So what is this telling competitors in 6A? Ditch the "next man up" approach and go out and get players in order to win state titles? I don't think that's fair to the kids who have been with the program from the beginning. But hey, win first, kids second. Egos are out of control.

No one was ever accused of starting kids “lacking ability.” If you are worth anything as a coach, you’ve developed those lower levels so that when that kids’ time comes, you’ve prepared him.

False equivalency. You’re speaking in hyperbole here. That was never the accusation being made. No one claimed “their ability does not warrant it.” The point being made is that it is much easier to have respect for a program that is built from the ground up via feeder systems, while promoting hard work and dedication. Programs that hit reset annually and build via other means (Colorado comes to mind), are becoming way too common for many people’s taste. And please don’t hit me with the piss poor analogy of “coaches can leave so why can’t players?” ”Waiting your turn” in this instance (though I can’t speak for everyone) means the wide eyed kid that busts his ass from elementary on and watches the high school team in hopes of one day being the the next one given an opportunity to play. When you bring in “one and dones” from surrounding programs it’s pretty demoralizing and you are sending a really important message whether you realize it or not. That kid, let’s assume he is talented, has three choices…transfer, switch positions, continue to be a team first guy and accept a backup role. No pearl clutching here but let’s just call this what it is.

I'm not oblivious to the fact that some kids move because they have to. Or that some kids move because they are in a toxic situation. I'm ok with that. But I have no respect for a coach that actively pilfers another high school coach's players. Most times we don't know the back story. All I'm saying, is that where it exists, shame on that coach.

I guess just start telling 5th graders not to bother. "No son, you're way to feminine. I'm not paying for you to play soccer." Work with the kids you have. My neighborhood vs yours.

Generally speaking, if you’re not good enough at your job, your company will find someone else who is and replace you with them. Teaching kids that it doesn’t matter how good they are as long as they “wait their turn” is just setting them up for future failures and disappointments. It’s a dog eat dog world boys, get used to it. Better that kids learn it as kids as opposed to as adults.

Good grief..they sound loaded..wc had a few mistakes last year that seemed to be routine plays. Imo they can be a 6a contender this year if they get their fundamentals back right..i.e. catching wide open passes..

No disagreement at all....especially with one of the largest schools in the state. I would hope they'd focus much more on their feeder systems and player development as well.

I couldn't imagine giving up a Westfield or Cathedral education to play football at Warren.

Yes, in one of the more egregiously bad IHSAA decisions in the past couple of years.

And as we've seen firsthand here at BD, you can be enrolled at a public school, live in that district, but not be allowed to play at that school by the IHSAA.

It’s just like the football playoffs. We have a number of states that have already done this successfully. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Agree with you Muda. One correction - this isn't a potential large tax windfall, its already happening! I have wondered how this will be regulated. The only comparison I have is alcohol, so maybe there is another solution. For example, drunk driving. How do you handle high driving? Are other states doing this? By the way, this is coming from someone who has never been high in his life - so please understand my ignorance to impairment when high.

False. Chatard gets plenty of players from across the Indy Archdiocese. Two of their quarterbacks are Cmehil boys from St. Michael's (believe their house actually backs up to Ritter). And two of their other stars are also from the west side diocese and St. Michael as well, Dan Adams and Jack Davis. Accusing Cathedral or Brebeuf of pillaging players from all P/P middle schools is just inaccurate. All schools (especially P/P) have to recruit students for their lifeblood. Cathedral is no different than the rest. I still believe any public that builds a program and recruits/spends time on the summer circuit can garner similar results. As soon as the IHSAA granted open enrollment for all publics, the success factor should have been revoked.

With that stated, I am in favor of families finding the best environment for their children. It is a difficult conversation as coaches and programs put so much effort and work into their youth programs to only have kids transfer after their freshman year. With that said, it is our responsibility to build programs that people want to be part of.” Let them transfer, get better or get used to it.

Might as well let the cat out of the bag… Not sure if this changes anyone’s mind, or is common knowledge yet but Westfield’s starting RB from last year (1199 yards) is now at Warren Central…

Those sports already fill out their schedules with teams from those current regions. So, going from a conference of all local teams to a smaller conference that may require driving two-three times that season, is not unfeasible because they are already doing it. The rest of their schedules will likely stay close to the same because the AD's at the other schools may not want to go shop around and try to fill the spot Penn and Elkhart left. The conference can create rules that their conference games are on the weekends to eliminate missed class time and diminished study time. Sadly we cannot jump on the 465 and be on the other side of the city in 20 or so minutes. The luxury of dense population is not in our favor. It won't happen, but if these schools made the decision that they wanted to improve their athletic competitiveness across all sports I think this would be a good step. Penn and Elkhart joining the DAC or an elite conference of Fort Wayne schools helps everyone in the North.

Speaking of colleges, if students that do not participate in athletics can transfer wherever they want, with no restrictions, shouldn't student athletes? Scholarships are renewable on a year by year basis. The athlete isn't bound by anything other than the one year. In regard to high school, I wish the IHSAA would institute a rule that whichever school the student is enrolled with when schools return from Dead Week, that is who you are eligible to play with, the exception being an actual physical move during a school year. That would remove some of the judgment calls the IHSAA has to make every year that seem to be inconsistent. This would also be more consistent with "Open Enrollment" the IDOE has instituted.

This "heart of gold guy' purchased a public golf course in Culver. He told the people living on it that they can't play it and now he and his buddies play the course themselves not allowing anyone else to play. Not a heart of gold!
