  1. In 2012 the IFCA formed a 14 member committee with myself and Ryan Gallogly {Brebeuf HS} as Co-Chairmans. We put together a 3- part proposal to the IHSAA that included- Part 1- 6th class, Part 2- Success Factor and Part 3- seeding {see below}. I polled all the football playing schools Principals, AD's and Head Coaches in the state on all 3 proposals. Principals- 83% of the principals voted & 85% voted YES, AD's- 86% of the AD's voted & 85% voted YES, Head Coaches- 96%of the head coaches voted & 91% voted YES. We presented are proposal the indiana Athletic Directors committee and they voted 24-0 in favor of are 3 part proposal. Then we presented it to the IHSAA and they approved the 6th class, they approved their version of the success factor {ours was for 4 years not 2} and they did not approve seeding.

  2. This is not the NFL. There is no salary cap or draft to ensure competitive balance. The IHSAA's job is not to ensure "competitive balance," but to administer tournaments and create rules for fair competition. The reality is, in high school sports, some communities/schools are going to have better teams than others. There has never been competitive balance, and never will be, in community/education-based athletics.

  3. You're barking up the wrong tree if you expect him to "work with you". Over many years he has had much more stringent expectations for High School football coaches. Someone whom hasn't coached or dealt with what coaches do on a daily basis ever. Good writer who strikes the needle in viewership and conversation starters, but Head Coaching or coaching skills at all are seriously lacking. The names can be thrown out there O'Shea, Streiff, Dilley, Mallory, Haste, etc. etc. What is largely over looked is the focal point to the equation. He loves to use former P/P coaches to Public or whatever. What is not recognized is the 2 schools associated with the coaches I have named is the 2 schools. Lawrence North and North Central both have their struggles both have high success in Basketball not so much in football. Comparing basketball success and football success is comparing apples to oranges. You only have to have 5 players on the floor in basketball in football you have to have 11 (for a lot of the bigger schools to compete not many 2 way players so actually around 19-22 players). All of the coaches named had some success at one point at those 2 schools for what they are even if it didn't meet DT's criteria. NC and LN haven't exactly been top notch places to coach at when it comes to football, but the coaches named (regardless if their background came from coaching at P/P or Public) have done the best they could with the hands they were dealt. More importantly they have likely had a large impact on the young men they coached at LN and NC during their times there.

  4. Nope....Nothing is better than beating SC 🤣 My favorite moment from that championship game was Joe Montana being interviewed afterward. he holds up the horns sign and says now I know what this mean; we are number one in both polls.....Classic

  5. Improving competitive balance doesn't mean making every program equal, thought that was obvious.

  6. Lol. That doesn't mean what you think it means. It means the IHSAA has the power to decide who plays who and when/where ie the "300 mile rule" which they just amended because you know, they have the power too.

  8. yet somehow the recent coaches that have failed to turn Pike around didn't come from private schools. Jimmy Graves or Pat Echeverria couldn't turn around that program and neither were private school football coaches. Echeverria took a Eastern Hancock team to the state championship, and yet had a 5-25 record during his 3 years at Pike. You want to try and make some correlation between regarding private school coaches and lack of success at schools that historically have subpar football programs, knock yourself out. But my point is that as many, if not more formerly successful public school coaches have experienced the same lack of success at the same or similar programs when trying to turn them around. Don't get overly flustered with someone disagrees with your half-cocked theories based on your lack of comprehension of basic statistical principles. Considering the source, I'll take your immature comment as a compliment.

  9. That changed during the Daniels administration. When the property tax caps were made a part of the Constitution, the school funding formula changed to a money-follows-the-child system (partially funded by an increase in sales taxes). Part of that deal was that schools could not charge tuition for transfers (but the receiving school had discretion to allow or deny transfers). That has since been modified, because some schools were only accepting transfers with good academic or attendance records, and now the state requires a school that accepts transfers to accept everyone who applies, everyone who applies until capacity is reached, or to hold a lottery if there are more applicants than spots. The state provides the enrollment-based financial support. So, if a student transfers from Community A to Community B, the money attached to that student goes to School B, not the school where he resides. Local property taxes pay for buses and capital improvements, but the general fund (salaries, the electric bill, operating costs of running the school) have to come entirely from the money coming from the state, which comes on the per-student basis.

  10. If I remember correctly, In regards to seeding, they felt if they seeded for football they would need to seed all sports and all sports didn't have sagarin ratings. We didn't understand this line of reasoning since all sports also don't have 6 classes. The AD's loved the idea of seeding since there was a chance to make more money at the sectional level which went directly to the schools in each sectional. In regards to the success factor, Bobby Cox liked the 2 year plan over our 4 year plan.

