I was out of town in Lancaster, PA when I heard the sad news. Just hoping Donnie Baker continues his GID legacy..."swear to God"4 points

"Res ipsa loquitur" (from my waaaay old law school days)....in the case I pointed out, they (St. Mathews Jr. High), quite literally, had world class NFL talent- yet never won city during that time. Its perhaps the greatest example I've seen personally as to the significance of the TEAM vs. individual talent. Kids can be bigger, stronger and faster whether from Indy, Ft. Wayne or Shipshewana and get their @ss kicked by East Central whose school is essentially a RURAL PO Box just off I-74....yet plays as a team and beats Cincy Moeller and also beats a Roncalli team with arguably the biggest O-line and top running back in the state.3 points

8 tracks huh??? 😄 This one was a "throw in" to meet the limit on my Columbia House order.2 points

IO, I haven’t even chewed tobacco or smoked a cigar in almost 10 years. If I finally tried that hippy stuff this late in life I’d likely be living in a tent in San Fran the next week…..admittedly, some days that seems appealing.2 points

I can relate. We weren’t farmers (everyone else I grew up with was, though) but we were “truckers”. I spent my Saturdays and Sundays working off my debts on top of or underneath of 18 wheelers every weekend. Unlike most kids I dreaded weekends post Friday football and couldn't wait for Mondays. The day I left home for College was the last day I ever stuck my head under a car/truck hood, changed a tire or washed a car. I’ve gladly payed someone else to do it since that day.2 points

I am not a big fan of the manner in which the Rulebook deals with “defenseless” players. It does a great job of defining what is meant by “defenseless,” and gives helpful examples of defenseless players. But, IMO, does not do a very good job of telling us what sort of contact against such a player is legal, and what constitutes unnecessary roughness, and is a foul. The new definitions contained in Rule 2-32-16, however, provide that guidance … but only with regard to defenseless receivers (or interceptors, as the rule applies equally to offense and defense). I sought, and received, an official interpretation of the new rule from Asst. Commissioner Faulkens. Regardless of how awkwardly the new rule goes about it, the official interpretation is as follows: In the case of a defenseless receiver, the only types of forcible contact permitted against such a receiver are: Contact initiated with open hands and arms extended, just like in the blindside block rule. Contact during an attempted “form tackle,” i.e., where the opponent’s contact includes an attempt to “wrap up” the receiver. Contact occurring in the course of a legitimate attempt to make a play on the football. Any forcible contact against a defenseless receiver that does not fit into one of these three categories is a foul, either for unnecessary roughness or targeting (if the contact is above the shoulders). No more ESPN highlight hits on receivers, trying to separate them from the ball. Prediction: In the coming years we will see this type of specific protection extended to all types of defenseless players.1 point

You had me until you mentioned Notre Dame, the most over ranked and over hyped team year in and year out. Top 5-10 recruiting class every year and is a non-factor in the national title picture… Carry on1 point

I remember being a kid, not asking my parents, and getting the 13 Columbia House 8-tracks for a penny. Not the smartest move when I realized I had to buy 8 more and quickly mail in the monthly notice to prevent the 8 track of the month being sent to me. Yep, I had to work that one off for my Dad.....not easy living on a small farm..... But one of those 13, 8-tracks was Steve Miller Band Fly Like and Eagle...dang well worth the trouble......1 point

I prefer the original. Honestly my brother got The Joker for Christmas back in the day and wore it out, I haven’t been able to stand Steve Miller Band since.1 point

It’s what youth sports have turned into. No one is more competitive than I am, I want to win. That being said when I coached we talked a LOT about perspective. Win, lose, or draw, the sun will come up tomorrow. Their people dying in a war in Ukraine, natural disasters all over the world, people losing their lives, their homes, etc., and we get to play a game for fun. Perspective! Oh and rest assured the kid and the parents involved…..ain’t gettin no scholarship!1 point

That was good, I'll give you that. I'm more about the smell of cow manure and flee markets.1 point

I just love the sound of “Shipshewana”, though. With that, as much as I want to see the Steve Miller band at Shipshewana in a few months with my white painter paints and “Book of Dreams” belt buckle circa 1977, I’m struggling to pay over $200 to do do.1 point

Great explanation, thanks. Not sure how big and fast kids are from Shipshewana though.1 point

The NFL is not using them just for show. The above is correct. Training your neck and traps also can reduce concussions and this is documented. Here is just one.https://www.rutgers.edu/news/athletes-should-build-neck-strength-avoid-concussions-rutgers-researchers-recommend#:~:text=dizziness and nausea.-,A neck that is stronger%2C thicker or aligned in a,of Health Professions and the1 point

Ly can certainly speak for himself, but I interpreted his comment as to the quality of competition football players face in the city and metro area, starting when they are pretty young. What doesn't break you, makes you stronger........1 point

I hate to beat a dead horse here, but all of those citations represent retrospective studies analyzing data generated under uncontrolled conditions, i.e., practices and games. And they all make the leap: “We use Guardian caps and we have fewer concussions. Therefore, Guardian caps are effective in reducing concussions.” This is called a post hoc, propter hac logical fallacy. It’s very common. Since the result is all you’re after, it’s not that important to you what the reason is that you’re experiencing fewer concussions. But if you were a science teacher, and one of your students offered such a conclusion, you’d have to flunk him or her. Let me be clear. I’m not saying Guardian caps don’t work. All I’m saying is the only truly scientific evidence shows they are of little to no benefit.1 point
