Since it will more than likely decide the PAC (BIG side) conference champs I thought I'd throw it up for any interesting discussion.  If nothing else so the Memorial folks can berate us both.

Should be a great atmosphere, it would be sweet if the Jungle was as packed as last November.

History Of The Matchup

Gibson Southern (4-1) @ Heritage Hills (4-1)

Heritage Hills - The Jungle - Lincoln City, IN

Friday, September 27, 2024

7:00 pm CDT Kickoff

This is the 52nd meeting between Heritage Hills and Gibson Southern.

Heritage Hills leads the overall series 34-17 after a 23-20 semi-state victory over the Titans last November.

Our Patriots are averaging 35.8 ppg on offense, while holding opponents to 11.2 ppg. The Titans are averaging 37.4 ppg, while allowing 16.6 ppg.

The Patriots also faced three teams that consolidated into Gibson Southern High School in the 1972 and 1973 seasons. Heritage Hills went 0-2 vs Fort Branch, 1-1 vs Haubstadt and 2-0 vs Owensville. In the first season of Patriot Football, the Patriots went 9-1 and their only loss was to Fort Branch (15-12).

The Titans won the first three meetings in the series by beating Roger Snow’s Patriots in 1974, 1975 and 1976. The Patriots didn’t beat the Titans for the first time until 1977, which was the year Bob Ashworth became the Patriots Head Coach. The 1977 season was Bob Clayton's only season as Offensive Coordinator at Heritage Hills before he stepped into the Head Coach role. The following season Ashworth moved onto Evansville Reitz and Clayton took over the Heritage Hills program.

The Titans have won 13 of the last 20 meetings starting with a win in 2010 that snapped the Patriots streak of 21 straight wins over the Titans. Heritage Hills and Gibson Southern have played 5 overtime games in the series including a 7-0 five overtime affair in 1982.

WE NEED YOU this Friday LOUD & PROUD!

With a big injury to the GS defense it could be an uphill battle. Sounds like they were missing three starters on defense against Southridge but “next man up” must have came up big. According to Coach Wilkerson interview, sounds like they are getting their injured players back.

Fixed it:

This is the 52nd meeting between Heritage Hills and Gibson Southern and the Patriots lead the series 34-17.  The Patriots also faced the three teams that consolidated into Gibson Southern in the 1972 and 1973 seasons and went 0-2 VS. Jack Jewell's Fort Branch Twigs, 1-1 VS. Haubstadt, and 2-0 VS. Owensville.

In the first season of Patriot football, the Patriots went 9-1 and their only loss was a 15-12 defeat by Jewell-coached Fort Branch Twigs. The Jack Jewell lead Titans won the first 3 meetings in the series beating Roger Snow’s Patriots in 1974, 75, and 76, the Patriots didn’t beat them for the first time until 1977, the same year Bob Ashworth became the Patriot's head coach. That same season was also Hall of Famer Bob Clayton's only season as Offensive Coordinator at Heritage Hills the following season Ashworth moved on to Evansville Reitz and Clayton took over the Heritage Hills program.

The Titans have won 13 of the last 20 meetings starting with a Coach Rick Stefanich win in 2010 that snapped the Patriots streak of 21 straight wins over the Titans. Heritage Hills and Gibson Southern have played 5 overtime games in the series including a 7-0 five overtime affair in 1982.   In the Coach Nick Hart and Coach Todd Wilkerson era (both began as Head Coaches of their respective programs in 2012), Nick Hart's Titans lead the series 12-6.

 Fort Branch Twigs

One of the best high school mascot names ever.  I hope it is immortalized/recognized somewhere within the South Gibson Government School Corporation.

I agree Muda. GS is consolidated from 3 schools with incredible mascot names - Owensville Kickapoos, Haubstadt Elites and the Twigs.

They should have went with the Gibson Southern Siennas, or maybe the Highlanders.  That would go well with the "field that Toyota built".

Trust me…they didn’t pay a penny toward anything you see at our football stadium.  Not even a sponsor.

As hard as it ever is to pick against a Nick Hart team, I'm going with the Patriots in this one.

The forecasted bad weather might limit the scoring some.  Both teams are pretty balanced in their passing/rushing attack.  Both QBs carry the ball 9-10 times per game.  However, HH's Goldsberry averages about 10 ypc on his carries, while GS's Foster only averages around 4 ypc.  The reason I think this difference could prove crucial is that, in addition to passing less in the weather, both teams may look to have as few handoffs as possible to limit TOs.  And Jett is simply the more productive runner of the two.

But, as this matchup usually is, I expect it to be a very competitive game between two talented, deep, well-coached, and highly-motivated teams.  With the teams ranked #2 and #3 in the 3A, it should be an even more electric atmosphere than it normally is.

I'll go...

Heritage Hills 21

Gibson Southern 13

That's because you haven't offered to change your mascot to one of their model names.  Duh.

The Fort Branch Community School mascot is the Twigs. I think it is one of their K to 8th grade schools.

They have a fairly healthy property tax bill, along with the folks that work there.  That doesn't hurt.

They were given the farm…no pun intended…on abatements.  There is no reason to put their name on anything, trust me on this.
