Welcome to The Gridiron Digest Indiana Football Report. Each week, we spotlight some of the teams and storylines from Indiana high school football. Titans reloading in Class 3A The Gibson Southern Titans are reloading after winning the Class 3A state championship, starting the season with a 2-0 record, defeating two 5A teams. The Titans beat Terre Haute South 27-20 in Week 1, then defeated New Albany 45-7 last week. They open Pocket Athletic Conference play this Friday at home against Washington. But playing two larger schools in the non-conference schedule - and a strong out-of-state team in Week 4 in South Warren (Ky.) - helps prepare the Titans for conference and tournament play. “I think it is so important to play teams like that. It really forces us to prepare and play at a high level,” Titans coach Nick Hart said. “Then, when we see phenomenal athletes in conference or in the tournament it is something we have seen. We play the defending 5A Kentucky champs next week. Last year they whooped us pretty good, but we learned some valuable lessons that game and I don't think we win a state championship without those lessons.” The Titans graduated a number of players from last year’s squad, including quarterback Brady Allen, who is now at Purdue, but had a strong offseason. “I think it is always a fear that when you reach that mountain top that there can be a hangover going into the offseason,” Hart said. “With everyone that graduated you are looking around for leaders. Our kids did a fantastic job this offseason. I could not have been more pleased with what they did from December-July.” Quarterback Tanner Boyd has taken the reins of the offense and completed 39-of-47 passes for 311 yards and five touchdowns, spreading the ball around to multiple receivers. He was 16-of-18 against New Albany. A dual-threat, he also had a 131-yard rushing game against Terre Haute South in the opener. RB Devan Roberts tallied 169 yards and two scores on 13 carries against New Albany. “He has been great,” the Titans’ coach Hart said of Boyd. “He brings a different dynamic with his legs. We put a lot on our quarterbacks from a decision making standpoint and he has made phenomenal decisions so far. He's a great kid and he has done a great job.” Brownsburg returning to glory It’s been nearly four decades since the Brownsburg Bulldogs sat atop the high school football world with back-to-back state titles in 1984 and 1985. This current crop of Bulldogs is seeking to add to that proud tradition. With Nick Hart's father John at the helm, the Bulldogs enter Hoosier Crossroads Conference play this week after a pair of statement wins in their non-conference schedule, punctuated last week with a 42-35 victory over defending 5A champion Indianapolis Cathedral. Brownsburg moved up to No. 2 in the Class 6A poll with the victory, which came on the heels of a 21-16 win over Ben Davis in the opening week. Last season, the Bulldogs went 9-3 and won their first sectional title since 2009. “Our kids love to compete and winning never gets old, but we try to keep everything in perspective,” Bulldogs coach John Hart said. “We try to stay hungry and humble.” Quarterback Jayden Whitaker completed 15-of-23 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown, winning a shootout with Cathedral’s Danny O’Neil, who threw for 317 yards and four scores. Whitaker and Corey Smith have had a strong connection threw two weeks - Whitaker has 430 yards passing and is completing 63 percent of his throws. Smith has seven catches for 196 yards, including a 142-yard game last week. Junior running back Garrett Sherrell added 129 yards and three scores. “Our success throwing the ball has been the accumulation of a lot of hard work from our players,” Hart said. “Their commitment to working in the spring and summer showed up at the Colts and Hoover 7-on-7 tournaments.” Hart has led Evansville Reitz and Warren Central to state championships. He is the father of Gibson Southern’s Nick Hart. When Gibson Southern won the 3A title last year, the Harts became the third father-son duo to coach teams to IHSAA state titles, joining Bud and Kevin Wright, as well as John and Vince Lidy. All four of Hart’s children are head coaches, as is his son-in-law. “Our kids are tremendous coaches & their success coaching has been incredible,” John Hart said. “We all talk often about football, weight training, and program development, but mostly about life and family. I think we are all each other's biggest fans...led by their mom.” Nick Hart echoed those sentiments. “It is really special,” he said. “When I was old enough, I was always at practice. It is a part of who I am. We talk a lot. It is super-busy this time of year but there are