I’m not a fan of the call on that fourth down play. That being said, you can’t just look at one bad call in a vacuum. Early on in the game the Danville coach got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for going out on the field and confronting the refs on an 4th down play. After that, it seems like the refs were trying to regain control. All night Brebeuf was getting calls against them. Brebeuf is a highly disciplined team on offense. All year they probably had less than 10 holding calls during the season. They had several on Friday. That would be a statistical anamoly. They had a long TD run called back in the third quarter, On the same drive they had another penalty that pushed it to 2nd and 30. Meanwhile a power running team like Danville had maybe one holding call. In the fourth quarter Brebeuf had a 43 yd pass play that got called back for a lineman down field….how often does that get called? The lineman downfield had just about as much of an effect on the play as the kids on danvilles sideline who ran out after the 4th down play in OT. If the refs don’t make that call, then Brebeuf has first down around the Danville 20 and can run several plays and run time off the clock for and Danville probably doesn’t have a chance to score with a minute left and overtime isn’t even a thing. All I’m saying is we fixate on one call at the end of the game when there were plenty of other iffy calls throughout the game that went against Brebeuf and effected how they played the game. There was a reason why they were up 35-14 heading into the fourth. They played a good game as well. They made plenty of mistakes but they had a lot of “bad calls” go against them too, they just weren’t the last one.

Cathedral football is the poster-child for implementation of the Success Factor system. Even with 4A enrollment, they are currently playing in the right class (6A) based upon the strength of Cathedral football year in & year out. Prior to SF implementation, Cathedral won the 4A championship 5 of 7 years (06,08,10,11,12) then moved up & immediately won 5A titles in 13,14. Up in 6A for 2 seasons, they won Sectionals in 15,16 before moving down for 5 years. Initially, they got eliminated by all-time great teams in Col East (17 champion), Dec Cent (18 runner-up), New Pal (19 champion) before cruising to 5A titles in 20 (avg winning margin in tourney--34pts) & 21 (avg winning margin in tourney--30pts). Once again being up in 6A, they won a Regional in 22 & Sectional in 23 before losing to the eventual champs CG & BD. Fun fact: In those 9 state championship seasons in 4A & 5A noted above, 50 of those 53 victories were by double digits. with the average margin of victory by 31.75 points.

This is why, as a broadcaster, I try to keep up with the rules (and if something unusual happens in a game, I ask an officiating friend - you've been a big help a couple of times), because I want to make sure we're *not* giving our listeners bad information. I often find myself explaining on-air the differences between NCAA & NFHS rules (especially when there's DPI when there's 15+ yards to gain and it doesn't yield a first down, or what happens when a missed field goal attempt crosses the goal line and comes out to the 20). Funny thing is, someone approached me at church on Sunday and asked me about *this specific play*, and I was able to tell him - because of this forum - that the offended team has the option to enforce the penalty on the try or kickoff in NFHS rules. I also broadcast hockey and keep a copy of the league rulebook in my bag so I can refer to it in an unusual situation.

New Coach, New Offense, Change in culture..... Just now starting to figure it out. The Team is also very young with only 4 seniors...... 2025 is their year. Taylor has been pretty good all year defensively, the offense is just now starting to catch up.

I won't say Jackson played terrible. He played like a Redshirt Sophomore QB in a big game. 11 of 19 124 yds 1 TD and 1 Int. The Int was a pass tipped to a D-lineman. Kurtis Rourke is very well seasoned being a redshirt Senior his Redshirt sophomore year he threw 11 TD and 7 Int's. Jackson has some growing to do still but he didn't have a terrible performance.

The second season starts Friday and it it kind of a repeat of the season in regard to the NLC. Sectional 18 welcomes a couple of South Bend schools while Sectional 11 welcomes FW North. To the NLC schools in Sectional 18, NorthWood got the best draw when it comes to playing a couple more weeks. Even with all of their injuries, I think they play for a sectional championship. Washington and Riley are just bad. St. Joe is probably on the same level as NW. The top bracket of 18 is a bit better than the bottom. I don't see Mishawaka losing to any of those teams (sorry Northridge / Plymouth) and should make their way into the championship...where they will face NW...and they will run all over NW. Sectional 11 gets a bye this week, however, I feel like there will be a rematch of the in season game that Warsaw lost by 4. If all goes as it should in that sectional...Concord will host Warsaw for the sectional championship. While a lot of folks are picking Concord to make a run in 5a this year (rightfully so as they have a heck of a team)...I am going with Warsaw actually having the advantage playing AT Concord. The weather will be different when that game rolls around...and playing on grass in northern Indiana weather...I think as long as Warsaw protects the ball...they win that game. Its been an interesting year in the NLC with Plymouth showing such great improvement. I think everyone knew they would be better...but they far exceeded my expectations. Concord wins an outright title which is typically hard to accomplish in the NLC as the top is usually pretty even. NW and Northridge had down years, but each team has a bright outlook as they appear to have some younger fellas getting some playing time...that should pay off next year. Wawasee, hopefully the guys buy into that offense, as they have the athletic ability and size to complete. The one negative is...poor Goshen...they need to do better. They...were...awful this year and I will leave it at that. Mishawaka and or Concord / Warsaw have the best chances of representing the NLC throughout the tourney...and I look forward to cheering whichever teams are still playing each week.

