  2. Yes….it has. Anyone overlooking Roncalli does so very much at their peril.

  3. Like anything, it's not just a single issue. Support from the school has always been lackaing. The school has never made an investment at all in the program. The football program is expected to be 100% self sufficient meaning if they needed equipment, it comes from fundraising or donations. If you want Hudl, fundraising. New jerseys, fundraising. Helmets refurbished, fundraising. The school hasn't really hire any assistant coaches to be in the building but from what I hear, that's getting better. The current AD will do whatever he can to make sure things are done correctly but they wasted a lot of years. I also feel like if you want to have a successful football program, you have to have support from the community, which historically is lacking. You have some great parents that are involved and they are at everything and their child never misses a workout, but for every one of those, you have 8 that are the opposite. The overall mentality of the county seems to be, "How can I get by and do the absolute minimum?" which doesn't turn kids into quality football players. I know an army recruiter that makes his rounds at area high schools has said it's hard to get those kids to sign up for the military because the mentality of hard work just isn't there in the majority and if it is, those are the ones that head off to college. I mentioned assistants earlier, and there has always been a lack of help in the area because the pool of people willing to help are small, or they want to help and work construction and don't get off work until well after practice time. And if you can't find quality assistants for high school, jr. high and youth are a challenge too. Keep in mind, these are generalizations. There are some kids that work super hard and are very talented. Some parents are super supportive and are willing to help out in whatever way they can. Coach Bell deserves a lot of credit. He probably has the hardest coaching job in the state. He and his staff are giving those kids an opportunity to play football when they otherwise wouldn't get to. Hopefully things get better for them soon.

  4. In my opinion, the states are on a very similar tier nationally. I currently have three from each state ranked in my Top 100. A breakdown of the those three, which in my opinion, are the best three teams in each state reveals that neither state appears to have a team that will finish in the top fifty at the end of the season. Indiana has Ben Davis, Center Grove and Brownsburg. I was at Ben Davis Friday night for the IMG game and must say I thought the final score was not indicative of how the game was played. The two pick-six touchdowns were large, especially the David Stone 90-yard return. I had some friends who did not get seated until the second quarter and asked how Ben Davis was down that much as they seemed to control the game at that point. Also saw Center Grove play in Canton and must state that they were simply dominated by St. Edward. However, those two teams, IMG and St. Edwards are top ten teams nationally. Brownsburg is a tough call although the win over Cathedral was a statement. Illinois also has three teams ranked, Chicago Mt. Carmel, East St. Louis, and Wilmette Loyola Academy. Mt. Carmel is their best. East St. Louis is the only one that plays out-of-state competition. But since Mt. Carmel and East St. Louis played earlier this year with Mt. Carmel winning by three, it is safe to assume that they are pretty close in ability. East St. Louis beat a Baltimore St. Frances that is on a suicide mission, but was blown out this past weekend by Atascocita, a Texas team that I have in that's state top fifteen. Loyola Academy beat a Michigan team earlier this season and plays Mt. Carmel at the end of the season, so should get a pretty good feel for them at that time. In a three-game series, it would be tough to call a winner in any of three possible matchups. I have a solution to offer, why don't we get the six teams together next season at LOS to find out.

  5. Just to be a completist from yesterday: Chatard Freshmen 21 Cathedral Freshmen 14 I know PBJ always wants to acknowledge the Freshmen score so I thought I’d note it. I guess Chatard’s kids must have attended more special camps…

  6. Leo doesn't even garner one vote in 4A? Columbia City over New Haven and East Noble? Should we even trust a coaches poll? How is a coach even qualified to come up with a Top 10? Aren't they too ultra focused on their own teams to worry about who's Top 10 and who isn't?

  7. I was thinking you'd have to go back a very long time to find two Fort Wayne teams that were widely accepted as Top 10 regardless of class squaring off with one another. One might argue that Snider and Dwenger 2015 may have both been Top Ten. If I remember correctly, that wasn't one of 6A's stronger years. Outside of that you may have to back to the early 2000's with Snider and Homestead. Late 90's with Snider and Homestead. Late 80's with Snider and North Side. Both Snider and Dwenger have had several Top 10 seasons, but not very often in the same year. Friday night will be a hell of an atmosphere. I'd estimate 6000 fans and two of the best student sections in the state.