always conversations going on.” Mater Dei takes big step with win The Evansville Mater Dei Wildcats have taken a step each of the last three years - sectional champ in 2019, regional in 2020 and semistate champ in 2021. The Wildcats would love nothing more than to climb the last rung this season as they look to make their seventh State Finals appearance since 1994 and seek to win their first title since 2000. They made a significant statement last week, beating then-5A No. 7 Castle 17-14. Mater Dei moved up to No. 1 in the Class 2A polls with the victory. While it is early in the season, last week’s victory was a big one. I “It seems that the MD-Castle game is always so close and such a battle, Friday night was no different. We have the greatest respect for Coach Doug Hurt and his staff and program – actually, the two programs have very similar philosophies,” Mater Dei coach Mike Goebel said. “The outcome could have been different, the lead changed hands four times and we were able to capitalize on a fumble late after our go-ahead score. Either team could have won.” The victory was Goebel’s 250th career win in a 26-year head coaching career - all at Mater Dei. Quarterback Mason Wunderlich threw for 224 yards, including a three-yard TD to Luke McDermon in the final two minutes to put the Wildcats over the top. They then forced two turnovers to seal the game - recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. When the Knights got the ball back, Mater Dei’s Joey Pierre picked off a pass to seal the game. Wunderlich has thrown for more than 459 yards through two games after passing for 2,671 yards a year ago. Pierre has been the leading rusher in both games as well as playing solid defense. “We think we have a good blend of players,” Goebel said. Several seniors have played in many games and they lead the way. Mason Wunderlich is much-improved. Joey Pierre is an outstanding two-way player and our leading scorer. We have great competition among our receivers to actually get on the field--they are all trustworthy. The line on both sides of the ball has been battling and is improving by the day. As to our main players, we really look at it as the team is trying to find itself and improve, that requires excellent effort from everyone.” With the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference being a 10-team league, every week is a league game, and therefore an important one. “Every game in the SIAC is important,” Goebel said. “Parity seems to be the word this season as only two teams remain undefeated after 2 games. We are now locked in on a very much improved Vincennes Lincoln team this weekend. Coach (Levi) Salters could very easily be undefeated at this point.” Roncalli starting strong Roncalli has started the season strong under new head coach Eric Quintana. The Royals are ranked No. 2 in both Class 4A polls and were ranked No. 1 in the IFCA poll for a week. In Week 1, Luke Hansen broke a 21-year-old school record, rushing for 335 yards and five touchdowns against Southport. He ran for 182 yards on 37 carries in a 17-0 Week 2 victory over Franklin Central. Roncalli’s massive offensive line, led by Iowa commit Trevor Lauck, opens the way. “We focus on ourselves every day. Our emphasis every day is fundamentals and physicality. Our offensive line did a great job at doing their jobs at max effort. Luke did the same,” Quintana said of Hansen’s record-breaking day and start to the season. “He has naturally progressed over the summer and early fall at training his eyes and trusting the guys up front. It helps that he is great in the weight room and an all-state wrestler. We have the tools every week to be a leading rushing team in the state. It's easy to talk, we have to work every day. Very proud of our guys' work ethic so far.” A native of Plymouth, Quintana takes over at Roncalli after 11 seasons as an assistant coach at five different Central Indiana schools. He was on the staff for three state championship teams - with Carmel in 2016 and Indianapolis Bishop Chatard in 2019 and 2020. “The last few months have gone by fast,” Quintana said of taking over as the Royals’ head coach. “I personally like to just get involved and get to work. The first thing was to create relationships with my guys and hire the best staff for our guys. Once that was done, we got straight to work program-wide. The summer went well and the school year is off to a great start. Having a supportive administration and alumni group around is great. All hands on deck to continue and raise the standards of such a great traditional program.” Roncalli faces 3A No. 1 Indianapolis Chatard this week. Lions snap streak, start 2-0 Entering the 2022 season, the Rushville Lions had one