Hoosier High School Football - Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down : Week 2

Guest DT

Recommended Posts

Thumbs Up
Lake Central - Very impressive 42-0 romp over Hammond Morton. LC first year Coach Richard Good did a tremendous job building up the Calumet program. The DAC is just not the same when its biggest school is down. The Indians are now 2-0 with shutout wins over Munster and Morton. Could not have asked for a better start for LC. A strong Lake central football program is great for The Region, for the Duneland Conference and for Northern Indiana.

Thumbs Up
Bloomington North and Bloomington South
Both schools are off to great starts. South clearly was expected to improve dramatically with the arrival of the McCullough brothers and the Panthers have delivered, starting 2-0 and opening Conference Indiana play this week against Terre haute North. BN is the HHF Southern Indiana Big School Team of the Week following their rout over BNL. These two collide in week 4 in what might be the biggest matchup between the two schools in decades.

Thumbs Up
Shelbyville - Congratulations go out to the Golden Bears as they break their 26 game losing streak with a win over Richmond. What has happened to Richmond football? Oh my? Brian Glesing had a great run at Floyd Central, and after bouncing around for a few years at Jeffersonville and Paoli, Coach Glesing may have found a new long term home at Shelbyville. The Golden Bears have a big challenge this week as they host HHC foe Delta.

Thumbs Up
Perry Meridian - similar to Shelbyville, its been a long dark road for the PM football program. After a very competitive week 1 loss to Franklin Central, the falcons rolled over rival Southport 42-7 on Friday, only the schools 5th win in its last 43 games. Brett Cooper is in his 2nd season at PM and will be looking to keep the momentum moving forward this week at home against Mid State rival Franklin.

Thumbs Up
Noblesville - Things are looking up for the Millers. Dave Sharpe has installed his Power - Smashmouth offense and he has the horses to make it work . NHS is 2-0, but the real work begins this week as Hoosier Crossroads Conference play begins and the 2-0 Fishers Tigers come to town to open league play. This will be a great test for both teams. Noblesville has been on the losing end of many close games over the past several years. Does this team know how to win at crunch time? We will start to learn that about these Millers this week.
Check back in for more soon!

Thumbs Up
Lawrence Central - After losing 35-7 last week at Hamilton Southeastern, things looked might dreary for the LC Bears. What a difference a week can make. Lawrence Central came rumbling back from the brink and put a 49-21 whupping on a very solid Lafayette Jefferson team that had high expectations for a victory. This was a huge win for LC, and maybe a program changer as the team looks to turn the corner and fight its way out of the MIC basement. The Bears will travel across the township to Lawrence North this week for the annual rivalry game, and a chance to earn an elusive conference victory .

Thumbs Up
John Glenn - The Falcons are 2-0 and building some momentum as 5th Head Coach Austin Foust looks for his first winning season. This program start to get some notice last fall, and the Falcons have some nice size and skill this year and will be a factor in the NIC small school division. Glenn is at St Joe this Friday.

Thumbs Up
Brebeuf - It cant get much better than back to back season opening wins over Chatard and New Pal. Brebeuf is the real deal. With Ritter, Guerin and Culver up the next 3 weeks, the Braves should be undefeated heading into a showdown matchup with Roncalli in week 6. Second year Head Coach Matt Geske is getting the job done at Brebeuf!

Thumbs Up
Gibson Southern - The Titans demolished New Albany 63-24, and likely are on track to run the table and set some scoring records along the way. GS has firmly established itself as the 3A odds on favorite to win the state championship.

Thumbs Down
Decatur Central - You cant turn the ball over the first three times you touch it, make incredibly poor play calling and personnel decisions, and allow your kids to commit flagrant personal fouls, and still expect to compete in a game against a team like Center Grove. That's exactly what Decatur Central brought to the table Friday night, and they got curb stomped 56-7 by the top ranked Trojans. What a waste of $10 of pay per view. LOL At least it went to a good cause. This one was over 5 minutes into the first quarter.

Thumbs Down
Indianapolis North Central - It doesn't take much to derail a programs hard fought momentum, but that seems to be the case at North Central. The Panthers cant seem to get out of their own way. Like many other PP coaches before him, perhaps long time LCC Coach Kevin O'Shea is hitting that proverbial brick wall as he tries to transform a public school program. The Panthers are making The MIC look bad against The HCC, with two ugly losses to Fishers and HSE to open the season. Not sure NC has the gas in the tank to get this fixed this season. And when does patience start to run out?

Thumbs Down
Warsaw - As much as I like what Bart Curtis is doing at Warsaw, you have to grab the fleeting high profile opportunities as they are presented to you and make the most out of them. Everyone and their brother has been downplaying the opening win over Dublin Coffman doe to DC's Covid restrictions and the long bus ride from Columbus. Whatever it was, Phil Mason's MC Wolves exposed the Tiger defense and ran wild all night. Warsaw needs to regroup, starting this week with Plymouth.