  11. So many people missing the point: speculating about what effect this or that seeding will have on the tournament. The chief benefit of seeding is that it gives more meaning to regular season games. The teams are actually playing for a tangible benefit, which makes the regular season better. That’s why you should not only seed the tournament, but seed all the teams in the sectional, not just the top two.

  12. Arguably the most competitive and difficult class in Indiana outside of 6A. Pound for pound some of the best programs in the state with plenty of talent to go with it. 3A has also produced some of the closest most thrilling games to watch in November with so many close games between top ranked opponents. Preseason top 10 from the digest with their records and Sagarin rankings from last year 1) Bishop Chatard (7-5) 83.50 -Obviously were in 4A last year. But we all know the drill. Chatard is king of 3A and it’s up to everyone else to prove they are not. 2) West Lafayette (9-1) 79.99 -Perennial Top 3 team for 3A. Always competitive….just not always the best luck when it comes to the tournament draw or who is in their sectional 3) Tri-West (11-3) 71.42 -Always find themselves in the top 10 but it ultimately is going to come down to the sectional. Sectional 29 no longer has Chatard but it does have Webo and Danville who are both ranked. 4) Lawrenceburg (11-2) 77.36 -Another stable fixture of the Top 10 for 3A. I personally have some questions after they graduated a lot of studs, including All-American/Notre Dame commit Ashton Craig. Others more in the know seem to think it doesn’t matter and the tigers are reloading. 5) Mish. Marian (11-4) 75.41 - I’m not familiar with Mish Marian at all. I don’t even know their mascot. What I do know is that they consistently get ranked in the top 5 at some point every year but they stall out in the playoffs. 6) Gibson Southern (14-1) 94.32 -Reigning 3A champions and perennial top 5 team. Have a number of key players returning…but ultimately Brady Allen is now at Purdue and now it’s time for the next group to step up and take this team as far as it can go. 7) Oak Hill (8-3) 46.46 -Arguably the biggest wild card in this ranking. Are they a new school? Looking at their stats from last year….They MAYBE graduated 3 starters. Team was almost exclusively all sophomores and juniors playing. Their RB ran for 1991 yards and 34TDs in 11 games…he is back. Definitely a team to keep an eye on if the stats are true because they will have plenty of returning starters the next 2 seasons 😎 Western Boone (7-5) 65.30 -Pound for pound one of the toughest programs in the state. Need to beat Danville and/or Tri-West to just win their sectional…but it’s a task they are surely up for. 9) Danville (10-2) 71.44 -Always so close always so far. Danville is always a great team. They just have ran into the likes of Tri-West and Chatard the last 3 years. When it’s a battle of top 10 teams in November….you have to be at your very best and mistake free otherwise your season is over. 10) Delta (5-6) 50.44 -Moving down from 4A to 3A, they are in a unique position. It appears like 9 or 10 of the offense and 7/8 of the defensive starters are returning. Young core…but they were 5-6….but also they are likely at the top of 3A in terms of enrollment and having high 3A enrollment + a young core usually results in Ws and a postseason run. Honorable Mention These are just some teams that I personally think are worth mentioning and very well may find themselves inside the top 5 at some point this season Hanover Central (11-2) 61.52 Tipp. Valley (10-1) 62.36 Heritage Hills (9-3) 64.47 Brownstown Central (11-1) 63.45 Mt. Vernon (Posey) (8-2) 65.62 Southridge (5-5) 57.40

  13. Arguably your best post of the year. Nobody has to take their time out to read it. We all win.

  14. Chatard was in 3A in 2017 & 2018. We like to think they won 3A in 2019 because we were in 4A.. Just kidding. I have great respect for BC.

  15. In kind of the the same twist of fate….the same thing happened to Gibson Southern. they are no longer in sectional 32 with Heritage Hills Southridge….and where Memorial would be if they were in 3A. They are now in Sectional 30. Still have 8-2 Mt. Vernon and 10-1 Owen Valley in there…but it’s not the same as facing Heritage Hills in sectionals….or Memorial when they were in 3A. Just like WL knows it’s not the same facing other teams when they have been battling Brebeuf and Chatard in their sectional

  16. WL renounced their Catholic faith and were exorcised out of the Sectional of Death. Got a pretty favorable placement in S25. Will still have to likely meet Mishawaka Marian in regionals or Chatard in semi-state, but I have to imagine they will welcome the odds in S25 than the previous seasons where they had to always have that early exit at the hands of their "Catholic brethren" looming in their minds when the ping pong balls started bouncing.

  18. Then the IHSAA has done the absolute worst job imaginable in creating "fair and competitive balance" because it has never existed in high school sports nor will it ever. The IHSAA doesn't exists nor strive for all 360 something member schools to be on equal footing because it is literally an impossible feat. Show me one single thing the IHSAA has done or implemented that has improved fair and competitive balance? "Establishes standards for competition" doesn't mean what you think it means, as I previously stated. I already told you what it means and how it relates to their mission.