varsity player who had experienced a victorious Friday night. That number now extends to the entire team, as the Lions have won back-to-back games to start the season for the first time since 2013. The Lions beat Milan 41-35 in Week 1 to snap a 24-game losing streak. It was their first victory since Sept. 20, 2019, when they beat Connersville in overtime. Rushville followed it up with a 41-39 victory over Shelbyville in the resumption of their longstanding rivalry that had been paused for a decade. For the Lions, the victories were a long time in the making. Isaac Sliger, a 2013 Rushville graduate, returned to the head coaching job at his alma mater last year and worked to build the culture. Last season, they went 0-10, but were playing a number of freshmen and sophomores and building. "When we came in, we understood we wanted to start over completely from scratch and rebuild from the ground up," Sliger said. "For us, that started with creating a culture of living in the weight room, creating high standards, holding players and coaches accountable and creating an environment where our athletes support other athletes and each other in their respective sports. As everyone knows, that is not an easy thing to do every single day, let alone when you are trying to build something from the ground up. Our kids have bought in and have done such an amazing job of doing things the right way." The Lions are led by senior quarterback Austin Vance, a four-year starter who missed all but one game last season with an injury. He threw for 217 yards and four touchdowns against Milan and 122 yards last week against Shelbyville. Junior Harper Miller ran for 169 yards in the win over Shelbyville. Sliger described Miller and Jayden Roosa as their "Thunder and Lightning" combo in the running game in their uptempo offense. Rushville hosts its first Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference foe, Franklin County, this week. "We know and understand we have a lot to prove," Sliger said. "We as a program are in uncharted waters. We are learning how to win games and learning how to raise standards daily, in practice, in film and in the classroom. The EIAC has some great programs that weekly are going to present challenges to each other. Our guys love the challenge." Notable Center Grove extended its winning streak to 30 games last week with a 31-27 win over Carmel behind 180 passing yards from QB Tyler Cherry, 129 of which went to Noah Coy. Carmel’s Jackson Kazmierczak was 22-of-34 for 353 yards and two touchdowns, with Reece Ballin on the receiving end of 156 of those yards. … Evansville Reitz’s Ben Davies was 22-of-30 for 317 yards in a 31-28 victory over Vincennes Lincoln. … East Central’s Cole Burton was 10-of-17 for 291 yards and five touchdowns in a 41-7 win over neighboring Harrison (Ohio). … Guerin Catholic’s Ryan Zimmerman topped the 300-yard mark for the second straight game, as he was 16-of-24 for 313 yards in a 47-10 victory over Lafayette Catholic. … North Harrison’s Sawyer Wetzel ran for 239 yards in a 42-6 win over Scottsburg … Perry Central’s Sawyer Guillaume had 269 rushing yards and three TDs in a 42-21 win over Forest Park. … North Knox’s Caleb Bottum ran for 274 yards and four TDs in a 45-14 victory over Eastern Greene. … Heritage Christian’s Luke Valerio had 185 yards receiving and four TDs on five catches in a 52-33 win over Shenandoah. The Raiders’ Mayson Lewis had 238 rushing yards in a losing effort. … Crawfordsville is 2-0 for the first time in eight years under new head coach Brad Clark. The Athenians had won three games total since 2017 prior to this year. Parochial schools are subsidized by the Parishes in their deanery (district). The last time that I checked, each Parish pays their deanery school around $150,000 per year to subsidize tuition. The Parochial schools in Indy area are Cardinal Ritter (west), Scecina (East), Bishop Chatard (North), and Roncalli (South). There are at least two rates of tuition at each Parochial school - Parish affiliated and non-affiliated. Parents are free to send their children to another deanery school, but they pay higher tuition. The Parochial schools have all singed an agreement to not recruit students outside of their deanery. Cathedral and Brebeuf Jesuit are NOT Parochial schools, they are privately owned by religious orders outside of the archdiocese. For that reason, Cathedral and Brebeuf can seek students from anywhere in the State. I know that Coach Hunt alienated many of the long-time football families and players began to migrate to other schools (mostly Chatard) several years ago. Ritter is struggling to field a team with only 35 players on roster and will likely pay the price for a long time.

