards and 23 TDs this season - a big, power back who has excellent speed and is a threat to take it to the house on any play. NP's line is big and good, anchored by Brock Brownfield, who has multiple Power 4 offers. Defensively, NP has been very stout against the run, holding teams to 2.5 yards per carry (in the half of the unfinished game against Decatur Central, the Hawks had 25 yards on 8 carries), led by 2x All-State DL Michael Thacker and a deep linebacking corps. Conner Jacobia has four INTs this year, while Caden Jacobia and Aalijah Lissade both have INTs in each of the last two games. From watching both teams (I've seen every NP snap and have watched Chatard on film), they're very closely matched and mirror each other. Both teams are very disciplined, well-coached, have playmakers on the perimeter, fast, physical lines and defenses and playmakers throughout. Turnovers and special teams will be key. NP has had two long kick returns the last two weeks to set up scores, BC gave up a kick return TD and fumbled a punt return but also forced a turnover on a punt last week. Both are *really* aggressive on the punt block. Chatard has given up some yards in the running game, NP has given some up in the passing game. If NP can establish its running game and control the LOS, it will be successful. If Chatard can dial up some big plays in the air, it will be successful. If either team can win the turnover or special teams battle, that will go a long way in deciding it. I'll have the audio broadcast at NewPalRadio.com. There will be a couple of video webcasts on IHSAAtv.org, too, but mute them and sync up our audio. 4 1 Quote

From what I’ve learned, it sounds like this Chatard team is similar to New Pal last year. Starting A LOT of sophomores, but they definitely feel that inexperience at times. Hoping 13 weeks into season some of those young guys have grown up and are up for the tall task of taking on this New Pal team. If New Pal were to win state this year, do they get bumped up to 5A next year? I’m still not 100% clear on the new rolling success factor. Quote

Chatard has five underclassmen starting on each side of the ball, including some of its biggest playmakers (Harrington, Graves & Adams). NP starts 10 juniors on defense and six juniors, a sophomore and a freshman on offense. NP does bump up if it wins state, since it won a regional last year. Quote

It was a chess match. Obviously Snider's staff did a pretty good job the week leading up to the game in rolling out to a 42-14 lead. Ralph made some adjustments and found his team up 49-42. Snider made adjustments and outscored them 21-12 the rest of the way. It was a tough loss for Ralph and his team. Unfortunately it's the state title team that is remembered. Snider's been there, wanting a do over.............1986, 1997, & 2004. It sucks when you think you have the best team but don't come home with the hardware. Quote
CaptainHook Posted November 15, 2024 Posted November 15, 2024 That Snyder game was one of the best football games I have ever seen. Didn't we uncharacteristically turn the ball over a couple times in the first half that put us in a hole? What a comeback though. Just an awesome game to attend. Yes the 2018 and 2019 teams were very special. If I remember correctly, they beat Center Grove in 2018 and played 16 dudes. Probably the best conditioned team I've ever seen. New Palestine does not have nearly the amount of two way players they have had in the past. However, this is one of the few times a Ralph led team has had a RB play both ways. Ranes and Jacobia both have starting roles on D. Junior class is one of the better classes I have coached in 10 years at the junior high. The "they haven't played anybody" thing is so played out. Didn't make a difference in three state championship teams and a runner up performance in 11 years. Two state championships playing up a level. The Dragons have been banged up. Seem to be getting healthy for the stretch run. I admit, I haven't paid as close attention to HS ball recently, but never dismiss the Dragons. Quote

NP's failure to convert multiple fourth-and-1s turned out to be their downfall, but that was a one-possession game for most of the night. 2021 was a rebuilding year and a surprise sectional title, but they managed to keep Cathedral a two-possession game. They scored 61 freaking points against Snider in 2015. The difference in that game was a blocked PAT and NP had no real answer for Snider's speed on the perimeter. Schedule had *nothing* to do with it. They beat Columbus East, Zionsville and Castle - not exactly chopped liver - to get to Lucas Oil. As far as "can they compete with the Top 10 6A teams," guess what, they don't need to. They're a 4A school, they need to beat the top 4A teams. Chatard will be the best team NP will have faced this season. This should be a very close, well-played game between two very good, well-coached teams. I love ya Aaron, but Tippitt was a yard past the LOS when he threw that ball. Late flag. They actually called ineligible man downfield (which there was not) and not illegal forward pass, but the TD should not have counted. Now the fumble on the other hand, was a blown call. I'm just not sure it would have mattered. We couldn't move the ball on them that night. Quote

As a matter of fact I think in the first Quarter it had been fumbled 3 times but the Dragons recovered one of them and they also threw 1 Int. It was very uncharacteristic of Neligh. I know BTF mentioned when he watched the breakdown of it by Coach Ralph he didn't care for the him against Sniders athletes. I honestly do think that New Pal was stunned early on by the Panthers speed and athletes. I took from Coach Ralph's talking about it that he could tell on film how athletic they were, but he was unsure how his players would react when they saw it up close and personal. Being someone who watches a lot of offensive schemes I thought the breakdowns were great. My favorite parts were when Coach Ralph talked about the timing between Steibling and Hippenhammer, also when he tried some formations and motions to get Snider into their Cover 3 based on tendency so he could utilize a couple of their passing concepts. It is not something new or special that Offensive CoOrdinators do but I enjoyed him breaking it down. I look forward to the game tonight between Chatard and New Palestine it should be a very good game. Also @CaptainHook proud of little Hook he has been fun to watch when I can in college too!
