  1. All it’s going to take for the NCAA to fold, is for two of the P5 decide to start their in BB tournament. Call me a romantic, I will never apologize for being a supporter of education based sports. Granted big time FB and MBK are a far cry from that. But let’s look at college sports as a whole. March Madness pays the tab for everything. When the NCAA loses their MBK tournament so long to the NCAA LAX, wrestling, WBK, SB, BB, VB championships in D1, D2, and D3. The vast majority of college athletes aren’t one and done and skipping classes come spring semester. How many of those kids don’t even get a college education were it not for athletics? NCAA is gone, nothing more than a pro minor league. I see big changes looming on the horizon. If you don’t think it’s coming to a HS near you, you need to get your head out of the sand.

  2. I’m out of reactions… but that made me spit out my drink. This is the content I am here for! 🤣 That form reminds me of the episode of Curb your Enthusiasm where Larry David stops a baptism because he thinks it’s an attempted drowning.

  3. Now that I think about it. Catholic schools are at a disadvantage. The Protestant practice of adult baptism by immersion would teach MUCH better tackling form than the Catholic sacrament.

  5. Texting some friends this evening, and the convo is about what will happen to college sports going forward. Saban has been a harsh critic of the NIL money and transfer portal. The future picture may have been a driving force for him to step down. Is the current path sustainable? If it is not sustainable, how long will it last before it falls apart? What are the unintended consequences? How long will the NCAA survive? Does it happen at the expense of the non revenue sports? Anyone here excited about the direction college sports is heading? What is the impact going to be on HS sports? I am not confident at all that this is sustainable. I think what Saban sees with the portal is that coaches will have to recruit every scholarship player every year. I have mentioned before, programs like IU and other non competitive programs in the big conferences will just be conduits for programs that do compete. If a program misses the top 12 in football for a couple years, how difficult does recruiting become? I think the NCAA or some remnant of it can remain to govern D2 and D3 sports and a handful of DI sports like baseball and hockey. I pick those two because the minor league system for both is well developed and many of the athletes playing those sports are really there to get degrees first. I don't see NIL money impacting those sports much at all, even though they do generate some revenue for schools, and their post season playoffs are pretty popular. If it does impact the non revenue sports, and I think it will, at what point does Title IX become a factor? The money generated by football and basketball in the past will now go to NIL money instead of sustaining other programs. My guess is it will quickly fall apart; something like less than 10 years. Maybe some level of nostalgia will remain; teams will maintain (or pay rights fees to keep) the name of the schools on their uniforms and playing in the college stadiums while being independent from the schools themselves. There are already a number of players in college basketball that may be registered for classes this semester, but are not going to be attending. If I remember right, the Kentucky teams that last won titles had the starting 5 not attending 2nd semester classes. Maybe they were not the first to do that, but it was notable since UK went back to back with 2 completely different starting lineups. Other thoughts?

  9. The irony is the "tyipcal" Bears fan who would argue about a roof is the person who will tell you "Bear Weather" gives them an advantage. Yet, they never win big games in "Bear Weather." Whether it's Arlington Heights or somewhere South of Soldier Field near the old McCormick Place, I think they'll go with a roof. They're going to want a Super Bowl and Final 4's. I know a Super Bowl worked in Indy and NYC, but on the shores of Lake Michigan in the middle of winter without a roof? No shot.

  10. I'll eat the crow on this if I'm wrong, but I think Darnell Mooney could be a stud in certain offenses. I will not be surprised if Kansas City takes a flier on him Justin Fields is not a victim. Yes, he's had to deal with multiple OC's and a crappy OL. But, every single national or local analyst (most with NFL experience) I listen to on Chicago radio talks about how many open WR's he misses on the All 22 footage because he either doesn't see them or holds onto the ball too long. If this crap continues with another QB Coach or OC then the Bears missed out on CJ Stroud AND whomever they could have taken this year. I like Justin. He has a lot of Elite phyiscal attributes. I want him to succeed and hope he succeeds. As expected Poles was non commital about Fields' future in the presser on Tuesday. He said he's collecting data on all paths the Bears could go with the #1 pick and will ride it out until April. He seamed a little irritated by the reporter who kept pressing on him on why he passed on Stroud. Anyone hear Warren's presser from that day? He does not sound like someone committing to building a new stadium in Arlington Heights. Seems more interested in doing it in Chicago. Perhaps buying Arlington Race Track could also turn into a real estate investment for the Bears if they can use it to convinve the City to play ball with them on a new downtown stadium.

  11. As @US31 stated - very common. I think Freshman schedules have since changed these days, but back when I played, I swear it went Frosh game Thursday night, Varsity game Friday night, JV game Saturday morning against the same team. And I'm pretty sure I remember playing Concord as a Freshman, our season being completed, but then practicing an extra week with the Varsity team the week they played their sectional game. However, I think only a few freshman actually dressed for the game (I did not as I remember sitting in the stands watching the game).