I'm new to the site and new to the Columbus area after living near the Indianapolis area. I've enjoyed reading through all the takes on the conference teams in this southern area. Keep up the good conversation! With the East program, I cant imagine how hard it must be for Coach Vogell to follow a legend in Gaddis. Being measured up to that every Friday is tough. I've always felt you want to be the coach that follows the coach after the legend, so the next East coach, when you look at these big time programs. Is there any hope for East to get things turned around and back to a top ten level? Have they just lost coaches/coordinators that were pieces of the puzzle? Vogel sounds like a lifer there at East, so hoping they can get it going.

This is the very reason why most sane people despise the government.

Week 3 Picks Bedford North Lawrence (0-2, 0-0 HHC) at Jeffersonville (0-1, 0-1 HHC): The Red Devils lead the series 30-16 but the Stars have won four of the last five games. BNL has played a couple of tough opponents the first two weeks while all we have to go on with Jeff is last week’s loss to Seymour. There’s really not enough to go off of here and I feel like it could go either way. Because I came into this season expecting Seymour to challenge for an HHC title, I’ll give Jeff the edge here against BNL. It took a late Seymour TD to come from behind and beat them. Therefore, I say Jeff wins. Floyd Central (0-2) at Silver Creek (1-1): Surprisingly, this will only be the second time these two teams have matched up. The Highlanders were blanked at home last year and are now looking to return the favor. I don’t think the Dragons are as good as last year’s team and I think Floyd is much better than last year. Sounds like Floyd Central played Male and Manual tough early on the last couple weeks. Based on that, they should be able to last longer against Silver Creek. I’ll take the Highlanders to win. New Albany (0-2) at Jennings County (1-1): Five HHC teams are winless two weeks in. Two HHC teams are 1-1. It’s crazy to think Jennings County has more wins than five HHC teams (including Columbus East) but here we are. The Bulldogs lead the series 36-10 over the Panthers and have won the last six. Despite how bad Jennings County beat down Brown County last week, and despite how bad New Albany has looked the last two weeks, I have to think talent wins out in this game. The Bulldogs have much more of it. New Albany gets the W. Seymour (1-1, 1-0 HHC) at Columbus East (0-2, 0-0 HHC): 96 straight HHC wins. 107 straight wins against HHC teams. These unfathomable streaks Columbus East had going for them from the 2006 postseason through the 2020 season came to a rotten end last year at the hands of Seymour. If you remember that game, East completely gave it away late and seemed to try their hardest to give Seymour the win. Ironically, the coach to break those East winning streaks was Tyson Moore, a guy who put four years in on the East football team from 2007-2010 to help build those streaks. The Owls also snapped East’s 18 game winning streak against them. However, the Olympians lead the series 35-21. I’m curious to see how East approaches the game and how they respond to last year’s result. While it’s clear the Olympians are no longer a state title threat, have they fallen so far as to no longer being an HHC title threat? This game will reveal it. After taking some lumps the last two weeks, I’ve got to think East will be ready and and capable. I’m going with East.

What are your thoughts on this game? I have attended both of Roncalli's games. The Royal defense is much farther along and have played well against mixed competition. The Royal offense lost a four year starter at QB, Aidan Leffler, who now plays at Ball State. The new QB has very little experience as he missed all of last season with an injury. The Royals also do not appear to have as much depth as in the past. Chatard lost several leaders from last season but they are always very tough and very disciplined. Roncalli's OL is not quite as big as the last couple of seasons as they lost Grant Ray (6'1 290) to UIndy and Sam Seacrest (6'6 305) to Louisville. They do have good size: Trevor Lauck - 6'7 290 (Iowa) Brady Neu - 6'4 278 (Central Michigan) Luke Skartvedt - 6'5 317 (Northern Illinois) Luke Billerman - 6'2 275 Jackson McNeeley - 6'4 283 Seems like it is always Roncalli's size versus Chatard's fundamentals and quickness.

