The 2024 Let's Run Up the Score! Thread - week #6

Even with the crummy weather around most of the state many Run-Em-Up offenses still had it in gear against apparently hapless defenses.  Heck we even had not one, not two, but three completely unnecessary 70-0  RUTS games this week.  And by request a victims list has been added.

While there are signs teams really did not run up the score, there are cases where I do think the intent is to run it up. Columbia City was up 42-0 on New Haven with less than a minute left in the 1st half. While mistakes and turnovers by New Haven did not help, the game was well in hand before the half. They had already blocked 2 punts, returning one for a TD. CC runs their punt block again and get the block. With 15.5 seconds left in the half, they could have......actually SHOULD have taken a knee; but nope. so it's now 49-0 at the half. With a running clock in the 2nd half, they get a TD late, now 68-0, line up for a PAT, and run a fake. While the snap was bobbled a bit, it was clear from the way the wings played it, the fake was called beforehand. So they get the 2 points to get to 70. It was also clear that Coach Fox was trying to run it up.

Well, at least it wasn't as bad as in 1994.  DeKalb beat New Haven 97-0 that year.

I guess the point is that in the past 100 years every school has been an offender and a victim.

Hagerstown, Hammond Noll, North Vermillion, Pioneer, Seeger, South Decatur, Sullivan, and Triton were all offenders twice and victims once. Whiting was an offender twice and victim twice. Finally, Perry Central was an offender twice and a victim 3 times. This is just from the multi offender and victim list. I don't know about anyone who isn't a multi-week offender.

Mississinewa has been an offender multiple times this year according to the offender list.  Once Mississinewa gets up by 35 points and the running clock starts, they pull their starting offense.  They have left the starting defense on the field until the opponent pulls their starting offense.  This does a couple of things.  By pulling the starting offense it allows the second string to play against a 1st team defense and gain experience.  As the game goes on, the  third and fourth string offenses get on the field.  Defensively, Mississinewa plays the starters against the opponent starters and subs in slowly the 2nd and 3rd stringers until the opponent pulls the starting offense.  Alexandria played their starting QB the entire game along with their starting offense, so Mississinewa played their starting defense the bulk of the game.  Against Blackford, Mississinewa had pulled their starting defense and when Blackford got to the 2 yard line Mississinewa put in at least 1 starting LB to try to prevent the score, but Blackford was able to score and become the first team to score on Mississinewa this year.  The Mississinewa/Blackford game could and should have been much worse but due to the weather the score was much closer than it should have been.

I don't know much about Mississinewa (other than I once turned off the beaten path to view the historical graves...I enjoyed it...my wife did not)...so an honest question.  Do the fans at Mississinewa hate their schedule?  It appears they could be the poster child for a team that plays a regular season with not much competition...then gets beat in the playoffs.

Mississinewa's schedule isn't great, but the way in which they are beating teams is still impressive. Alexandria knows how to put points on the board and Mississinewa shut them out. If they can do the same thing to Eastbrook, I think Mississinewa will be just fine in the 3A playoffs. The only thing I would be concerned with is the starters not playing a full game yet. You need a few of those games to know what it feels like to be tired in the 4th quarter and still battle at a 100% speed. Nonetheless, I applaud them for the year they are having, very impressive.

Honestly a lot of fans want Mississinewa to leave the CIC because of the weakness of the Football.  The other sports both boy's and girl's, Mississinewa is usually towards the top or competing for the CIC title year in and year out.  The CIC is very competitive across the board in all other sports.  Each school in the conference has a couple of less than average sports and sometimes it is due to numbers.  The other issue is if Mississinewa would leave the CIC where would they go?  The travel time would be much greater than now.  At one time Tipton and Peru were both in the CIC, which these two schools were the longest drives for Mississinewa.  Eastbrook and Frankton replaced Tipton and Peru.  Rumors are that Tipton wanted to come back but was denied, Lapel wants to join but Frankton has lobbied to keep that from happening, and Eastern (Greentown) wants to join.  Blackford was going to leave a couple of years ago and go with Jay County to join another conference and teams left that conference so JC and Blackford backed out.  JC joined the Allen County Conference

The defensive starters have played 1 complete game and that was against Alexandria.  The offense has yet to play a complete game which is concerning.  The final 2 games of the season (Eastbrook and Madison-Grant) will force the starters to play the entire game.  I don't think that this Mississinewa team has peaked yet and really shown what they can do.

Lawrence North was actively trying to run it up against Ben Davis, but Mark Zackery saved them from the list. To be honest, I have no issue given the number of times BD has hung 56 or more on the Wildcats over the years.

My wife is a Southern Wells grad.  I see they are in a 4-way tie for the most azz whoopin's on the victim's list.  Wow.  Kudos to those kids for padding up to practice and play every week.  That has to be a good lesson in perseverance.