  12. you can thank the fine folks asleep at the wheel downtown Indianapolis I truly think the suits at the NCAA thought that the schools of the P5 would still just keep the upholding traditions of EDUCATION first athletics.... HA freaking HA Truly some real ignorant stuff there. Day late and a $ short they say with this mess. and once again, the all mighty Dollar rules (or ruins, depending on your stance) the day

  13. Regarding relegation and promotion, the model you reference from the EPL is a professional league. Where would a team be relegated to? FBS to FCS? FCS to Div II? Power 5 to a mid-major conference? Such a model would destroy conferences and the conferences are for sports beyond football. Curious as to your thoughts. Regarding the teams that are currently relevant...doesn't that in many cases change over time? How many years prior had Georgia won a national championship prior to them winning a couple of years ago? Alabama was on a drought before hiring Saban. Washington hadn't been at this level in a long time before DeBoar. No bowl games? So mid-majors are just out of luck? I agree with you about NIL....or at least what it has evolved to. I though NIL was to compensate athletes for using their name, image and likeness. Somehow, its ran to upfront $$ like a contract, regardless if the institution uses their name, image and likeness. To me, its went way beyond what we were all sold about NIL.

  14. The problem with fields is financial there is no precedent of someone who has played poorly as him getting extended, baker mayfield won a playoff game and still got traded. Daniel jones was a one year wonder and got 40 mil a year. In fields defense the bears number 2 receiver wouldn’t start on any other team and o line has had some rough patches.

  15. Good topic. Here are some thoughts: 1. I believe we are headed to a similar format as England soccer, which uses relegation to move teams up and down. The haves and have nots with NIL money playing a huge factor will only make the separation worse 2. I believe 20-30 teams are now relevant at the highest level, most of which are either in the Big 10 or SEC. Who wants to see Indiana vs Ohio State, Vanderbilt vs. Georgia, etc… 3. I am of the belief now that the bowl games need to go away other than the 12 teams that qualify to play for a national title. So many players are opting out of playing in a meaningless bowl game, prime example is the Georgia 63-3 shellacking of Florida State. There were other bowl games that were affected as well 4. I believe the current system will fall apart within 5 years and who knows what will occur going forward. NIL payments are the final coffin in our current system

  17. It's actually 6 of 7 (NFL only has 7 officials on the field). The one not assigned this week was the LJ. That doesn't mean he won't be assigned next week though. 4 of the 6 assigned are alternates this week which means they could get another assignment later in the playoffs as well. All this really proves is Schefter's speculation of a playoff ban the crew didn't actually happen.

  18. This is very common. And keep in mind, because of IHSAA rules, even though they stay out for practice...they may not be able to dress for the games. If you have a deep playoff run this can give your Frosh almost an extra half season of practice.

  20. When has Pike ever been a thought in Indiana high school football, maybe back in the 40's & 50's ??

  21. What does being ranked in the National Top 100 have to do with a dynasty? Not sure how I'm being dense. Whiteshoes is ONLY qualifying teams that have made his Top 100. Calling Fishers, LC, and Pike dynasties is laughable. These ranking are nothing more than a measuring stick for teams that have made the Top 100 in the past. Congratulations on making the Top 100 once, but you've dominated nothing over a period of time. These schools aren't dynasties, not even a little bit. Luers, LCC, Chatard, and Lutheran ARE dynasties because they dominated their respective class. This has nothing to do with Luers ability to beat Fishers in a head to head matchup. It has everything to do with dominating your competition in the class in which you compete. Pike for f**** sake? Am I on candid camera?

  22. Fishers, Pike, Reitz, New Pal, Penn, and LC are consistent at the national level? I must be missing something. I understand what he's done. He's using ONLY the national poll, it's just not a good measuring stick for a dynasty. A dynasty can only be measured by a program's dominance in the tournament that they play. For instance: Three or four straight championships. Making the National Top 100 one time in the past 16 years doesn't qualify you as a dynasty. When talking dynasties in Indiana, I think you have to start with Warren Central, Luers, LCC, and Center Grove. There are others, those just come to mind first.

  23. I guess I'm confused as to what a dynasty is. I just don't see Pike or Fishers as dynasties. I see Luers, Lutheran, LCC, and Chatard as dynasties, but that's just me.

  24. Agreed. I’m curious about the timeframe as well. Fishers has only been a school for 15 years or so. Pretty short lifespan to be considered dynastic over a school like Ev Reitz.

  25. I have decided to change the format in which I present the dynasty rankings at the end of this season. In prior years, I would list all teams that have been included in my Top 100 since 2007. However, the list has grown so large that it has become a difficult read. Therefore, starting this season I am only going to list the Top 100 and will follow that up with state listings. Again, schools compile points by being ranked in the final poll each season. Twenty-five points are awarded just for being in the final poll and points are awarded for a school’s final position in the poll. For instance, a school finishing on the top of the final poll will receive 125 points, a school finishing at the bottom of the poll will receive 26 points. Here is the Top 100 Dynasty Ranking at the conclusion of the 2023 season. Each school is listed by its ranking, last seasons ranking and its total points. I have also included a listing of all Indiana schools that are in the compilation. 1. Las Vegas (NV) Bishop Gorman (2) 1467 2. Fort Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas (3) 1441 3.
