5A was always going to be the watered down class when they formed 6A. Since the Success Factor was implemented, 5A has been dominated by 4A enrollment schools taking their turns at title runs. Another poster had it right, make 6A the top 32 enrollment schools and 1A the smallest 32 enrollment schools and 5A would look like a much better product top to bottom.

I personally feel that there were many 4A teams that could’ve won 5A. I think to most people, 5A is just a lower tier of 6A. An “extra” 32 teams. I know it is not intended that way nor do I feel it will be like that every year. If I had a say, the most fair way to divide this up is have 6A at 32. And class 1A at 32. Then go through and place 64 (or 62,63) in classes 2,3,4,5A. I feel this would create much more of an equal setting and allows that very small schools to have their class just like the largest 32.

Congrats to Drayk Bowen on being recognized as the best HS LB in the country. An honor for himself, Andrean, and the whole state of Indiana.

So, if I understand what happened, on 3rd down Team A ran it down very close to, but short of, the line to gain. They then lined up for 4th down, and Team B encroached, resulting in a half the distance penalty, but not a 1st down. The linesman mistakenly told the box man to display 1st down on the box, not 4th down. Team A then ran a play into the line which was stopped for no gain, mistakenly thinking it was 1st down when, in reality, it was 4th down. Since, they were still short of the line to gain, the ball went over to Team B. The question seems to be, should/could the officials have done something to correct the fact that Team A was misled as to the correct down? The only rule that directly addresses errors relating to downs provides: “The referee shall correct the number of the next down prior to the ball becoming live after a new series of downs is awarded and prior to the declaration of the end of any period.” This rule does not seem to address the situation presented here. So, what do you do if you’re the Referee here? If I were wearing the white hat here, my thinking would be that I can’t let Team A be disadvantaged in a way that potentially impacts the outcome of the game due to an officiating error if there is any way I can avoid that result. And there is. Rule 1-1-6 is part of the “God Rule,” and provides: “The referee has authority to rule promptly, and in the spirit of good sportsmanship, on any situation not specifically covered in the rules.” I would then put the ball back at the 2 yd. line and replay 4th down.

Start with top 32 enrollment teams in 6A and bottom 32 enrollment teams in 1A. Those classes are now set. Bump the remaining top 32 enrollment teams in classes 1A-4A up a class and you have your new classifications. No clue what the official breakdown per class would be but you get the picture. 2A-5A would all roughly have ~64 teams.

Every time you brag about Cathedral........."4A enrollment schools running away with state titles (New Pal and Cathedral)".................I'm going to kindly remind you that they have zero boundaries. You're blind as a bat if you think they don't have an advantage over their 4a counterparts (and pretty much all of 5a).

You keep playing the small school card with Cathedral. Do we have to keep doing this? Kudos to them for winning where the IHSAA puts them, they are a great program for sure. But c'mon, you and I both know they are not a 4a program. Based on their advantages, I'd call them a 6a program, but I'd settle for 5a. New Pal on the other hand? That's a true smaller school that competes with the big boys. And they can only do that by playing their best athletes on both sides of the ball. But that's what they do and kudos to them for having the endurance to compete that way.

Why so vague?? I mean, kuddos for not just giving the "cookie-cutter" resignation speech/interview (i.e. time with family, done all I could, etc..) - but if you're gonna go the route of throwing Administration under the bus, why not be clear in your reasoning??

Come on man if you can't tell that was a comment in jest and had some sarcasm built into it, I have no help for you. I think everyone on here knows how important Offensive Line play is. That being said there are thing that certain RB's do down field after that first 3-5 yards that are on their own merits. Of course their O-line play is crucial. Hansen and Coyle were of benefit of terrific O-line's so that is moot. Nope probably haven't seen the movie in at least 10 years. Probably won't for awhile either. Unsure how long you've been around the GID, but I have been around long enough to see @The TW on here from some archaic message board iterations (heck even the Horde vs Driven T days), even though he like to disappear and reappear on occasions 🤣. Some things I do know is he is and always has been very honest on these boards, has some coaching experience (heck I me be pulling out the old memory cells but I think at one time at Broad Ripple HS, he will have to tell me if I am going senile), and for safe measure I am pretty sure he knows a thing or two about Offensive Line play. You don't have to take him for his word, but he has no reason to make it up.