Thumbs Down
Avon - Does this program still teach defense? Seems like Avon is involved in more high scoring big school games than most any other school in the state. Avon produces great athletes, but they generally wind up playing offense. The HCC is going through an internal metamorphosis. Several programs are rising, so others must be falling. Avon will be an underdog the next two weeks against HSE and Brownsburg, and could very well be looking at 0-4 and a very long and dreary back half of the schedule.

Thumbs Down
Vincennes Lincoln - The Alices are not looking like an SIAC team after the first two weeks of the regular season. After losing to Bosse to open up, Lincoln was crushed by Reitz 41-0 on Friday, and is looking at a 3 week gauntlet of Mater Dei, Central and castle just ahead. This program is struggling and needs bigger, stronger and faster players to compete in the SIAC. The school lobbied hard for the invite, now its time to perform and show you belong.

Thumbs Down
Knox - Shock was the word used when Russ Radtke pulled a last minute bailout on Portage and jumped ship to take the job at Knox. Regardless of the reasons for the move, expectations for the Redskins were sky high. Reality? Knox is 6-7 under Radtke, and 0-2 to start the 2021 season after losing at Rochester 12-7. The only gimme remaining on he schedule for Knox is week 9 against Caston. . Everything else is up for grabs. Are the natives getting restless?

Thumbs Down
Plymouth - Are the Rockies/Pilgrims?? still considered a top tier power in the NLC? Why does everybody in the NLC reserve their animosity for the Plymouth program? What did the Rockies/Pilgrims do to deserve all this rage and angst? Whatever is going on, this program seems to be in a funk. Still highly respected. But not feared. The Rockies/Pilgrims have been smoked by east Noble and Kokomo in non conference play, and travel to Warsaw to open up NLC action this week. Sounds like a pretty big game for both schools.

Thumbs Down
Hammond Morton - Conventional wisdom said that the new Hammond Central would be the basketball school, and Morton would be the football school in the post consolidation world following the closures of Gavit and Clark. Maybe somebody forgot to tell Governor Coach Mac Mishler about that arrangement, because Morton looks nothing like a football magnet after the first two weeks of the season, which include losses to Portage and Lake Central. The Red and Blue Indians respectively are programs that Morton would handle with ease in the past. Something is amiss. I'm clueless.

I’m still skeptical about LC. They’ve beaten a downright atrocious Munster team (a game which was 0-0 at half) and a bad Morton team without their best player and only offensive threat. We’ll see how the blue Indians fair in DAC play. As for the Governors, I’ll repeat what I said all off season: you can’t combine a mediocre team with a bad team and expect to have a good team after. Their losses to DAC bottom feeders have proven this true. Feel bad for the kids having to play a schedule that’s clearly out of their league. Will they get to 4 wins? I’m not sure.

Nice analysis as always @DT…

A couple of honorary additions:

Thumbs Up:

HSE and Fishers:  many wrote them off as legitimate programs after a rough 2020

Chatard - a program obviously not built upon moral victories but love how they came out and punched Warren in the mouth early

Carroll (FW) - could have packed their bags after the week 1 loss to Luers but got off the mat and beat Snider

Edinburgh - doing something to another team that used to be done to them on a regular basis

Mooresville - not much to brag about in BEATING Danville but HOW they beat Danville was eye opening to me

Thumbs Down:

Penn - first Valpo (little shame) and now LaPorte?  Making matters worse, they are getting on a bus Friday night into a buzzsaw.  6 hours on a bus for a contest that will be over in less than 6 minutes.

Pike - LC seems to have figured something out but the same can’t be said for the Red Devils.  Shut out at home and only 10 points in two weeks?

Lafayette Jeff - did not see this one coming, whoa

Southport - Yikes.  When did the transition to the other township school take place?  Snapped a 12 game winning streak over the Falcons.

Plainfield - I just don’t get it.  Growing suburban population, all of the resources to compete and loses to a 3A (albeit a damn good one) school within the same county borders

Six hours? Who's driving that thing?

Huge thumbs up for Carroll. They beat a pretty good football team.

31 is not the parking lot that it used to be (especially around the Kokomo area) but Mishawaka to 48th and Arlington on a bus will be just short of 3 hours each direction.

Thumbs Down - Columbus East… they have been out scored 56-7 in their 1st 2 games (Whiteland and Columbus North). Not a good start for the Olympians

Bob Gaddis was to CE as was Don Howell to Hobart, Jerry Brewer to Jasper, Im giving East some breathing room as there will be a transition period.

Gaddis leaving and 32 seniors graduated last year ( the biggest graduating class for Columbus East since this streak started in 2004) Hoping they improve this year and next year they are pretty good.

I agree.  Beating Munster and Morton moves the needle very little as the Tribe does that every season.  I suggest two things: beef up the non-con slate and go .500 in league, then we’ll talk or at least gesture.

