  1. Like most problems, this one is multi-faceted. In no particular order, here are some reasons I think coaching shortages are brewing in most places across the country...... #1 Less young males who played HS football entering the teaching ranks #2 More requirements of classroom teachers that make it difficult to coach #3 Coaches frustrated with travel sports based problems, and schools devaluing education based athletics because in part of travel sports leading to sport specialization and lower participation in traditional school based athletics. #4 Coaches feeling like their program needs so much year round attention that they no longer feel that they can coach multiple sports

  2. We kept up with our youth players who then played high school and then hit them up when they attended college in town ... either at Purdue or Ivy Tech and got them to come back and help out with the youth program. Some of them came back to the city afterward and stayed on coaching; moving up to the junior high and now a couple help out at the high school level too.

  3. Some things that I think help: 1. The longer you are at a school, the easier it is to fill positions with young guys interested in coaching who played in your system and live in the community. These guys are usually in for the long term. Bonus is they already know and believe in the culture. 2. Don’t micro-manage your coaches. If you give them a job, let them do their thing. 3. Take responsibility when you screw up, and apologize when you do (this goes a long way with players too) 4. Give credit when and where it’s due. 5. Don’t waste their time. Don’t have meetings when phone calls, texts, emails will do. 6. As a head coach, don’t take your too seriously. You hear horror stories about certain HCs and their egos. I couldn’t coach for someone like that. 7. Take over for some of the crappy tasks that no one wants to do. Hope this is helpful.

  5. I remember a time where a coach would teach a subject they weren't licensed in order to coach. The most popular subject was special ed. I don't know of one coach who made it more than one year because of all the requirements, especially writing IEP's. If you don't know what you are doing, they can take a long time to finish. During football season, you don't know your Teacher of Record kids, let alone write an IEP for them. Thanks goodness that isn't the trend anymore.

  6. There will always be a shortage of good coaches, just like there will always be a shortage of good officials.

  8. The National Federation has changed the rule on low blocking in the free blocking zone. So, it may be useful to review that rule, just to get everyone current. The free blocking zone (FBZ) is an area that extends laterally 4 yds. to either side of the snap, and 3 yds behind both the offensive and defensive lines of scrimmage. A player is considered to be in the FBZ if any part of his body is in the FBZ at the snap. Blocking in the back is permitted in the FBZ when the following conditions are met: The block is by an offensive player The blocker is on the offensive line of scrimmage at the snap and within the FBZ The defender being blocked is in the FBZ at the snap The ball has not left the FBZ Blocking below the waist is permitted in the FBZ when the following conditions are met: Both the players are in the FBZ at the snap Both the players are on their respective lines of scrimmage at the snap The block occurs in the FBZ immediately at the snap. Important points: Only offensive players can block in the back. Either offensive or defensive players can block low. Although offensive players can block in the back, and either side can block below the waist, no one can clip.

  9. What drives the quick trigger is the one and done players.......It has created the mindset of "win right now". Calipari took it to a whole new level. The ripple effect still impacts the game. On the opposite side of it, I think Romeo Langford may have been the guy that accelerated Archie's demise. His season raised expectations through the roof; only to have been very underwhelming.

  12. Correct - if a program earns 2-5 points in a cycle they “stay up”. 6 points and they move up another class (unless they are in the highest class already). 1 or 0 points and they move down a class.

  16. More than half of Indiana school districts oppose choice expansion. Will it matter? https://www.indystar.com/story/news/education/2021/03/29/more-than-half-indiana-districts-united-against-choice-expansion/6971630002/ (Note: Story is behind a paywall) Sorry Ms. Larty, making your students politically "aware" is not your job. Teaching them is. And let's be clear, the ISTA/NEA is opposed to any state expansion of vouchers because it threatens the jobs of its government school employee members. There is no other logical reason, full stop.

  17. Maybe I misread the title of this thread?? Are we talking "travel ball" or the shortage of coaches?? I'm not really seeing how the 2 are relevant?? What I have said, time and time again on this forum, is that the demands/expectations of a core classroom teacher are making it more and more difficult to have the time/energy to be the HEAD COACH of a program. When the MIC was hiring coaches, I asked time and time again what the actual "job titles" were for the HC's in the building. Very few answered, but almost all I believe were some sort of strength coach or some "administration" position. There are still some out there, but you'll find very few HC's that still have a core teaching schedule on their plate. Making it such that a classroom teacher NO LONGER wants to be a HC because it's not a realistic option to do both. In my opinion, that's a problem.

