  1. This is the key. Frankly, getting in, and whatever happens after that, is gravy. Like I said, if they finish 10-2 and go to some random bowl game, it’s not the Committee’s fault. They win either of those two games and nobody would question them getting in. They didn’t take care of business when it was right there in front of them. Let the chips fall where they may.

  2. One thing Illinois - which has a 1.65 multiplier for p/p and charter schools - does is have "multiplier waivers." Basically, it's a reverse success factor. If you haven't won a trophy in the tournament in that sport (or, in football, a tournament game) in two years, the multiplier is waived and your school is classed on your enrollment. Illinois also has a success factor, but it only applies to p/p/charter schools (you bump up if you win two State Finals trophies in a rolling three-year span).

  3. I heard from a little birdie that @Coach Nowlin our local celebrity was going to up the ante from his WoF success and make a run on Jeopardy. Little birdie was me by the way and I approve this rumor!

  4. No, it’s not a penalty. Here’s the actual rule: “When any required player equipment is missing or worn improperly, an official's time-out shall be declared. If the missing or improperly worn equipment is detected during the down or subsequent dead-ball action related to the down without being directly attributable to a foul by an opponent or if a player is wearing otherwise legal equipment in an illegal manner, the player shall be replaced for at least one down, unless halftime intermission or an overtime intermission occurs. If proper and legal equipment has become improperly worn through use but prompt repair is possible and does not delay the ready-for-play for more than 25 seconds, such repair may be made without replacing the player for at least one down.”

  5. Indiana beat every team on it's schedule including a top 5 team on the road. If Notre Dame did that we wouldn't be having this conversation. They didn't however.

  6. I think the law of unintended consequences is in effect here. With the expanded playoff format, conference championship games will disappear.

  7. The real trouble lies in the fact that this weekend's championship games for the most part are pointless. IU and OSU will remain in the top four regardless of the outcome and getting out of the game healthy should be the main priority for both teams. While I know it'd mean a lot for the Hoosiers to win the B10 title, if the national title is the goal, you are one snap away from a travesty. In the SEC, I think the committee has Bama in regardless of this weekend's result as you cannot, with a straight face, put Oklahoma and A&M in, while leaving the SEC championship game runner up, out. Same in the ACC. Duke? Really? I have no clue how that tiebreaker worked out in their favor but what a cluster all of those 6-2 teams are. Lastly, I rarely have sympathy for teams that lose 3 games but are you going to look 9-3 Texas (who has wins over Vandy and A&M) in the eye and tell them that they are not worthy because they challenged themselves in the non-conference traveling to Ohio State, instead of scheduling UTEP? I know the new format makes more games matter and gives teams more margin for error, but this season, maybe the four team format would have been sufficient? Mega conferences have created tremendously imbalanced schedules and sometimes the luck of the draw gives teams an advantage, or vice versa.

  8. I sent ONE Varsity Player off the field this year because of the "uniform situation". He decided that even though I told him pre-game/at the coin toss/after play began.....That he needed to tuck his jersey directly into his pants with no undershirt exposed and no midriff exposed and have the elastic with his knee pads around his knee caps; He couldn't do it. Funny how that was rectified by somebody on the Coaching staff after he went off the field. 🤣 I ABSOLUTELY told (via pregame email) EVERY school (from the AD, HC to the Assistant AD's) what I expected to see with uniforms once the game began. Should other crews decide that they are in not in line with the NFHS rules, and other directives....I cannot control that. I can tell you at this year's State Finals, it was also patently obvious that some of the crews were not at all concerned about the uniform situation. I WAS! And I had 'no issues' with compliance in total. If you want "drip"... Do that pre and post-game. But during game play you are a part of a TEAM! Everyone should look basically the same, and in compliance with the rules in place. There is no "I" in team! Seems like that has been said for years, Why now is it looked at as 'passe'?

  9. Hats off to Ball State for keeping the offer. Not sure every school around the nation would do the same in today's day and age. From what I hear, their getting a good one.