The 4-6 picks seem ambitious at best, my list is not up for debate, it is what is going to happen.

Northridge had several opportunities to win the game last week but couldn't capitalize, still missing a few key players for the next few weeks as well. Could start the season 1-3, but I think they'll finish strong. I'll post my nlc week 3 predictions here in a few.

I went 7-1 last week on the picks, taking me to 13-3 so far this year. If only I were this good on all my sports predictions! Conference play gets started tonight, and with that a few new Week 3 matchups due to the schedule change in the NLC to rotate opponents every two seasons. There are two traditional Week 3 rivalries (Warsaw/Plymouth and Concord/NorthWood) and then two matchups that used to be in the final week of the season (Wawasee/Goshen and Northridge/Mishawaka). Here we go with my predictions (weekly rankings based on AP poll) 5A #16 Concord (1-1) at 4A #7 NorthWood (2-0): The Panthers came away with an impressive victory last week against East Noble after pulling away in the second half. The Minutemen bounced back to even their win/loss record shutting out backyard rival Jimtown. Fun fact - this series is tied 18-18 over the last 35 years. Always tends to be a good one! Both have a common opponent in the Jimmies, and NorthWood looked more dominant in their victory. The Panthers were my pick to win the NLC this year, and they'll start the conference season 1-0... NORTHWOOD BY 16 Goshen (0-2) at Wawasee (0-2): Both teams coming off disappointing losses, but the Redhawks by far had the tougher opponent. Goshen hung in with New Prairie a lot longer than most would have predicted. You can see glimpses of hope with that team. Just need to put together 4 quarters of good football. The Warriors on the other hand... at least they were able to put some points up on the board this week. Any chance for victories this season are tonight and next week. They are at home tonight, but I just think the RedHawks are the better team and get the victory in Coach Wogomon's return to Syracuse... GOSHEN BY 14 4A #16 Northridge (1-1) at 5A #3 Mishawaka (2-0): Both teams had different outcomes against their NIC opponents last week. The Raiders took it on the chin at Elkhart, while the Cavemen continued to impress against SB St Joe. Interesting fact - since Bart Curtis took over at Warsaw, and since Mishawaka joined the NLC - Northridge is 0-fer against "Bart Ball" offense that both teams run, including a regular season finale defeat of 58-14 to the Cavemen. Can the Northridge defense finally figure out a way to stop this style of offense? My thoughts are no... MISHAWAKA BY 21 Plymouth (0-2) at 6A #12 Warsaw (2-0): Truly a tale of two teams and programs going opposite ways. Plymouth has now lost 13 straight games, which seems unheard of for the Rockies. Meanwhile, the Tigers have had two impressive victories to start this season and once again get to play at home in the Lake City. Here is to hoping the Tigers stay healthy after rolling to a victory tonight before a tough upcoming stretch at Concord, at NorthWood, then home vs. Mishawaka... WARSAW BY 35