  18. Have not seen this in the three different travel programs that my boys have played in ... the oldest will be playing in a new one this summer as he's too old to play in the one he played in last summer. Coaches have all kept families and kids in mind in scheduling and working out and have continually given parents warning about NOT having kids doing too much outside of practices to make sure that they don't hurt their arms or wear themselves out. Time off around holidays and consultations with families about travel have been the norm. High school coach has encouraged my oldest boy to do something over the summer to keep active, but high school play wasn't condition of doing so. I've heard some horror stories about travel, but haven't experienced it so far with my boys over the programs that we've been part of.

  19. A public service announcement... the following statements will rub some people the wrong way. Travel ball in some cases gives kids/parents the false perception that little Joey is bound for success at the next level. Some of these so called coaches would not know a fundamental if it smacked them in the face. I have observed this in AAU Basketball for instance kids that can't shoot a proper left handed lay up. They can shoot the three and have that crossover dribble down but don't understand about passing to the open man. I could go on and on but why? Too, too many promises of success at higher levels when they are playing at the lower levels. Why pump hot smoke when the truth should be told. Further, I have seen kids so tired they fall asleep in school because they are exhausted from too many activities. Coaches that operate the travel circuit and coach at the school level telling kids they will not make the school team if they do not come to every open gym and participate in his program. This is absurd there are just so many positions so why lie ? My school of thought is let a kid do whatever he wants to do because HE/SHE makes the choice not your selfish wants and needs. If a kid is a stud, their ability will come out early on. Coach 'em up and see how far they can go; however, don't give little Joey false hope he can be a starter on you Basketball team if he is built like a Noseguard with non-skill abilities. That is just wrong on so many levels. Bottom line its your choice parents, make sure you have little Joey's best interest in mind.

  20. I understand that folks can be a bit insular in looking at their teams...to a point, that particular pride can lead to future success and I will always encourage it. Good on you! Still, to be clear, as regards Columbus East picking up Chatard, as a Hoosier who is a bit proud as regards Indiana HS football (and a Chatard guy), I think it behooves me to actually compare and contrast a bit. In 2019 (per CalPreps/MaxPreps), Chatard was projected to defeat Louisville Male 34 to 21. Chatard was also projected to defeat Louisville Manual 40 to 12. In 2019, 3A Chatard ended the season in Indiana as the #3 team ALL CLASSES from 1A to 6A per CalPreps. Let’s repeat....#3 ALL CLASSES (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A). To also clarify, Columbus East has also found itself within the Top 10 All Classes in the last decade as well...or more than one occasion. In 2020, Chatard was projected to defeat Louisville Male 28 to 20. Chatard was also projected to defeat Louisville Manual 28 to 10. In 2020, Chatard ended the season in Indiana as the #6 team from 1A to 6A ALL CLASSES. Add that Columbus East has scheduled Whiteland who ended the season as the #10 team ALL CLASSES per Sagarin. With that, it’s great that Floyd Central is playing top flight competition and it’s a true path to getting better and I wish them well. Still, the time of achievement would appear to be when those games begin to get competitive. That is when the goal has been achieved.

  25. Why not just reduce the overall size, scope, and power of the federal government back to the constitutional mandate envisioned by the founding fathers? This would greatly reduce the power and corruption surrounding the elected body and they could go back to serving their constituents instead of their political party.

  26. https://reason.com/2021/03/26/abolishing-the-filibuster-is-about-power-not-anti-racism/ Agreed. The filibuster needs to stay. But if the Democrats succeed is having it banned then they will rue the day the did it.

  28. I urge your compatriots in South Carolina to investigate the use of a true system of promotion & relegation for your football playing schools. It makes all this mostly enrollment based & "success factor" nonsense go away. High school football teams will be classified based on the historical successes and failures of their overall program, not their arbitrary enrollment figure.

  29. No, they don't. Only if you allow it to be so, just the same as in a public sector job.