  13. Notre Dame and Florida State finished with one loss. Notre Dame wins convincingly in the head to head matchup. Florida State wins the title. Something tells me you knew this. Side note: Old enough to be a “grandpa.”

  14. Thanks for the information. You have delved into it more than I have so that's greatly appreciated. I hadn't looked at the Harrell's site thinking they wouldn't have anything posted yet on next year's schedules, but obviously they have. I guess people will just have to sit back and wait for the dust to settle on this to find out how things will shake out.

  16. Coach Mallory is in his 40's I don't see him retiring from coaching anytime soon. Will he be coaching for another 20-30 years? Probably not that long unless he is looking to beat Bud Wrights tenure as a Head Coach. Coach Mal was HC at Kinghtstown for 2 years and has been at Lawrence North for the last 13 years.

  17. Cool beans. Will be fun to watch him perform as a DB. Indiana has a history of producing great DB's out of guys who also excelled in skilled positions in high school. A couple of them fairly recently. Hamilton Heights even got into the act a few years ago when Sterling Weatherford transitioned from WR in high school to starting DB at Miam of Ohio.

  18. @ptr I was looking at John Harrell’s website and I noticed some interesting scheduling information. Plainfield has released their entire schedule and Bloomington North is slotted to play them in week 5 which is exactly the same week Greenwood would play Plainfield. Based on this, I assume Bloomington North will just plug into Greenwood’s spot in the Mid-State schedule. This means they will only have weeks 1 and 2 open for non-conference games. Mooresville has been Bloomington North’s week 1 opponent the last four years so I’m sure that opens up week 1 for a replacement. BNL has been their week 2 opponent for the last five years. My assumption is that will continue and the week 6 game with Jeff (which is only one year old) as well as the week 7 game with Columbus East (which is four years old) will be dropped completely rather than moved to a different week. Therefore, this would mean Bloomington South will be their week 1 game. Unless BNL drops Martinsville (who they’ve played in week 1 the last eight years) and moves their game with Bloomington North up to week 1, I don’t see South playing the Cougars any other week. As for Bloomington South, a week 1 game with Bloomington North fits well on their schedule as their week 2 game with Martinsville has been the norm since 2006 after the Artesians left Conference Indiana the previous season. Playing Bloomington North in week 1 would end the three year series with Columbus East unless South filled in for Bloomington North as Columbus East’s week 7 opponent. However, doing so would mean South’s week 7 game with Columbus North would need to be moved. If both South and Columbus North are independents then this shouldn’t be a problem. If South joins the HHC though then the series with Columbus North could be over. And if Bloomington South were to join the HHC then I assume they would just fill the spot vacated by Madison as each HHC team has non-conference games scheduled during the weeks they used to play the Cubs. No word on Columbus North’s schedule next year but, based on the last 26 years, we can safely assume they’ll be playing Columbus East in week 2. As for Southport, they will be going independent and already have eight of their nine regular season weeks filled. It appears they’re still in need of a week 8 opponent. Other than Terre Haute North in week 4, they don’t have a Conference Indiana team on their schedule.

  20. Basketball, boy and girls, has been moribund for several years now as well. And yes, it seems that the new AD believes Mr. Dudley can create the same competent football program as he did with baseball. We shall see. Mostly different athletes from a socioeconomic standpoint.

  21. Let’s go down the “murderers row” that the Irish beat this year: Purdue 56-30, 2-10 record Arkansas 56-13, record 2-10 Boise State 28-6, record 8-4 NC State 36-7, record 7-5 USC 34-24, record 9-3 Boston College 25-10, record 2-10 Navy 49-10, record 9-2 Pittsburgh 37-15, record 8-4 Syracuse 70-7, record 3-9 Stanford 49-20, record 4-8 I mean, the above speaks for itself. One of the worst schedules I have seen in awhile. What is their best road win? Pittsburgh??? Dude, you are way too knowledgeable about football to be even trying to justify the Irish. Stunning…

  22. Ha....Boonville was adamant they didn't want to be a member of the SIAC - but have no problem scheduling Bosse and Central in their open weeks. I better not type out the rest of what I'm thinking...

