Yes, Valpo has been traditionally the better team, but I think Merrillville, and now Michigan City are 1-2 in DAC. Last years win in regional for MC was what Mason needed to get over the hump. MC has the second best offensive player in Hart and the best QB returning in the conference, and maybe 5A.

As we prepare for the upcoming season, it is clear the numbers crisis in officiating not only still exists, but it’s not getting any better. We need your help to avoid radical steps like moving games off of the traditional Friday night schedule. What can you do to help? Here are some needed steps: (I first have to point out that this is strictly my opinion, based on my 45 yrs. of officiating experience, in which I’ve occupied many, many different roles: from crew member, to Association leader, to state champion crew chief, IHSAA official of the year, and now IHSAA observer.) In no particular order: Treat the officials better. Disagree with a call or no-call. Voice your opinion or ask a question. But do it in a sportsmanlike manner, and then LET IT GO. The assistants, players, and even fans take their cue from you. Be a good host. Make sure the officials have a secure place to dress and hold their pregame. Decent showers afterward. A towel and some cold drinks are greatly appreciated. Be a recruiter. Talk to your seniors, many of whom will never play another down. Get them interested in officiating. It’s a great way to stay in touch with the game and pick up some spending money, too. If you teach PE, talk to those kids, too. Here’s the tough one: give up the coach’s vote as the primary determinant of crew tournament advancement. In a quiet moment, when no one else is around, admit to yourself that coaches lack the three essential elements of a fair and accurate system of evaluation: training, objectivity, and a standardized method of evaluation. I can tell you for a fact that frustration with the tournament process is a significant factor in the inability to retain officials. Rightly or wrongly, the coaches’ vote is viewed as the principal flaw in the system. Coaches are entitled to have a voice in the selection of tournament officials. But making that voice the primary determining factor is killing careers. My $0.02.

Snider returns a QB that has started for 2 years and a very good back in Levell (sp?). Not sure how much returns from the O & D line though. North Side could be very dangerous, nationally rated, big WR. They almost took Snider out last year in first game of the season and I'm expecting another close game to start this season. Never under estimate Dwenger.

Agreed. Highly doubt just USC and UCLA are coming. At this point it seems those running the show are making strategic moves that seem odd on the surface as they strategize a new league. Oklahoma and Texas willingly making their lives harder? USC and UCLA of all teams to the Big Ten? The split is inevitable and at that point it’s just a matter of who gets invited to the super conferences of B1G and SEC. At that point I would expect them to disband into different cohorts that could mix teams from different historical conferences.

I got a feeling a break from the NCAA may be coming.

Mishawaka would be best served saving some of their starters for Merrillville when they play the Snider/Dwenger/North Side winner......presuming Anderson isn't in the conversation.

Both teams had success offensively. GS more on the ground with their quick shifty backs and Retiz more in the air. GS Dline looks really good. Reitz has dynamic play makers if the Oline provides enough time to get them the ball.

Ah yes, the bleacher coaches, with their infinite wisdom. A couple phrases come to mind on this: "Be careful what you wish for" and "Don't bite the hand that feeds you". I'd say the discrepancy between 4A South and 4A North is much greater, but you're right that 5A North is clearly deeper than its southern counterpart. I think your analysis of the South is pretty spot-on. Right now I'd pick DC like everyone else but Harrison played Zionsville tougher last year than any 5A team not named Cathedral (I think they even had the lead at half). Will be interesting to see how everything plays out.

Solid analysis. I’d flip Michigan City and Chesterton if it were me though. One thing is for sure, this class just became a hell of a lot more intriguing and these teams are breathing a sigh of relief with Cathedral out of the way.

I believe MC had a few players missing so it was hard to judge. They definitely had a lot of team speed. Defense seemed a little suspect but way to early to judge.

How was MC ? They were darn good last year and young at key positions.

Snider will take Dwenger out, North Side May surprise everyone. Dwenger lost their QB to North. They look tough. Dwenger will be very small on the OL. Dwenger will be like last year but will be out first round.

NP had a scrimmage with Michigan City yesterday and here my way to early thoughts. I thought the skill players looked very good, it looked as if they’ve picked up some speed from last year. QB appears to have gained some accuracy and was throwing a really nice deep ball. Both running backs look to have gained more muscle and seemed primed to duke it out for game carries. The OL seems to be a work in progress but thought they passed block really well. The defense was fast and swarming to the ball. I think if they get the OL figured out they could duplicate last years success. Again this is a way to early assessment but was surprised with how they looked. Anyone else catch any of your teams scrimmages and have any early thoughts?

Honest question, did coach Cain ever have andrean in the sectional? Will whiting drop back down to 1A?
