  2. Best thing in the world when we all got glasses. Before Dad got the belt out, we would slide the glasses down our nose a little. After a couple of whacks, we'd shake our heads, glasses would fall off, and mom would yell at dad to stop because we'd break our glasses. Funny story, our middle brother would always do stuff, then lie.....Finally my oldest brother or I would just say we did it, take our ass busting and move on. Oldest brother and I finally called dad out about it a few years back. We're like you knew he was lying, why'd you beat our asses. Dad's response was perfect, he said "I never bothered you guys after you went back to your rooms and Tony was getting his did I?"

  3. We had to cut the willow switches for Mom, then it was the belt when Dad got home. Willow tree died when we were all adults, we blamed Mom because of all the switches we had cut off it. And we all laughed about it.

  5. So using your "best team wins, so don't punish the winning team" logic, why don't we just go back to single class sports? Heck, let's do that for every sport including football. If your team isn't good enough to beat Warren Central football or Carmel basketball or Andrean baseball, then you just need to work harder & get better, right? Having a fraction of their enrollment is just an excuse, so work harder. Not being able to recruit from a large metro area is just an excuse, so work harder. I posted this Pennsylvania link for all of those folks who say "Success Factor is NOT FAIR to my school because we shouldn't have to play against bigger schools to win our 10th state championship". The IHSAA Success Factor is pretty minor compared to Illinois' Private school multiplier or states that don't even allow Private & Public schools to compete for the same title.

  6. This study was published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Neurology. That gives it a lot of credibility. Chronic Traumatic Encephelopathy (CTE) in football has become one of the biggest issues they face after finishing their careers. However, a recent study from JAMA Neurology suggests that former high school football players do not face an enhanced risk. The findings from the study (which took on 3,904 men with an average age of 64.4 years) read as such:The study used data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, with players matched between March 1 and July 1, 2017. Controlled variables included adolescent IQ, family background, and educational level. This included three types of studied subjects: all controls, those who played a noncollision sport, and those who did not play any sport. So for those who attended high school 60 years ago, playing football didn’t expose itself as a major risk factor for later-life cognitive impairment or depression that comes with CTE. Despite the game being quite different today with bigger, faster, and stronger athletes, it still found that the risk today is similar as it was then. The study also stated that, “cognitive and depression outcomes later in life were found to be similar for high school football players and their nonplaying counterparts.” That’s got to be even more comforting knowing that it’s as if they never played at all. For players that have taken their careers to the next level, and the professional level, this isn’t necessarily encouraging. However, there has to be some relief for people who may have questioned what football may have done to their bodies just from playing high school ball. https://www.sbnation.com/2017/7/11/15952184/cte-study-wisconsin-high-school-football

  7. One thing to counter the "private schools have an unfair advantage" is not every private school dominates. It's really only a handful of them. The ultimate private schools (Culver Military Academy and Park Tudor) don't dominate in many sports, and they recruit all over the country. Their emphasis on sports is different than other private schools too. That's why a blanket policy for all private schools (i.e. multiplier) doesn't make sense. I think the Success Factor is the best solution I've seen. It could possibly be tweaked, but in general it works because it applies to everyone equally and doesn't unnecessarily punish private schools that don't perform as well. I agree private schools generally do have an advantage because they have a high percentage of active students in activities including sports. The make-up of the student bodies are very different. But that doesn't mean they will all automatically be better. We also have to accept the fact no system will be perfect and the ultimate goal is competition, teamwork, and goal setting. Generally the players don't care. They just want to play and compete and some will be seeking college scholarships. This really is an adult problem.

  8. In general I think this might be a slightly down year. I always believe teams win upfront. Central graduated all but one lineman. That’s going to be tough to replace. It was nice to be able to watch all the teams today at media day. Good job Courier and Press. My pre season rankings MD Castle Memorial Reitz Bosse Central North Harrison

  10. Not a meme, but it makes me think what it would be like with a full team of my son at his first football game. If I haven't told you the story, I told him just to tackle the kid with the ball if he played defense. First play he tackled the Center before the ball was ever snapped.

  12. SF agrees with the first sentence.......and for the record - SF wouldn't justify racism......but what the President tweeted was not racist IMHO - it was factual. But if you want to justify calling someone a racist, then don't be choosy.....

