The more I read the JH post it makes my brain hurt. Great high school programs have a great youth program where the coaches buy into vison and philosophy like CG. It sounds like the Noblesville youth coaches know what's best and would rather do that then help build the success.

To pull this from the discussion of SOS and rankings and to the actual game at hand ... These two teams mirror each other. Both spread offenses with a home-run hitter in the passing game, accurate junior QBs and very good, fast defenses. Chatard's Jack Harrington does a nice job of spreading the ball around. They use a lot of play-action and misdirection in the passing game to get guys open, and Julio Graves is a big-time deep threat. He torched Roncalli last week on three deep balls. The running game is solid - Daniel Adams is small, but quick. Daniel Shaw isn't much bigger - both are 5-7 - and didn't play last week. They have similar stats - they've combined for nearly 1,500 yards, splitting the carries and yards almost exactly evenly between them. I like their TEs, who they threw to a lot last week. Chatard's defense is very fast, with excellent LBs. Zach Gantz has 4 INTs this season, and LB Declan Hostettler had a pick-6 against Roncalli last week. You could almost replace names with New Pal. Jacob Davis spreads the ball around well, throws a really good ball both short and deep, and uses all of his receivers. He's also a solid runner. Austin McMahan is a deep threat, with six TDs of 40+ yards this season. NP likes to spread the field both vertically and horizontally with the passing game, and also with the running game, with the threat of the jet sweep with their slots complementing Josh Ranes up the middle. Ranes has 1,841 yards and 23 TDs this season - a big, power back who has excellent speed and is a threat to take it to the house on any play. NP's line is big and good, anchored by Brock Brownfield, who has multiple Power 4 offers. Defensively, NP has been very stout against the run, holding teams to 2.5 yards per carry (in the half of the unfinished game against Decatur Central, the Hawks had 25 yards on 8 carries), led by 2x All-State DL Michael Thacker and a deep linebacking corps. Conner Jacobia has four INTs this year, while Caden Jacobia and Aalijah Lissade both have INTs in each of the last two games. From watching both teams (I've seen every NP snap and have watched Chatard on film), they're very closely matched and mirror each other. Both teams are very disciplined, well-coached, have playmakers on the perimeter, fast, physical lines and defenses and playmakers throughout. Turnovers and special teams will be key. NP has had two long kick returns the last two weeks to set up scores, BC gave up a kick return TD and fumbled a punt return but also forced a turnover on a punt last week. Both are *really* aggressive on the punt block. Chatard has given up some yards in the running game, NP has given some up in the passing game. If NP can establish its running game and control the LOS, it will be successful. If Chatard can dial up some big plays in the air, it will be successful. If either team can win the turnover or special teams battle, that will go a long way in deciding it. I'll have the audio broadcast at NewPalRadio.com. Metzger averages roughly three carries a game with an average of 7.3 yards per carry. More important than the yards per carry is that plenty of those carries are conversions for 1st downs that keep drives alive.

Under National Federation rules, contact against the punter is excused if the defense touches the kick near the kicker, and the contact is unavoidable. Interestingly enough, there is nothing in the rule that requires the player touching the kick and the player contacting the kicker be the same person.

I coached with guys like the one in the post. The biggest headache in the world to be working on development and all you are hearing is development doesn't win at that age.

Possible, from a competitive and travel standpoint (heck, it's a lot easier for Avon to travel to Ben Davis than to Noblesville), but the other issue is this. The HCC schools are *very* good in non-football/basketball sports. It's the best baseball conference in the state, and one could argue, also the best in soccer, softball and one of the best in volleyball. It's probably a slight cut above the MIC in girls hoops, and even/slightly behind the MIC in football and boys hoops. However, in the other sports - baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, individual sports except track & field and wrestling - the MIC schools would struggle to be competitive with the HCC ones. You also have an issue where the MIC schools are somewhat notorious for not bringing much of a road crowd, whereas the HCC schools typically have decent support. I've heard that stated by ADs as a reason to *not* invite a team into a conference that would otherwise be a good geographical and competitive fit. If you have to have 3/4 home games in multiple sports against teams that aren't going to bring a crowd, that can cost you a *lot* of money. That's another reason why you might not see such a merger.

His love for this state and the student athletes of this state needs to be commemorated in some sort of way by the IHSAA. They should name the HoF tournament after him or something. I would have burnt out 20 years ago.

