You are getting perilously close to the point where scholarship athletes become university employees. And the universities don’t want that, for one simple reason: Can you say “union?”

So instead of working harder and mastering your craft, cut bait and run to where hopefully the competition is less?? Never heard Tom Brady tell that story given his experiences at Michigan and the Pats.....As a matter of fact, I don't remember many sporting legends share that view.....

I can only give my anecdotal evidence, but I think this has a lot of validity. I coached for several years in CYO. During my last year a couple of seasons ago, I had 2 7th grade QB's. One had been going full time to a QB coach for a few years at that point. The other had 2 full time QB coaches and then transferred to IMG for 8th grade and is now back in Indy. This situation is probably at the extreme end, but it sounded like a lot of the other CYO kids, whether they be QBs or any other position, are doing strength and conditioning or football specific training at a higher rate than public school players. Again, this is just my anecdotal experience, but it seems like the private school kids are probably doing the outside training at a higher %. If I had to guess why, it was probably due to the cost. You go to a lot of the CYO games on the weekend and you see lots of Escalades and Yukons, it's almost the default vehicle. 2 of my players parents had Bentley's. The training is expensive, and my guess is the private school players tend to have more financial access to it particularly on the Northside CYO schools.

At the end of the day, this is high school football, not college. If I'm a coach, I'm rolling with "next man up." I have too much respect for the kids who put in the hard work from day one within the program. I also would have too much respect for other coaches to actively go after their players. Not gonna lie, I'd do some recruiting at the middle school level. Those kids are free game in my opinion. First_Backer_Inside...........thanks for your insights.

Yea, think is stinks too, but it is a tough world. The kid that waited for his chance, but gets bumped could move on to less competitive school? I betting a lot of could go to smaller school and then bump another kid. Yes it is a vicious cycle, I'll admit, but it is the world we live in.

This isn't a CYO thing....its a "parents with means" thing. Which P/P's and many large suburban publics have in abundance. Which is why a clearinghouse method of counting enrollment would be the best means of "counting" kids and it would not target any particular "type" of school. It would be uniform across all IHSAA member schools.

It would be nice to get some rain before tomorrow night to compact the fill.

As a coach, you never really know what you have until full pads are on, the coaches aren't in the huddles, you have to play a full 48 minute game, and the kids execute or don't execute the game plan put in place. It usually is week 3 or 4 when all the teams in the state are up to full speed with things. Nothing will drive a coordinator crazy like a 7 on 7 or an 11 on 11. No game plan, don't know what the team is going to lineup in and do. Really its just an opportunity for coaches to see who can play and who can't play at the varsity level in my opinion. "Iron sharpens Iron" The kid has two choices. You can complain about the situation you are in all year and waste your last year of playing football you might have, or you can go out and get better everyday competing for that spot to create competition and better play. Its not easy for a young man to keep a level head about and do no doubt. A few buddies of mine and myself were in a similar situation in college. We played at a college in Indy that was pretty good. We were on scout team for a lot of our career. We would get after it with our starting defense everyday trying to get noticed ourselves. The week after a game our defense would tell us we were better than the offense they just faced on Saturday. At the end of the first year, we had one guy transfer to another school. He had great stats for his position at a middle of the road D2 program that went .500 on the year every year he was there. The rest of us stayed and continued playing scout team for a team that won multiple conference championships and never was out of the top 15 in D2. It was hard to do as a college kid and I'm sure it is even harder for high school athletes to have that attitude. But to be apart of something great is worth it to me. Tough situation at Warren and lots of pressure, but pressure does produce diamonds. Maybe this will be the year for them.

No one was ever accused of starting kids “lacking ability.” If you are worth anything as a coach, you’ve developed those lower levels so that when that kids’ time comes, you’ve prepared him.

I made a comment in a different thread about open enrollment hurting some P/P schools and got mocked for it, but it certainly holds true. Pre open-enrollment, you played for your local public school OR you ponied up and played at a private school. There were some instances where families got good at manipulating a friend or families address, but for the most part, the IHSAA sniffed it out. Township and County schools have been taking full advantage of this. There's a reason why a kid can play 3 years at Westfield and end up at Warren Central. There's a reason why Lawrence Township kids flock across county lines to Mt Vernon. There's a reason why IPS athletes have been gutted by the some of the schools you've mentioned.

Somewhat agree here..yes its a travesty that the senior wr that runs a 5.4 40 who waited his whole life doesn't get as many plays as the Jr transfer running a 4.4..some schools have lost blue rings simply due to talent being on the sidelines and in the stands..let your best kids play..don't have the senior sit the whole game though..would he rather start n lose every game or win some hardware while being a team player??

Generally speaking, if you’re not good enough at your job, your company will find someone else who is and replace you with them. Teaching kids that it doesn’t matter how good they are as long as they “wait their turn” is just setting them up for future failures and disappointments. It’s a dog eat dog world boys, get used to it. Better that kids learn it as kids as opposed to as adults.

I guess that's the risk you run when you live on a public course. We had one here sold to the school corp and now part of it is prairie. That doesn't change the fact that Irsay supports many, many causes very generously. Not the least of which is IHSAA football.

Football takes a lot of effort and guts, not many kids have that dedication and drive pursue it.

IHSAA did not grant open enrollment. The Indiana Department of Education granted open enrollment. The IHSAA decides whether transfers are granted eligibility within their rules.

Indy Washington and Arsenal Tech are “metro Indy”. Tech has approximately 2500 students and according to MaxPreps had about 60 kids on the roster last year. Indy Washington had about 650 students and had about 35. Chatard has about the same enrollment as Washington and had over 125… There HAS to be some other factor that I just can’t put my finger on…

So tell me how schools like East Noble and Cathedral are on a level playing field? Kendallville city proper has 10,222 residents (2022) and a small portion of the surrounding area. Damn, Cathedral can pull from anywhere. And honestly, if I lived in Indy and my son had potential to go to the next level, he's not going to ANY of the public schools. He's going to Cathedral, Roncalli, or Chatard. First choice would be Cathedral.

What should their primary concern be? I am anxious to hear Cathedral guys’ opinion.