Maybe this belongs under the Hoosier Hills Conference post, but if not the Olympians winning the HHC, then who would? You have obviously been really critical of the Olympians and for good reason, but I have trouble coming up with a team that will come out on top in that conference if it's not East.

I think they will win the conference, they opened up against 2 teams that are much better than anyone else in the HHC.. BUT, the HHC is probably the worst football conference in Indiana between 4A-6A. It’s just a weird feeling seeing East at 0-2 and being outscored the way they have.

Let’s see:

Valpo?  No.

Merrillville?  No.

Crown Point?  Probably not.

Chesterton?  Doubtful.

Michigan City?  Trending no.

LaPorte?  Possibly.

Portage?  Good as any.

The DAC is finally getting stronger as a whole, but LC still has a long way to go.

The Hoosier Hills Conference is definitely down this season, but I think the worst football conference in Indiana between 4A-6A is the North Central Conference.

Thumbs Up

Ben Davis's J'uan Swanson who went 22 for 27 and 423 yards with 4 TDs and 1 INT in this game. His 423 broke Kyle Castner's 2014 school record of 377 yards passing in a game.

Damn!  Impressive.  Thought that record might be held by Mr. Banks.

Related note:  Any truth to the rumor that Avon’s two most popular defensive packages are named “the matador” and the “screen door?”

I don't want to cut down Avon as my father was a former head football coach there and played with Coach Bless' father at UIndy, but the Orioles had a very tough night defensively. Started out as a chippy shootout, but I was very impressed at how Ben Davis adjusted. Crishon McCray is the real deal Holyfield though. If they can get the defense figured out, they're going to be a tough team to beat. They're going to score 30 in a lot of games. If they can keep the other team under that, they're going to be much better.

Also, Banks and Reese Taylor get a lot of attention as great BD quarterbacks, but Castner is probably #3 on that all-time list at BD. Kyle was smart, accurate, and had an arsenal of weapons to throw to.

Yeah, the bypass around the (original) bypass is pretty nice.

Took 31 up to Culver a few weeks ago. It was a train wreck between 32 and Tipton, one lane both northbound and southbound. And it was one lane up around Rochester. Not sure if that is still the case but I'm guessing 3 hours from Penn to Arlington sounds about right.

I assume they are making US31 three lanes in both directions all the way to Kokomo, along with making it "restricted access", aka an interstate with proper exit/entry lanes.  And I also guess all the new exits/overpasses will be like that triple-roundabout aberration at US31 & SR28.

Lake Central: Agree with the Andrean guy. Jury is still out. Munster and Morton are soft. I do think Good has the bones to turn Lake Central around.

Noblesville: Very young team too. They play a lot of Sophomores and Juniors. The O-Line destroyed Mt. Vernon and THS. Looking forward to seeing how they fair against Fishers. The Millers play 7 OL in their Power Offense at the following sizes: 5'10 225 Sr, 5'11 315 Jr, 6'3 235 Sr, 6'3 325 Sr, 6'4 315 Jr, 6'6 285 Jr, 6'7 240 So.

Lawrence Central: I have a feeling this is more of a case of Lafayette Jeff being way down. We shall see on Friday against LN.

North Central: I am surprised they have been trending downwards. I would imagine coaching in blue blooded Washington Township can't be easy. My perception, which is often wrong, would be that Towship sends a lot of talent to Brebeuf, Chatard, and Cathedral.

Warsaw: 2 years in a row that City has taken them to the woodshed. Coffman was routed by Division 2 Cincinnati Turpin last weekend. Maybe the Rocks just aren't that good this year.

Knox: Radtke doesn't seem like the type who can adjust to mediocrity. I wouldn't be surprised if he went shopping for a new gig even though he's supposedly happy to be coaching back in rural Indiana.

Hammond Morton: The 'Govs caught lightning in the bottle with Roydon Richards. They made their own bed when they forced him to resign even after the Department of Child Services cleared him of any wrong doing. He's rebounded nicely as Mason's DC in City. Meanwhile, Morton is cycling through coaches who can't replicate Roydon's success.

Addition: Penn: Yikes. Just when you think the Kingsmen have hit rock bottom they go out and lose to LaPorte. The Slicers will be lucky to go .500 in an average Duneland Conference. This is the type of game that Penn used to win just by showing up. I wonder if Cathedral is now regretting putting Morton and Penn on their schedule. Both games should have Cathedral going to the bench by mid 2nd Quarter.

31 southbound won't slow them up unless they come through at 7am. If they're smart, they'll take Keystone to 56th and bypass I465-that is not fun on Friday afternoon.

They may also have an e-learning day scheduled that day so they can leave early. Hamilton Heights does, bus leaves for Rensselaer before 4. Our students still have class assignments that day, they just won't be at the school.