Pretty much. They've done a good job of scheduling aggressively in the non-con, but when there's only a couple of quality opponents in the NCC its hard to prepare yourself for the 6A/5A tourney. Most of the past decade the only schools that have been able to challenge them in conference have been Harrison, McCutcheon and Kokomo. I just don't trust them to be battle tested come tournament time. I hope the two WL schools stay on Jeff's schedule. I believe Jeff picked up North Central in week 5 next year, so I'm assuming the NCC schedule is shifting around quite a bit.

Because those "coaches" think it's more important to win some rec league game than get the kids prepared for Jr High/High School. Our Head Coach is directly involved with our youth program. We are also told that wins/losses don't matter at the youth level. The main objective for the youth coaches is to keep the kids coming back and make sure the kids get on the field. If you win at the youth level and your high school isn't successful, are you really benefitting the program or just your ego?

It reminds me of when I used to coach girls basketball and we'd coach some of our junior high travel teams. We'd spend our time teaching fundamentals and we'd play man-to-man defense because we knew it would teach our kids to *learn to play defense.* We're still learning how to dribble, pass and shoot. Invariably, you'd run into some daddy-ball coaches with backwards hats who did nothing but full-court press and play 2-3 zone in a sixth-grade girls "B" game with a lot of beginner players, and they'd be over there congratulating themselves on their coaching acumen because press would yield 4-5 steals for layups a game. I always took satisfaction when our kids would beat theirs in high school games a few years later, because we'd actually spent time drilling fundamentals instead of teaching them defense consisted of making one trap and then getting a steal, which works in sixth grade but doesn't work as well with 11th graders.

Like a youth coach who thinks they know everything. At least that seems what it is in that post. I will state very clearly: One of the BEST programs in the State of Indiana is Center Grove. Their youth program is also one of the best in the State. They run the Wing T in their Bantham League and with their Junior Trojans. You have seen them at the High School level run a little more spread because they have been blessed with some QB's that bring a skill set for that. Their bread and butter has been the Wing T and I would bet every player on their varsity roster can line up in the Wing T and run plays out of it in their sleep because they have been doing it since the 2nd grade. The youth coaches have to buy into it. The Power T as well as the Wing T can lend itself to youth football because you don't need giant lines to run it. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade should be about teaching it after that they should know it well.

I think everyone who coaches knows this type of guy. The youth coach that complains the entire time on Friday nights. The guy who played a little bit in high school but doesn't really know football. If this is the type of coach their youth program consists of, no wonder he wasn't successful. I love his line; we are forced to run an offense for which the kids aren't suited. It's the T. You're blocking defenders and running the football. If you don't have kids who can block and run the ball, what offense are you suited for? Noblesville hasn't had a winning season in 20 years. It's not all Dave Sharpe's fault.

I would think if you can lose to Fort Wayne South you can lose to anyone remaining in 3A. Including an undefeated Maconaquah squad that has to be feeling very confidant after winning the 1st Sectional Title in school history. I'll never count out FW Luers from winning a Title considering the comp they typically face in the playoffs is a step below the best they see from the SAC. But, as others have mentioned in this thread, this doesn't feel like a vintage Luers team that should strike fear in their opponents.

True story, Wife is AWESOME (goes without saying) however in 2010, I did interview for Delphi HC job, she was like cool, have fun, then next day I get a call back from AD wanting to set up final round with Board with another candidate, so I told the wife that and she was like, wait what/?? I go well if I do well there, they could offer me the job, she then goes, OH, well I am not moving from Crown Point, I didn't think you would actually have a shot. Thanks Honey!!! Point being, SHE IS AWESOME, because she knew going into this thing called marriage I was all in of Coaching, and lets me do my thing, but she is not the Coaches Wife in the stands every Friday, etc etc so lesson be learned there, make sure you explain ENTIRE process to your significant other so that you do not have to call the AD and apologize for "wasting their time" which was not a waste but still...... I will just wait to be the HC at Winfield High School., Oh wait, they built Taft middle school instead. 🙂 Fun Fact still, I got a message from my old retired principal just last week at like 1:40......."turned on the tV and there you were". yup, its on rotation now on Game Show Network. I think there is better competition between the teams left in 5A. East Central bumping from 4A to 5A has helped that. I am still a proponent that there should be 32 teams in 6A and 32 teams in 1A the 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A can all be 62 teams. I think that will make 5A even stronger. While competition between teams left in 5A is even I still think some 4A teams could compete or beat the 5A teams left (New Pal, Chatard, Martinsville, Mishawaka, East Noble). I think if you went to 62 teams in 5A you would get at least half of the remaining teams playing in 4A in 5A and it would be even more competitive. Just my opinion.