@WestfieldRocks Go back to the 2021 State Final vs. Center Grove. #35 a Defensive player (for Westfield) in the 4th quarter loses his helmet. Not as the result of a penalty. He continues to participate in the play. He is then is assessed a 15 penalty for illegal participation BECAUSE he continued to participate with improper equipment, and participated in the tackle. Why would the play be whistled "dead"?

1. NO, it should have started on the ensuing snap of the ball. 2. This has been lobbied for in the ensuing years, so a change may be coming at some point..... The R, was incorrect in starting the clock in this situation.

Thank you for your very thoughtful explanation. There are a number of significant points you make, but I’ll only address one, or we’ll be here all day. Just my opinion: Except for a handful of really elite crews, the ratings calculated to determine playoff advancement have only a very loose correlation with officiating proficiency. Go ahead, change my mind.

They graduate double digit seniors and didn't play a football schedule in junior high. I think it will take more than a good game against South Putnam to get this program in a positive direction

How much is A.R. getting paid to be on the field? ON THE FIELD OF PLAY? You don't get to "Tap Out" without a good reason. "Winded" or "needed a breather" is not acceptable. Admittedly, the entire team lost that game, not just A.R. There were so many catchable passes dropped that all the blame should not be on A.R. but the second he "tapped out" he should have been benched immediately and let Flacco finish the game.

I don't think its so much winning or losing as it is connecting with the rest of the state. Only 1 of 97 games played by the SIAC teams so far involved an "outside" opponent.

Drop down to 2A first, then back down to 1A if they get tripped up in 2A on the way down ... assuming they kept their 1A enrollment. If not, they would go the way of folks like Linton and Scecina that went up, didn't get enough points, but by the time reclassification rolled around they had enrollment growth that kept them in their SF'd class.

It's interesting that folks seem to be saying this, but it's not accurate. Only seems that way because the traditional idea that ALL privates have ALL the advantage and dominate, especially in 1A is a little more nuanced than a bumper sticker. Still a few remaining in 1A: Providence (9-0 currently) - Still in it. May have a shot, but more likely than not to be eliminated by South Putnam if not earlier. Greenwood Christian (7-3) - Just got eliminated last week in first round by Eastern Green, a public school. Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian (1-8) - Just got eliminated last week in first round by North Miami, a public school. Faith Christian (2-5) - Not eligible for post-season. Given that they lost 68-0 to 3-7 Clinton Central, I'll go out on a limb and say, if they were eligible for post-season, they would have been eliminated last week. Also some homeschools that are in there, but not eligible for tourney and would last long if they did. A couple of charters in there too. Bowman's 0-10 and eliminated in first round by 3-7 North Newton who has two of their wins courtesy of Bowman. Irvington Prep is 0-8 including a first-round exit, 60-0, at the hands of now 5-5 Clinton Central.

The way Lutheran took apart Heritage Christian 49-7, I don't think North Judson could beat them this year. We will never know because Lutheran is in 2A.

I agree with Coach Comer it was one of the oddest endings I've ever seen. I also agree it is disappointing to his kids. What I will say is that even though there was a bad call in Danville's view and maybe in the officials view. Brebeuf did still have to score and kick a PAT to win the game. Danville still had the opportunity to stop Brebeuf Jesuit again. You will hear coaches tell players all the time "Control what you can control". You can't control an officials call. At that point the only thing Danville could control was the next play. Just food for thought. Question for those at the game. Did Danville have any timeouts left? If so might have been a time to call a timeout before that last play and regroup your defense and get them focused back in (of course that is in hindsight).

A special IU team? Maybe, but the rules have changed. Free transferring, NIL and a coach that knows how to win. A once in a lifetime team? Doubtful. If you really believe that then you’re not really thinking this out. Transfers and NIL have more or less evened the recruiting field. Cig brought in guys from JMU that know how to win. And high school players and guys looking to the portal for something better will see that. This is sustainable. At least until the NCAA and the Big 4 conferences can agree on some rules. IU May never catch Ohio State in recruiting wars, but play for pay has brought them a lot closer.

By the book it was correct, but no game should have an ending like that for that kind of infraction. We forget sometimes that these young men are just that, young, and they get excited, especially when it looks like they've won the game and are moving on in the sectional. If you can't flag it when it happens, then you shouldn't flag it a full 5 minutes after the last play. Some digression is appropriate, imho.

Which is dumb. Let’s say OSU sneaks by PSU in two weeks and that is the Nittany Lions’ only loss…they gonna drop to 7-8 and then waltz into the playoff, with a possible home game to boot. Conference title game losers gonna get screwed for playing an extra game. Certainly if it’s OSU in this scenario though, Ryan Day will just get the rules changed immediately afterwards.

All the rights money goes in the pocket of the little sign painter who made it -- Laurie Wenger. "I have MS," says Wenger, who retired from Notre Dame in 2009 but still lives in South Bend. "So it really helps pay my medical bills." How a simple sign painter has made all that money off Notre Dame starts with Lou Holtz. He was the new football coach at Notre Dame in 1986 when he was leafing through an old football picture book and saw a black-and-white picture of a sign that said, "Play Like a Champion Today." He had to have one. He dispatched one of his assistant coaches, George Stewart, to the campus sign shop. "Coach wants something like this painted up ASAP," Stewart said, handing Wenger a piece of paper. It took about three days.