Funny how so much shade being thrown at 5a this year when the 5a finals was the best game of the entire weekend. it was not only the most competitive game of the weekend, but it was filled with great plays and execution by both teams. So how did such an atrocious division produce such a competitive, exciting, and well played game?

You can't have a true system because the players age out and you aren't picking them yourself from a talent pool. That is very different than the leagues that use promotion/relegation.

oh jeesh.....now you are resorting to throwing teammates under the bus. It was bad enough when you stated one player carried the team to half of their victories, as that totally diminishes the TEAM. Any RB would tell you his success is dependent on the line in front of him opening holes. This game always had and will always be won on the LOS. And I say that as a former skills player and having a son as a skills player. Serious question....did you ever play the game? I ask, because some of your comments that completely ignore the concept of TEAM absolutely confuse me.

I think New Pal and Roncalli could make a pretty good case that they may have won 5A. Chatard not so much. I'm not sure the Trojans could have finished better than 4th in the SAC let alone win all of 5A. That won't settle well with those in Indy, I'm just telling it like I see it. The rest of the state never even got a chance to see North Side, as the Redskins ran into 5A's #1 ranked team in the sectionals. They actually had the Panthers down 9 late in the third. If I'm a North Side fan, I'm making a case for them being 5A's second best team. I'm also making a case that they could beat any team in 5A on any given night. The state didn't get to see Snider either, whom I still believe was 5A's best team this year. Valpo is being judged by by their three losses and not so much how good they were when they got #9 back. That kid is a beast and truly made a difference in Valpo's run to the state title. Merrillville could also make a claim that they could beat anyone in 5A on any given night. That being said, let's matchup 4A's top 5 with Snider, Valpo, Whiteland, North Side, and Merrillville. This should keep us busy for the next few days during this off season. I know posters are getting bored. Justasportsfan..........to answer your question, 5A is considered weak since Cathedral and New Pal aren't involved. No one made any claims of it being weak when Snider, Valpo, and Merrillville were in 6A and Cathedral and New Pal were winning championships. It's an Indy thing. Since their representation in that class was slim, that's why they foolishly think it's weak.

Temptation thinks he's cracked the code and that football success is all about the socioeconomic status of the schools as measured by free lunches. It was an interesting topic the first couple of times it was brought up but it has been beaten to death.

As a former linemen, I think they should always get the award.

I watched a high school player have loads of interest from Big Ten programs his junior year. The offensive line went bye bye, and so did the Big Ten. Ended up going MAC. Same player was a draft pick his junior year in college. Bye bye went the offensive line and so did any interest from the NFL his senior season. Let's not pretend that the offensive line isn't, by far, the most valuable asset to any offense. But a kid at that position has no chance at Mr. Football and no chance at the Heisman. Those awards are given to the best football player. Apparently offensive linemen aren't considered football players. And that's a "travesty."

Coach Hummer was my 8th Social Studies teacher and what a GREAT one he was as he was also my Freshman Football Coach at Rensselaer in 1967. What a great Teacher and Coach with a wonderful sense of humor. As I moved on to varsity football under Coach Siderwicz Coach Hummer was always there supporting us and pushing on. As Coach Gilbert stated Coach Hummer, Siderwicz, Geesman, Burvan, and Brandenburg had a big impact on the community of Rensselaer and my future in coaching. As I entered coaching Coach Hummer was also a person I could talk with for guidance. My Prayers also go out to him and his family! God Bless.

And PPs don’t have any kids that aren’t D1 prospects. Just because kids participate doesn’t mean they are players. This is an argument that will go on for eternity