  23. As a coach I don't enjoy the rules and it is for reasons stated prior that they arent enforced universally. It isnt just week to week but ive been to many 6a games and it seems that those rules don't exsist at that level. Consistency is key weather its enforcing the uniform rules or the rules of the game.

  24. Random thoughts a couple of days before the title game: 1. IU has the 31st ranked recruiting class in the country as of today, which is 9th in the Big 10. While this is better than they have been, I still believe they need to get into the top 20 for long term stability 2. The line on the game this weekend started at Buckeyes favored by 5.5 points, then dropped 4.5 on Tuesday and just dropped to 4 points today. Heavy money going on the Hoosiers apparently. If I had no dog in the fight and I was a gambler, I would lay big money on the Buckeyes at that number. 3. If IU can get to 21 points, I like their chances. I can see IU winning 21-17 type of game. Both defenses are great

  25. I cheer for IU because I went there and hate Notre Dame because I didn't. What's hard to understand about that? I don't like Ohio State. I don't like Michigan. I don't like Purdue. Why would I like any of those schools?

  26. Exhibit A above. You, a ND fan, don't even know how the playoff selection works, yet it's tragedy they aren't going to make it? Just say it, you believe Notre Dame should be in because their name is Notre Dame. We all know it. Reality is that ND's schedule is a joke, they beat one halfway decent team all year, and lost to the two best teams on their schedule....one of them being a team with the same record jockeying for the last playoff spot. Notre Dame doesn't deserve anything this year. As far as the IU/ND basketball comparison, totally agree. Yet as an IU basketball fan I can totally accept that reality. IU has been largely irrelevant nearly my entire life and sans a few one of year downright bad. I have no shame in admitting that however. Notre Dame fans can't accept the fact that the sports has passed them by and they are no longer the center of college football. I get it.

  27. Big eh so long as there aren’t safety concerns. I suppose it’s possible coaches, generally, like the rules so they don’t have to be the bad guy policing how their players look.

  28. Tells me all I need to know. Good luck to your Hoosiers. IU basketball = ND football. Love the double standard though.

  29. That is not the job of the committee lol. 1-12 DO NOT make the playoff, good lord. The 5 highest rated conference champions all receive an automatic bid and then the rest of the field is compromised of the remaining 7 best at-large teams. Notre Dame is the last at-large team in the field as it stands....for now. I disliked Notre Dame long before I attended Cathedral. I don't like Notre Dame because their fans are obnoxiously arrogant despite being hardly relevant in nearly 40 years. The proof is in the pudding.

  30. No need to look up his number. Bobref gave me his email. If I want to be ignored by a higher up, I'll at least take an automated/ standard email reply over a secretary "taking a message." When I look in the mirror, I see too large of a belly but my reading skills are pretty good.

  31. It’s not just me Temp. Analysts, radio show hosts, tv personalities…….Vegas! Your beloved Sagarin. Just say it Temp, they look really good. Even Saban said their defense is much better than they were in weeks one and two when they lost by 4pts to two other Too 12 teams. I haven’t been this confident in a ND team since Lou Holtz. But hey, I get it. Losses matter.

  33. No clue? Well, I’m pretty sure it’s the two losses. I get it, win. Plain and simple. Just pointing out that ND being left out would be a blessing for everyone else. No one wants to play them right now.

  34. I read about 4 high profile girls basketball players (2 bring sisters) that have already left their teams mid-season this year. No specific word as of why, but if their teams aren’t producing it wouldn’t be a bad guess to say they are leaving to try to gain eligibility by next season. This is just getting crazy.