  13. As my Geno Auriemma remark was not too well received, how about Rodney "why can't we all just get along" King? Just kidding--this is a very slippery slope with no good outcome, or so it seems. I wish everybody a healthy 2019 campaign, and San Dimas High School football indeed does rule...

  14. Eastbrook seems to be able to rebuild every year and shouldn't be counted out of leading the CIC. Mississinewa has some holes to fill after the loss of Skeens. They have a good solid running game and the line is large. I think there are 13 or 14 Seniors this year so they should be the team to beat because of being the 4A school in the CIC. Blackford is going to be right behind Ole Miss and Eastbrook. Coach Sehy has the Bruins believing in his system and have made huge improvements in a very short time. MG numbers are still questionable and being a 1A school numbers will be an issue. MG will have a very tough regular season and may have a shot at a very good postseason. Elwood and Frankton well these two still have some work. Seems like Elwood can't keep a coach more than a couple of years. Frankton is still waiting to run the Statue of Liberty a lot. Alexandria could be the team that challenges Blackford for the 3rd spot in the conference. Oak Hill may be the spoiler this year but they are also rebuilding still. Should be a good season and could this be the year that the CIC has 4 teams go past Sectional?

  15. So you just let them play and whoever is the best team is crowned the State Champion? Oh my gosh, what a concept? We should allow that same concept for the other class levels.

  18. Eastbrook and Ole Miss will be the teams to beat, Blackford wont be to far behind. I think Ole Miss edges Eastbrook by a little, Campbell boys are VERY good. Eastbrook losses a lot of starters from last season. Guys that have been starting since there sophomore year. Its going to be tough replacing guys like Kirby, Dalton, and Hale but Adamson and his staff always seem to find a way to do it. Bragg had a very good game a state last year so it will be fun to see what he can do this year.

  20. I was struck with a switch multiple times as a child for certain transgressions, and probably deserved it. I was even paddled twice during my stint at the local government elementary school. Would you like to report my parents and the teachers/administrators of the school to the proper authorities?

  21. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/otilliasteadman/baltimore-residents-trumps-racist-tweets Baltimore residents are defending the city a day after President Trump went on another racist tirade calling the city “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.” If racist Elijah Cummings would focus more of his energy on helping the good people of his district, and Baltimore itself, perhaps progress could be made in fixing the mess that he has helped to create over many years of incompetent leadership. His radical “oversight” is a joke! A "racist tirade"? Bernie was ignored a few short years ago...... https://www.dailywire.com/news/49995/watch-sen-bernie-sanders-trashed-baltimore-years-frank-camp The Washington Examiner dug up a tweet from 2016 in which Sanders wrote: "Residents of Baltimore’s poorest boroughs have lifespans shorter than people living under dictatorship in North Korea. That is a disgrace." In February, USA Today published a list of the "25 Most Dangerous Cities in America," which was complied using data from the FBI’s 2017 Uniform Crime Report. Baltimore ranked as the third most dangerous city in terms of "murder ... non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault." Only Detroit and St. Louis ranked higher in those combined categories. Additionally, as The Daily Wire has previously noted, pest control company Orkin ranked Baltimore as the ninth "rattiest city" in the country in 2018. The city ranked number eight in 2017, number six in 2016, and number nine in 2014. Before castigating the president regarding his tweets, Sen. Sanders would do well to remember the statistics, as well as his own words from just four years ago. Maybe Baltimore ought to wake up here...... When both Bernie AND the President carry about the same message......

  22. So.....What ever Trump says, even when it's factual, it's just racist then......Even the (former) Mayor was shocked..... BUT - Because Cummings is black, the President can't even point out what everyone around Baltimore knows......

  24. Somebody has to win every year and the team who wins should not be punished. No matter what the system is, there will be a few teams that rises to the top and everyone will want that team pushed out so their own team can win. These rules have never been about fairness They are about “my team winning instead of yours” Some school are football school. Some are baseball. Some are basketball. Somebody has to win. That’s just the way life is. Having said that, A 1 class level bump is reasonable but that should be the maximum bump. What I find strange is nobody seems to care that the same 4 teams win the 6A class level every year. Being great is only allowable if you are in 6A?. Or maybe it’s because the schools complaining about the success of others dont have to worry about moving to 6A yet so “fairness” in 6 A is not a concern to them right now. (Which proves they don’t really care about fairness to begin with).
