  1. I think you have the wrong Donnie Baker. I swear to God you do

  2. Agree with you here. There's a certain threshold where # of students become irrelevant when trying to field a 100-150 man football team grades 9-12. Every 6A team has the bodies to do this. I actually think a school of 5,000 discourages participation, especially in a sport like football. I also think Carmel loses a ton of feeder kids to schools like Cathedral, Brebeuf, Guerin, etc for this exact reason across all sports.

  3. Ron Sexton (aka Donnie Baker, Floyd the Trucker, Kenny Tarmac and so many others) was so amazingly talented. I met him early in my teaching career when I was the GM of WRFT at Franklin Central. He was a big time believer in the power of high school radio, which gave him his start. Many also don't realize that he was a talented sports anchor back in the Mark Patrick days at WISH-TV in Indy. He served on IHSAA broadcasts as well when WNDY had the rights to the state tourney. To say I knew him well would be an overstatement, but enough people who I know have nothing but high praise for him as a man. He'll be missed. Linked is one of my favorite Bob & Tom bits where two of Ron's characters met up in the Ronaverse. That guy was so talented. The degree of difficulty of this as a voice actor is ridiculous.

  4. I have another thing to add... and that is that I know in Linton and for other men kids from small school football programs, it is a HUGE honor to be selected to play in all-star games... especially with a state north-south game. These kids are held in high regard for such an honor and the town they represent are extremely proud.... none of these guys is going Div 1 or heading to the NFL... so it truly is a big moment to take the field with fellow players from across indiana. I don't want to see these events disappear.

  5. On the face of it, our brains are suspended in fluid. When our head is in motion and suddenly stops your brain is still in motion until it hits the side of your skull. You can put all the padding you want over your head, but the fact remains when your head stop’s suddenly, your brain is still going to slam up against your skull. I sent a text to the local trainer and asked if he could provide some data as to their effectiveness. He responded with “they don’t work, if they did we wouldn’t walk on the field without them.”

  6. I’ve got better things to do than to argue with GID’s resident referee shill.

  7. Agree with all of that. I'd like to see how Carroll does this season before I anoint them as the new Penn of the north. They barely escaped Snider, North Side, Lafayette Jeff, and HSE last year. But they did it nonetheless. It's really going to come down to Doug Dinan's burning passion. If he wants it bad enough, he has the resources to get there.

  9. And no one would find such a self-study credible.

  10. What IO was saying was I see no real chance of significantly lowering head trauma in this game until we can change physics or somehow change the viscosity of a player’s Cerebrospinal Fluid. The rest of it is just what the local ATC said. I think the real issue with any of this type of tech is the companies themselves are not usually in a position to have the research done, Per Bob’s study posted. Riddel or Schutt may have the resources, but does it really make financial sense for them to fund a study that may not add to the bottom line. I think we have made huge strides in technique changes and at least recognizing there is a problem. I really believe in the near term that’s probably where we need to focus our energy.

  11. That's all true but in a sport that has a finite # of positions for only X amount of kids, you're going to max yourself out of those extra 1,000 boys pretty quick. Carmel's shear number of kids certainly doesn't hurt its cause but I wouldn't say it's given them an over the edge advantage. They've been pretty pedestrian the last few seasons all things considered.

  12. If I had 2,000 boys to choose from and created a pretty good team and then someone else said, "Hey, I've got another 1,000 boys that look like the 2,000-boy population you just created your team from," I'm pretty sure I would look through the additional 1,000 as opposed to waiving them off. Realistically, if someone said, "I've got another 20 boys," I'd probably waive it off as not necessarily worth the time/payoff, but for an additional 1,000, even if just 15% were interested in being part of the football team, the likelihood of improving on the original team from the 2,000-boy population is decent.

  13. 5000+ enrollment is at least subject to a law of diminishing returns if it isn't detrimental, so I agree with your main point. I don't know if there's that much substantive difference even down to 2000. The most important raw number would be how many seniors a program can consistently generate over the years. Enrollment helps, but--to your point--not as much as many members here would argue. There are only so many spots on the field. There are only so many guys willing to be on the team in a two deep or deeper role. Nobody can hide from the physicality of this game. There will always be athletes at schools that will not play. Football isn't for everyone. But Center Grove has more 6A state championships than any one of Ben Davis, Carmel, and Warren. Enrollment only increases the opportunity to find those players, not the likelihood. That is not an insignificant distinction.

  18. Making people laugh is one of the most difficult things to do. Mr Sexton was able to do that in spades. Thank you sir for your contribution to mankind, rest easy, I for one will miss your genius.

  20. Listened to a little bit of the Mater Dei preview show tonight. Sounds like Coach Goebel thinks this MD team might be the least experienced team in the history of football😀 Straight from the Lou Holtz playbook. #Sandbag

  21. This is great for the sport. Based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever, part of me believes that Carmel felt they were too good for this match up in the past, and if things continue to trend in the direction they are, Westfield may actually be the one feeling that way in the coming years.

  22. Warren is ducking CG under the disguise of racism when it’s really just virtue signaling, hurt feelings and repeated beat downs.

  23. I think you may be right. I wish that wasn’t the case. Personally, I would have scheduled 1 area (East Noble or that conference)team or maybe a Mishawaka:South Bend team. And the. Maybe a Region or Indy(New Pal type) of team as the extra two. Why BD scheduled two games that will show them nothing other than how manage a roster after injuries is beyond me.

  24. I'm presuming the students show up in full force during big games? If not, that's a serious problem. It's hard to not get pumped up for high school football. Too bad more people are interested in universities they have no association with and overpaid NFL franchises. Why not support the kids in their own communities? Hard to beat those Snider/Penn games for $7. Same could be said for rivalries in every area of the state.

  26. Agree on Patterson and splitting hairs but I just don’t think that you can replace guys like Mickens on D and Jackson on O and not skip a beat. Luter and Duff are the real deal though. I really think BD is the MIC favorite and Warren, LC and LN are neck and neck (and neck) for that runner up spot.