Eddie Vogel has been at East since 2002. He was an assistant for Gaddis at East every season except Gaddis’ first (2001). David Miller has been at East since 2006. Even before Gaddis retired, everyone expected one of these two guys to become the next head coach. I don’t know if Miller interviewed for the head coaching position and, if so, what his plans were as head coach. All I can say is that Vogel came in with the idea of changing nothing. He wanted to run the program the exact same way as Gaddis because of how successful Gaddis was with it. I can’t speak as to whether Vogel is actually doing it. I can only speak for what I see on Friday nights and what I’ve seen hasn’t been good. The biggest thing is that the talent pool at East has dried up. We all began noticing this in the mid-2010s when the JV and freshmen games were becoming dominated by Columbus North. In 2019 and 2020, we were a 6A school due to the success factor. While we couldn’t get past Center Grove in sectionals, it should be noted that those teams would’ve made semi-state in 5A had we not been moved up. Wouldn’t have made it to state because New Palestine and Cathedral would’ve beaten us, but those were 5A final four-caliber teams. Many of us knew that, after the 2020 season, we no longer would even be 5A final four-caliber team. The talent pool just dropped off that much. Having said all of that, the coaching hasn’t been great. Vogel continues to run the offense Gaddis ran since 2012 when he no longer had a Kiel to sit in the pocket and pick secondaries apart. Problem is, I don’t think there are enough athletes on this offense to continue running it. It has to change but I’m not even sure how. Like I said, the talent pool is pretty low. I need to mention that I love Coach Vogel and Coach Miller. They were great teachers when I was at East and both are great men. However, they kind of seem lost without Gaddis. The personnel mistakes and mismanagement we’ve seen from them the last couple weeks resulting in delays of game, illegal substitutions, and the burning of timeouts because they’re not paying attention has been abysmal. I’m not saying East needs to make a coaching change or a coaching staff change…yet. However, unless any of the other HHC teams start actually becoming legitimate contenders in the state, East should win the HHC every year. That’s not a knock on the other teams. It’s just the reality of where this conference is in football. Nobody in the conference has a better system than East. Nobody is from a bigger football community than East. Nobody has a more successful coaching staff than East. And it’s not like our success was a long time ago. It was recent. That should give us an advantage. I’ll excuse last year because of the circumstances surrounding it. However, I’m not excusing it going forward.

Poor tackling (fundamentals) and bonehead penalties/mistakes (discipline) is absolutely an extension of the head coach. That coupled with some pretty terrible clock management to end both halves cost Purdue dearly. That is absolutely on Brohm.

Last night's game was very Kevin Wilson-esque and reminiscent of his tenure in Bloomington. Brohm is a very good and aggressive player caller and I hate that he coaches at Purdue because he's easy to root for, but he there are times where he just can't get out of his own way.

Not enough players to play this Friday. Calumet Christian has been lined-up since Monday. Other schools were also contacted, but they had the same issue as North Newton. It's sad that schools can't even field football teams anymore. Calumet Christian beat Hammond Noll a couple of weeks ago. They play Bowman Academy in a couple of weeks. Otherwise, they play a lot of non-IHSAA Christian/homeschool schools. They could be better than what NN would have brought, if healthy.

Obviously hindsight, but clock management burned them there but I don't know that I necessarily blame Brohm for being aggressive and trying to win the game. Needs to be more situational awareness from AOC. Purdue had 2nd and very long and then 3rd and 30 on that second to last drive and both times AOC threw the ball down the field into coverage that resulted in incompletions. Have to know that picking up a first down there on those kind of throws are slim to none. Check down or underneath routes are there. Brohm clearly trusted AOC in those situations or he would have called design runs. Purdue was the better team than Penn State last night, and that's a testament to how bad Franklin is at coaching, but you're not going to beat many teams, let alone Penn State when you commit that many bonehead penalties and play so poor fundamental football (missed tackles, blown coverage, etc). That's a game I'm sure Reese Taylor is going to want to forget.

And throw the ball at Joey Porter. Why? Sounds about right.

Late 90’s early 2000’s. It became apparent early on Jackson County would not be able to supply the workforce needs of local industry that Jackson County Development Corp was bringing in. Within about a year of WalMart DC opening up, a manager told me we have approximately 100 new hires starting every week and we have people from 7 different counties. Cummins runs two buses a day from Greenwood and Whiteland bringing people to CIC. Which really sticks in my crawl when you look at the 10’s of millions they receive in grants and abatements, but that’s another conversation. As I understand it a majority of the immigrants we have now are Guatamalan. Early on they were Mexicans, and the Guatemalans and the Mexicans don’t necessarily play well together. I have heard estimates from locals, police, city hall, school officials, my wife, who say that anywhere from 30%-60% are illegal. I frequent several Hispanic establishments, my experience is they are good hard working people just trying to raise a family just like the rest of us. Without getting in the weeds, that’s kind of the situation, hey it always boils down to socioeconomic issues right, and while Seymour is doing well, it doesn’t necessarily translate to W’s on the Gridiron.