  9. WW JV losing to Valley 30-8 when I left. 2 straight games against Valley getting absolutely bullied. Better find a physical side or they may not beat Valley for a long time.

  10. Roncalli’s demise (especially after what Chatard did this weekend) has been greatly exaggerated in my opinion.

  11. Week 5, half way done... Attica @ Fountain Central - Not much to say about this. Ramblers should score a few, but it won't be enough to top the Mustangs. FC 38-12 Riverton Parke @ North Vermillion - Panthers have yet to play an entire game. Injury bug has hit them as well. Falcons were a miracle catch away from beating the boys from Clinton. Donnie, this game will be closer than you think. NV 28-20 Seeger @ Parke Heritage - The Patriots pounded RP in the second half. Expect them to pound the Woolfs all game. Apparently some IFCA coaches think PH is the 11th best team in 1A? Laughable. Seeger 42-8 South Vermillion @ Covington - The boys from Clinton pulled one out Saturday night. The Trojans have fallen back to Earth. The Wildcats might be a little rusty having to actually play on a Friday night this week. Lots of Black and Gold being worn at The Complex. SV 48-7 @Donnie Baker I'll make a donation this week.

  14. Retired coaches have a lot to offer younger staffs. Rod Ballart has been at South Dearborn with his son Rand I think since he’s been there. Tyson Moore brought in Zimmerman and another older guy who’s name escapes me, been at Madison and BNL. He may still teach at BNL. Jeff Richey has worked with QB’s at Seymour (under Kelly), North, and now East. I’ve always maintained sports are about relationships, I filled in for a crew on Friday at South Dearborn, when Coach Ballart saw me he said I thought you retired, I said I did, I only took this game so I could see your old man.

  15. I've watched every level of CC football for last couple years. Numbers is a big part. Last year their 6th/5th grade youth team had to play part of a game 10 on 10 after an injury. I just don't think there is enough support or a lower level foundation. Now I think they've had some kids that if they played at a different school would probably get more fan fair. Keith Brooks, Tanner Arnold, and probably the Bell kids who play now and all decent athletes. But the line play is usually very under developed. The teams aren't good in youth league. I know Paoli just beat em 26-7 and that game was 26-0 end of 1 and Paoli emptied the bench. JR high is struggling as well (WW just beat em 44-0). I can only speak to what I see on field but I think it'll be hard to get kids devoted to the game of football there. Still surprised to this day PLAC didn't let them walk couple years ago when they wanted to go independent

  16. German Catholic genetics mixed with a strong farming & family oriented background. They are predominantly catholic kids that attend public schools. They do not start football until the 7th grade. They believe that youth football teaches bad fundamentals. I don't disagree, but don't fully agree either. I think if you have the right people to be an extension of the high school & middle school in your youth programs, it could succeed. You have to control "daddy ball" (both definitions) and make sure the kids are executing the same fundamentals & plays the HS/MS do properly.

  17. I ran across him at a couple of frosh or JV games a few years back. Said he was helping, his grandson was on the team. Time gets away from me, but I would guess in the last 4-6 years.

  18. This 7 yr stretch may now hold the record for the longest losing streak to WL in Lcc history... previously held by Lcc 70-75?? As for the HC.. all that's left is to determine who gets WL... Western or HH.....

  19. In the last 2 games LC has really gotten pushed around at the line of scrimmage. Our offensive line isn't giving QB Bryson Luter any time to throw and isn't opening any holes for our running backs. Our defensive front 7 isn't getting any pass rush on the QB and keeps getting gashed for long runs out of the backfield. Our special teams has done a poor job of covering kicks and have been constantly allowing long returns. We do have injuries to key players like WR Ahmaad Duff and LB Mateo Russell, but that's not an excuse as the players that are on the field need to do their damn jobs. Turning the season around starts with giving a great effort in practice every day, being a lot more physical at the line of scrimmage, and frankly just wanting to win more than their opponent on gameday.
