I hadn’t seen the video, but was simply going on what the back judge told the referee, i.e., that the receivers touched the ball first. The video, however, shows that they did not. A clean miss by the back judge. Very unfortunate.

R got the ball with clean hands so they can decline the K foul for the facemask to keep the ball. Their block in the back could be enforced and there would be an untimed down. K has the choice of declining that block in the back and the half would end. If R chooses to accept K's foul this would result in a double foul. The penalties would offset, and we would replay 4th down with an untimed down. It's possible R does this to force another punt and a possible return. If they are ready to go to half then they may decline and the half is likely over. I doubt K would accept to give R a free down regardless of where it is.

I think Snider’s defense is really good, I want to see them shutdown a good East Noble team that will throw the ball better than Warren. I want to see a running back pound the ball down the throat of a defense. I want to see a QB show confidence and have a swagger on the field. I want to see a team who doesn’t have 10 penalties at the worst times. I want to see a resounding victory that begins to help me recover from the nightmare that I watched Friday night. If I watched this game on summitcitysports in my home, I would have had a 6 pack to start the game and been hammered by the 4th quarter after gouging my eyes out, but alas, I was at the game with no alcohol. Bad decision

No question that the back judge committed more than one mechanics error on the play.

I'll be curious to see if the Jeff-Avon outcome was indicative of Jeff's potential or Avon not living up to theirs. Jeff's an erratic team in the sense that it sometimes depends who shows up on a given night. They tend to have the ability to win out most times, but it depends on the level of discipline and sometimes play calling combinations in circumstances. They will be the dark horse in 5A as everyone thinks they are still in 6A and are going to be surprised that they won't be facing off against Crown Point for the first game of sectionals and will instead likely get Kokomo, McCutcheon, or South Bend Adams.

While it's not what you would call an "Oh My" score, I would like to congratulate Brown County on their season opening win at Owen Valley, 30-21. Owen Valley had blasted the Eagles the past two seasons, 60-0 and 77-7, and BC had lost by some totally out of control scores in those two seasons despite the mercy rule, like 84-0 to Greencastle last season. They have a first-year coach in Tony Bell who seems to have turned around the attitude surrounding the program. The program had been a real mess for a few seasons.

Muffed punts I will give you, that really hurt Snider in gifting Warren good field position. The running into the punter didn't help Snider's cause either. Talk about unforced errors, Snider shot themselves in the foot in that department. Warren spent half the night in Panther territory for that reason alone. Snider only giving up two touchdowns is a testament as to how good their D really is. You can't solely blame Warren for the five turnovers, Snider's D had something to do with it. I think you'd agree if the shoe was on the other foot.

Bob Lamey probably contributed to more incorrect rules knowledge for Colts fans than any other announcer ever. I loved him as an announcer, but he was so frustrating this his knowledge of the rules and horrible judgement on other calls. I would listen to him while mowing the lawn and think the crew must have a horrible miss on a holding or PI call as he described it. And his descriptions often involved the firing of the official, possibly incarceration and banishment of any immediate family member. Then I would see the call and it was 100% obviously correct. How could someone who has watched football that long be that wrong about the rules or understanding of the rules? But fans always think the announces know the rules so many fans think he's right. But other than that, I loved listening to him doing Colts games.

It happens and I guarantee he is beating himself up over it and will do it right the next time.

Spoke with Mike Marot of the AP last week. They will have a poll this year, but they did not do a preseason poll (again) due to various issues. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Star has instituted its own statewide media poll - the USA Today Network poll. IMO, that will probably overtake the AP poll as the primary "media" poll in the near future.

i used the preseason one to get a basis for how you vote. i didn't want to really post those, will post the week 1 results somewhere around Wednesday evening hopefully if everyone gets their votes in.

Isn’t it kind of funny that we have reversed roles a bit here? No way, no way any fan should leave that game feeling good about the overall performance. Both teams have really good defenses, last I checked, there is a thing called offense that determines whether or not you score points and win the game. East Noble will give Snider trouble, just wait. As far as Warren goes, they are not a serious contender either with how porous that offense looked. To be accurate, Warren had 5 turnovers, Snider 2. Warren ran the ball decently, couldn’t throw worth crap other than the 80 yard touchdown that was thrown 15 yards and ran 65 yards. Snider had decent success in the air minus the 2 interceptions, but couldn’t run the ball for crap. I think both teams will struggle, Snider might go 6-3, Warren 6-3 as well.

These are the next two games we are really excited for. Roncalli is down quite a bit but you always have to give a program like theirs respect. It will be interesting to see how their new coach pivots. Chatard is not the team from last year either. However they still have some dudes. If North can impose their will on both these teams then there will be some heads turning.

Most good crews I know all 5 guys have a watch with a timer. We rarely have to use, but we will if the game clock goes out or we feel the need to keep a backup on the field. Most game clock operators do a good job.

It was a change in 2020 with the COVID changes and it has not been changed. Apparently the state likes it and probably has feedback from the coaches to keep it. If you are still doing the old method with captains, you have been wrong for a few years.

So I worked an 8th grade game last night between two first year MS teams. The coach that won the toss said he wanted to KO, I just said, no, you’re deferring.

After having been a coach in a few games where we kicked off to start both halves (including a Regional playoff game), I am a huge fan of this change. 🙂

The official interpretation is “no.” So, if the cap comes off the runner, the ball remains alive. If it comes off another player, he can continue to participate without penalty. Think of it more like a towel, i.e., a legal accessory. If a player loses a cap, however, he has to come out to re-apply it. Or, he can play without.

It does take a little bit to get them back on with the straps and snaps that need to be run through the facemask. My guess is with my little bit of experience with them, if the cap comes off of a player's helmet, a couple straps probably broke, and the player would need a new cap anyway.

Yes, you are wrong on several counts. You can’t have a back “on the line.” Your problem is that you feel compelled to classify a player as either a back or a lineman, and that is incorrect. If any part of his body is breaking the plane of an imaginary line drawn ­parallel to the line of scrimmage through the waist of the nearest teammate who is legally on the line, he cannot be a back. But if his head or foot is not breaking an imaginary plane drawn parallel to the line of scrimmage through the waist of the snapper when the ball is snapped, he cannot be a lineman, either. That is the issue. He’s neither “fish nor fowl,” and that is illegal under the rule as written. Yet, it happens all the time. Picture a wingback, located just outside the tight end, and in a 3 pt. stance. His helmet breaks the plane through the waist of the tight end, but not the plane through the waist of the snapper. That is an illegal formation at the snap.

I’m referring to the common practice of lining a wingback up so that his position is neither on the line nor in the backfield. There are many implications that flow from lining up in that position … all of which are routinely ignored.