  36. I should have clarified, my suggestion of a transfer portal multiplier would be in addition to the success factor, not eliminating the success factor in favor of the transfer portal multiplier. The transfer portal multiplier would apply to all schools, not just P/P/C, so it would equally impose an increase in the school enrollment total for each student a school chooses to accept. No penalty would be applied for students a school is required by law to accept as residents of their geographic district. This would make enrollments a closer reflection of the inherent advantages some schools have from their location in, or in close proximity to, a population center they can pull students from. Where did I say anything in my post about P/P schools deliberately keeping enrollments below a certain number to stay in a lower class? For the vast majority of schools, that isn’t the reason they decline enrollment for certain students. Non-public schools can, and do, decline enrollment for students based upon a variety of factors such as historical attendance, disciplinary incidents, academic performance, services required to be provided to the student, or a combination of those factors. If a student moves into a public school district with a history of poor attendance, bad behavior, failing grades, and also happens to have an IEP, the public school has no choice but to accept the student. Non-public schools have a choice of whether to enroll that student or not. Do you think most private schools would enroll that student? There is also an high probability that the same student is also economically disadvantaged. Would any private schools offer a voucher (if they take vouchers) to that student and accept them? Is the conversation different if the student is a good athlete? That is why I am suggesting a transfer portal multiplier that would apply to every student a school enrolls that they had a choice to accept or decline. I do like and completely agree with your suggestion of a reducer based upon the percentage of special needs and FRL students. As I said above, I would be in favor of success factor for program specific success/dominance as well as my transfer portal multiplier for geographic and admission advantages. Add in your suggestion for a reducer based upon the percentage of disadvantaged students. Put those three things together and I think it brings us much closer to a true reflection of a school’s population and competitive level.

  37. To be honest, I’m really tired of the endless jibber jabber about who should or shouldn’t be in, and why or why not. It’s exhausting. And however it shakes out, there’s bound to be controversy, and we’ll have to listen to it all over again. And do you think it will be any different when they go to 16? No. Something radical has to be done. And I’ve got the solution. The NCAA’s FBS needs to go to an all-in tournament model. There are 136 schools in FBS. With 16 first round byes, it would take 8 rounds for a single-elimination tournament. There would be an 8 week regular season, which would mean absolutely nothing in terms of the postseason. Then the tournament would start. And to add to the drama, the byes and matchups would be determined by random drawing, say, using ping pong balls. The great thing is we know this would work. Indiana is living proof.

  40. I honestly think Penn State thought they could pry Elko from A&M, bringing him home back East. I believe they made a run at Drinkwitz at Missouri as well. I'm convinced that Jimmy Sexton is purposefully sabotaging Penn State with they way they did James Franklin who is also a CAA client. At least 3 different Sexton/CAA clients have all leveraged Penn State for extensions and raises.

  41. They’re in a bad spot, and I get what you’re saying. It’s hard to see the AD surviving this one, and, to me, even harder to see him surviving replacing James Franklin with a guy who wins and loses about the same, gets along with basically nobody, and isn’t interested in recruiting.

  42. The only uniform policing I care about is are the numbers clearly contrasting from the jersey (and that means purple-on-black or gray-on-white DO NOT COUNT. That's not enough of a contrast) so they can be seen from the stands and press box.

  43. You’re preaching to the choir. We hate being the uniform police. But we have very strict orders that come from way above my pay grade. So, please don’t blame the officials.

  44. I like these two the most. If we're going to have 2 classes with 32 (which I think should be 6A and 1A so add that to this list... LOL), then those two classes (6A and 5A currently) should have 32 schools in them at all times. That much I agree with. The largest school in 4A having to "bump up" isn't ideal and same for the largest school in 5A that could have to "bump" to 6A in an instance like described above. I think your idea is great but I think it works best with 6A and 1A having 32 teams. And yes, lets seed the dang thing already!

  45. This is just my philosophy, but my application of the multiplier for P/P/C that they have no in-district students is a way to offset the advantage of being able to choose who is permitted to attend those schools. P/P/C schools have the ability to accept/decline students from anywhere, while public schools cannot decline enrollment by students who reside in their geographic district. Basically, if the school has a choice of whether to allow a student to enroll, those students would be counted twice in my formula. Students that are entitled to attend based upon residency within the geographic district would only be counted once.
