Coach Speak

What you're suppose to say: "Both teams had to play in the mud and affected us the same, losing isn't an excuse."

What they mean to say: "Damn, that mud f***** us. We had the better team by far and it slowed us down."

What you're suppose to say: "We play where the ping pong balls tell us to play. We'd have to play them eventually anyway."

What they mean to say: "This is b*** s***. This damn sectional needs to be seeded."

never heard of it

prepare for both, well... the best you can

Wet ball during Team O in practice leading up to that game, I've only experienced snow once (very light) in my 6 years of being a fan, 4 years playing, and 12 years coaching.....

Continuous, short, choppy steps in practice to mimic a slick field.

I watched a game in which an entire team cheered when the snow started flying in the second half. They were going head to head with a team that had a prolific passing attack. I get everything your saying and respect your insight. There are absolutely things you can do to prepare your team for bad conditions, I understand that. It still doesn't take away the fact that bad weather levels the playing field.

Home field advantage on grass?
I will have to dig up the picture of the field for the Memorial / Brownstown regional game in 2016.

A farmer would have been embarrassed with a cow pasture that bad. 😀

(BTW I think the OL/DL decided that game, not the horrible field conditions.)

I have long took the stance that I hate seeing field conditions play a "role/factor" in the outcome of a game. Weather (whether it is raining/snowing/wind etc...)obviously you can't control that - BUT, field conditions can be and the fact that we still allow championship level contest (sectional finals, regional, semi-state) to be played in mud bowls is beyond me...and in my opinion, really a shame.

It is just a game. Played by mostly children/minors.

Teach them that life isn't fair, that you will face obstacles in life you may not have prepared for.

I watched that clip of RCHS/Luers.  I was anticipating foot high grass and quagmire conditions. Maybe the video didn’t do it justice, but I thought it would’ve been much worse.  Appeared just wet.

Love the 2nd paragraph.  Life doesn’t end at HS…….

40 some years ago when artificial turf started making inroads into the college and pro game I bet most people were thinking "This is great for college and the pros, but way to expensive and extravagant for the high school game."  And look where we are today.

It works when the community is wealthy and can afford it.

You kill me Muda....first you complain about tax dollars being used to fund sports related activities and facilities.  Then you make sarcastic comments when a community finds a way to fund programs for youth without tax dollars.  I don't care what side you pick, but pick one will ya??  Good grief.

You have no clue how hard volunteers work because they want to give back to their communities.  They fund raise significantly and we do rely on the generosity of so many people (mainly small business) to help up build and maintain programs.  Not only do we fund football and cheerleading, but also help provide a place for youth lacrosse.  But if you think people just hand us $$ without it being earned, well, you'd be very mistaken.

Some communities are wealthier than others, and as such have more resources.  Just pointing that out.  Sorry if that truth rubs you the wrong way.

I most certainly do.  I have volunteered with a couple of non-sports related community organizations for a couple of decades now, and we work just as hard or harder than the sports-related organizations.

Agree 100%. Field condition was no factor in that outcome. BTC was by far the better team that year.

I think the biggest advantage of playing at home is better tailgate and getting to pick the playlist for the pre-game music.

This is one of the dumbest things I hear.  Sure, life throws curve balls, but you eliminate obvious things all of the time.

Way back when, we played a team first game of the year.  HOT outside and they had the locker room heat on.

The new trend is to not go into the locker room at all during halftime in the hot months. Depends on the facility of course.

We pretty much never go into the locker room at halftime, never have.

Nah, there are many coaches who won't take their kids into some of the older facilities at halftime when it's hot out. They'd tell you point blank if they'd post on here. But they just read.

Where would they get dressed?

We wore our pants with lower pads to the field. We’d only have to put on our upper pads and helmets.  Bathrooms were the only need.

Best I could find from that game. That Wing-T offense was something to see back in 2016.