  20. Mayes was a heck of a player at ND. NC has had many really good teams despite not having the postseason accolades due to the fact that often they have faced the toughest competition in the state in the postseason and those other teams have gone on to multiple state championships.

  21. Straight from the horses mouth...Show me where it says anything about promoting fair and competitive balance? I'll hang up and listen. https://www.ihsaa.org/About-IHSAA/Current-Information/Purpose PURPOSE OF THE INDIANA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Organized in 1903, the Indiana High School Athletic Association is a voluntary, not-for-profit organization that is self-supporting without the use of tax monies. Any high school in the state, or any junior high school offering ninth grade, whether public, private, parochial, or institutional, if accredited by the Indiana Department of Education, may become a member of the Association by making a formal application that is authorized by its board of education and by subscribing to the rules and By-Laws of the Association. Membership, once attained, is renewable annually provided requirements are met. The purpose of the IHSAA is to encourage and direct wholesome amateur athletics in the high schools of Indiana. In keeping with this mission, the Association: • Regulates, supervises and administers interschool athletic activities among its member high schools as an integral part of the secondary education program. A tournament series is sanctioned in 22 sports, 10 for girls, 10 for boys and two co-ed (unified flag football and unified track and field). This school year, more than 160,000 students will compete in IHSAA-sanctioned tournaments. • Cooperates with all agencies vitally concerned with the health and educational welfare of secondary school students. • Determines qualifications of individual contestants, coaches and officials. • Provides written communications to facilitate athletic relations among member schools. • Establishes standards for eligibility, competition and sportsmanship while providing protection against exploitation of schools or students. The IHSAA is governed by its legislative body, the Board of Directors. Composed of 19 members who are elected by member school principals from three IHSAA legislative districts, the directors serve staggered three-year terms. The Board of Directors meets annually with the responsibility of establishing the Association’s rules and regulations. The same 19 members of the Board also comprise the IHSAA Executive Committee. The Committee meets monthly and is responsible for organizing and directing state tournaments and meets, interpreting the Association's By-Laws, determining penalties for rules violations, establishing the Association's state office and employing a commissioner and staff to administer the daily functions of the Association.

  22. He's clearly illustrating there are massive roadblocks that HoF caliber coaches can't overcome at North Central. It has nothing to do with transitioning from a private or a public school.

  24. beating my head against the wall now....sigh..... Mark Haste was NOT from a private school. He built a highly successful state championship program at Tri-West. He then went to NC and experienced similar results as Streiff and O'Shea. It is NOT just a private school thing with NC....it has to be deeper with football. Feeder systems, football culture, transfers out, etc. This is a case with highly successful high school coaches going to NC and not having the same type of results as their previous school. (in terms of wins/losses and playoff success) I know we all like simple, but this case is not as simple to single out private school coaches.

  25. He also has a fighting chance now with the new PAC expanding the conference and splitting it into 2 divisions has been the best decision ever made by the PAC imo. for Context…only the Circle City Conference had more team state titles this year with 6.

  26. Thanks, Coach May. That is an overwhelming amount of support from all of the people who should be the most important in the decision making process when it comes to this stuff. How the IHSAA is unable to recognize this is quite unfortunate.

  27. The DNC's plan is becoming clearer: 1. Mr. Biden needs to leave office before the 2022 mid-term elections. Either by death or medical incapacitation. 2. Under the 25th amendment, Ms. Harris would become POTUS. 3. Also under the 25th amendment, Ms. Harris will name Hillary Clinton as her successor for VP. This is where "before the mid-term election" becomes important, because such a nomination needs to be confirmed by a majority vote of both houses of Congress. 4. Ms. Clinton is confirmed and becomes VP before the mid-term elections. 5. Ms. Harris declines to run for POTUS in 2024. 6. Ms. Clinton, now VP, announces her candidacy for POTUS in 2024.

  31. I received a flyer in the mail from CC last week, so they are approaching the Sheridan area for students as well. They even had bus pick up points for all of the surrounding school districts (Sheridan, Carroll, Clinton Prairie, Rossville, Frankfort and Western Boone). Pretty aggressive marketing if they are including transportation services.

  33. Sagarin's ELO CHESS ranking does not take into account margin of victory. You likely use some combo of Sagarin (especially ELO CHESS) and head-to-head/common opponents. It would not be terribly difficult in most sectionals, especially for the top two and bottom two.

  34. Of course it is, just like the Fort Wayne newspapers. Too bad they are all left leaning, it's costing them millions. Don't mix business with politics...........it's a death sentence. I would say so. I like the idea of using the ranking, but some coaches will abuse it when already up 35 points.
