The ball was definitely tipped. That means there can’t be DPI on the play, but you can still have targeting. No doubt about the call. In general, I thought untimely penalties were a big problem. They had 4 false starts in the first half — all on 3rd down — which killed 3 drives. An unnecessary roughness penalty that was totally stupid. And the targeting call — on a play resulting in an interception that would have sealed the deal — could easily have cost them a game they dominated in the 2nd half. All world Foskey absolutely whiffed on 2 potential sacks when he came unblocked. Pyne throwing the ball into the ground. Sorry, that’s just not a very good football team right now. My hope is that they found out in the second half that running the ball is a good thing, especially when your QB lacks the arm strength to get the ball downfield.

When you failed to mention any Fort Wayne teams as contenders in 5a, I knew right off the bat that you didn't know much about football in Northeast Indiana. I'm guessing it has something to do with your age, 18-22 if I'm guessing right. But your "it's not close" comment really takes the cake here. I would argue that Luers has the harder schedule and it's not close. Andrean is a great program and it's a compliment to say that 2a starts with them. But to Luers credit, they do have 11 state titles in that class. In 2020 they somehow allowed two scores in the final 1:30 that prevented them from number twelve. I'd also argue that they had the best team in 2a last year, but were the victim of an upset early in the tournament. No offense to the Eastside team that beat them last year, but Luers defeated Carroll, Dwenger, Homestead, and North Side. You won't find a better resume than that for a 2a program going back any number of years.

There would be no reason to decline. Enforcement is 5 yds. from the spot of the pass, and the down counts. So, the ball would go over. As a practical matter, an experienced Referee would not even offer B’s coach a choice. Just mark off 5 from the spot of the pass, give the IG signal, together with loss of down, turn around and point the 1st down the other way, set the chains and away we go.

Stetson Bennett was surrounded by more 5 and 4 stars than Ian Book was. Book was a good college quarterback, just not good enough to win a playoff game with his supporting cast. A guy like Trevor Lawrence could have gotten Kelly his statue.

The last Notre Dame quarterback alumni to win an NFL game was Brady Quinn in 2012. Not saying that matters in College ball, but it's a stat worth noting.

I would not say Book was really good. Was he bad? Not really, but he had talent around him. They had a really good run game. He had Cole Kmet at TE. He had Michael Young, a developing freshman at that time. He also had Claypool, he made him look much better than he was. Seeing him in person, what was more noticeable was that he threw after receivers broke on routes, so they were able to gain separation with the cuts, but the late throws allowed the DB to close far more often than not. On long routes, he could not lead receivers. They had to slow down, waiting for the ball to arrive. For Claypool, if it was near him, he was athletic enough to adjust and catch it. To Gonzo's point, I look at the next level. Even Brady Quinn had Jef Smardgsjgdnkfa to throw to, and struggled at the next level. When I think or see "really good", I think that means they are also good at the next level.

Coaches at too many levels want to run a spread offense even when they don't have spread personnel, it's very frustrating to me.

If B declined, ball would be on the the 40 with 1st and 10 for B ... although I'm not sure why B would decline unless, like you said, they didn't understand that he was getting the ball either way. Not specifically sure of placement in high school, but I believe that, if A's QB is less than 10 yards behind the LOS, then it is 10 yards from the previous spot and loss of down. If A is further back than 10 yards, then it's considered a spot foul and loss of down. One change that did happen in 2022 is that, if QB is outside of the tackles and clears the neutral zone with the throw, it doesn't matter if there is a receiver close by or not, it wouldn't be grounding.