Hebert is a great football coach. He won a lot of games there as a player, assistant and HC. He deserves a lot of respect for what he has accomplished at Carmel. And from what I have been told and my interactions with him, he is a great dude. His comment on the relationships that he has built over the years speaks to that character. And him saying that he is not done with coaching should ring out with other coaches around the area. If you want a great addition to your staff, I would blow up his phone this morning and get him hired now. He would bring a ton of value to any program. As far as who will take over there, I think it's very early, and they will most certainly get a ton of interest. I would think that they will want to stick with someone that has "big school" on their resume due to the volume and sheer ancillary factors that go into running that size of a program. We are talking well over 200 players and a plethora of non-coaching related items that have to be dealt with in a program that size. Being a program at a mega-school is not about x's and o's. It's about managing the program and hiring the right guys to do the actual coaching. Almost a CEO type position. That is a different dynamic.

I agree , you can't judge teams from one year till the next , BTF should know this (Penn vs Snider 03-04). Look at LN this year , they were beaten last year by 48 to BD and 20 to CG . And Crown Point is much better this year than last .

They are both right on the cusp and a good win by one and some losses by others in the poll would open up a spot. However, there are a lot of great teams sitting at #101

Lafayette Jefferson might have something to say for Merrillville. Of course the Bronchos have to play disciplined defense so Warsaw won't eat that clock up on them. I haven't watched them play this year but they have been lighting up the scoreboard in many games. They have a common opponent (Laff Jeff and Merrillville) in Michigan City, Laff Jeff won 17-13 and Merrillville won 14-12 so looks like it could be a great game. If both win their regional I think the game will be at Laff Jeff. On the other side you have Decatur Central hosting East Central, the winner of that game might be at Lucas Oil Stadium for the South. East Central while not quite the same as last season is still a very solid team. Decatur Central always has athletes. Just curious why the statement about Decatur Central. A lot of the players that played FW Snider in the State Championship last year were Sophomores. This year they are Juniors with the exception of Dodo who will be a SR. They will return pretty much the same squad next year too. They lost in week 1 to Columbus North who was pretty solid, and lost in week 3 to Martinsville (who made a miraculous comeback similar to Brownsburg/Ben Davis game) but even Martinsville is still playing in 4A Regional. The game I really wanted to see was DC vs New Pal, it was tied 21-21 when the game was called and never resumed (not sure why they didn't finish on Saturday it still baffles me). I'm just curious of the disdain for the Hawks because I don't think they are a terrible team. I do think they have a battle coming up with East Central though.

Yes, they could look in Bloomington. There is this Coach Curt Cignetti, if they google him they will see he wins. Only kidding! I have been pondering some possible candidates since last night.

Personal opinion, but I think it is just as desirable as it would be if they were in a conference, including the MIC. Conferences don’t mean much beyond schedule stability. At Carmel, the goal is a state championship, not conference. Cathedral has remained a top job without any conference affiliation. Carmel will as well. Center Grove will be fine if they don’t find a conference.

Hopefully, would be nice to see someone local down there. Shooting for East Noble, Luers/Garrett, and Adams Central.

From the perspective of someone from Fort Wayne, I think the excitment around the East Noble program, the continuation of Adams Central's dominance in 2A, and the emergence of Huntington North has overshadowed Garrett a little bit. No offense to them, I just didn't realize they were 12-0 until a few days ago. Good luck to them the rest of the way. I like the Luers program, but I'm not going to hold my breath on them winning 3A. It's yet to happen. Good team this year, but they've had better. We'll see.

They are the epitome of a SOLID team. Only loss was to Snider where they were essentially out-atheleted.....They have no "4.5" speed guys or D-1 talent but are extremely hard nosed. Good size on both lines and a dual threat QB. Played a Dwenger team whose "strength" was in the trenches and completely obliterated the Saints in the trenches while handing them there worst post season loss in the programs history. The previous week the also shut out a Leo team with 2 committed D-1 kids on their offense. They are definitely for real and ,in my opinion, going to playing on Thanksgiving weekend.....

You realize New Pal practices against New Pal every day, right? I hear this every year. "They don't play anybody" (which we'll hear unless the schedule includes 1991 Ben Davis, 2007 Warren Central, et al), "their schedule is weak." And yet, NP has won six regional titles in the last 11 years, several of them in a class higher than their enrollment level. They faced a likely 5A State Finals team in Week 2. They obliterated a ranked Greenfield-Central team in Week 6. They faced a decent Kokomo team in Week 1 - one down by their standards, but still solid. New Pal doesn't duck anyone. They've played Whiteland, Westfield and Center Grove in the past in the non-conference (as well as Brebeuf when they've been surging). They've play Decatur Central every year for the last four seasons. Schedules don't win championships. Players do.
