Yes they would have. Coyle great kid and had a terrific season. I would bet money there are 3 other RB's behind him that know Coach Moore's Wing T system and can run it in their sleep (they've only been doing it since the 2nd or 3rd grade). Wheat went down Coyle stepped up. Thomeson was moved from defense to offense. Regardless of any of that Hansen still had 1,008 more rushing yards in 1 less game (and yes the dogs were called off in games at Roncalli too just like CG) and 13 more TD's. Both were even in receiving yards as well. ANyone that says stats don't matter for a position award is fooling themselves While some CG fans were very upset Russ Yeast did not win Mr. Football over Hunter Johnson, that was less of a travesty than Luke Hansen not being the RB award and it isn't even to the Mr. Football award. When talking schedule strength do NOT use Sagarin as Sagarin does not take Out of State opponents into consideration (good or bad). If you want to debate Strength of Schedule you should look at Calpreps (which takes all opponents into consideration). Roncalli's SOS was 20.5 and Center Grove's was 36.8 (lower the number better the SOS) Roncalli's opponents were 108-62 Center Grove's were 83-74. (Shortridge, Attucks, and Southport definitely brought down Roncalli's SOS both teams had no choice in who they played especially in the Tournament). It can be spun however anyone wants but this was one of the biggest travesty moments for the position awards. I take nothing away from Coyle as he is a good kid and good football player, but he wasn't better than Hansen this year. Yes the CG fans would be super upset if the roles were reversed and that was evident from the year Russ Yeast didn't win it over Hunter Johnson (which was even less of a travesty because Yeast at least got the position award).

Coach Hummer was my freshman coach in 1969 at Rensselaer Central. Coach Siderwitz, Coach Geisman and Coach Hummer all influenced the direction I chose. Coach Hummer was an outstanding classroom teacher and an inspirational coach on the gridiron. I remember his wit and smile as if it were yesterday. My prayers go out for him and to his family! Please keep retired coach Dale Hummer in your thoughts and prayers. He’s battling the big C and the outlook isn’t looking good. His head coaching career started at Fountain Central in 1973. He led the Mustangs to back to back undefeated seasons in 75 and 76 and playoff spots. In 1978 FC was 1A runner up to Lawrenceburg. He left Fountain Central after the 1980-81 school year and went to Bloomington South. He didn’t have the success there that was expected and from what I remember didn’t have much support for the administration. He ended up at Dekalb and led them to a state title. Coach Hummer was responsible for launching the coaching careers for several successful coaches including, Gene Jellybean Rowe, Rick Malone, Brian Moore and one of the best in Myron Mo Moiarity. I’m sure there’s many more. Thanks everyone ✌️💙

Congrats to Drayk Bowen on being recognized as the best HS LB in the country. An honor for himself, Andrean, and the whole state of Indiana.

I watched a high school player have loads of interest from Big Ten programs his junior year. The offensive line went bye bye, and so did the Big Ten. Ended up going MAC. Same player was a draft pick his junior year in college. Bye bye went the offensive line and so did any interest from the NFL his senior season. Let's not pretend that the offensive line isn't, by far, the most valuable asset to any offense. But a kid at that position has no chance at Mr. Football and no chance at the Heisman. Those awards are given to the best football player. Apparently offensive linemen aren't considered football players. And that's a "travesty."

The decision actually did come down to factors beyond their ability at running back. Coyle’s prowess as a three-sport athlete was taken into consideration. The outcomes of the teams factored into play, as well. Once that bridge has been crossed, you have to count the fact that even though Hansen only played defense against their top tier opponents (and then only part time), he still led the team in sacks and TFL. You also have to give him credit for being on the podium at the state wrestling finals, a sport where you are completely reliant on yourself and only yourself for success. But Roncalli had no representation in the room or anyone that truly cared to advocate for Luke. Coyle had the head coach of the best team in the state to carry his mail. The system is ridiculous. To be clear, I have nothing against Coyle. He had a great year, and I hope he goes on to do amazing things in college.

I have no idea what rules were in place with Yeast was a senior. He did win the RB position award. Was it required to be Mr. Football? You tell me.... Love your passion....well, kind of.... You are an emotional fella...will give you that.....

Question for you? Does every Heisman winning RB always lead the nation in rushing and TD's? Same for the Doak Walker award? Does every Heisman winning QB always lead the nation in passing yardage, passing TD's, etc.? Same for the Davey O'Brien award? Is it truly only about pure stats? If it were, it would make it very simple and it would take any guess out of the award. We could throw out different levels of competition, impact to the team, etc. Just stats....nothing else. Sounds a tad boring and also not an accurate assessment of the best player at the position...but to each his own. I am going to say this again...I think they are both terrific players that had terrific years. I have been disappointed before when it comes to awards. As I continue to age, I realize that awards don't define anyone and I bet both young men would give them up in a New York minute to wear that blue medal around their neck. Congratulations to both young men....they are both more than worthy of the award.

I didn't state that Coyle replaced Wheat, I said he stepped up taking a bulk of the load. I also stated Thomeson was moved from defense to offense. Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Football are 2 different awards by two different entities and they are not one in the same. The difference is Yeast was at least voted as a position award winner and Hansen was not. Directly why I say it is a travesty. He (Hansen will not even have the opportunity to be up for Mr. Football because he was not a position award winner. It is a joke and he 100% had the statistics at RB to win the RB position award.

Bo Barzilauskas was a much different level player who should have been in NFL if not for burnout. Would have been D line, likely. His dad, Carl, was a high draft pick (OL) coming out of IU in early 70's (played for John Pont). Badass indeed.

Coyle did not replace Wheat. They would have been in the backfield together.

Sounds like my type of guy! Hopefully, the roots he and his family of developed in West Lafayette are now stronger than the appeal of going back to Louisville.

When a kicker has a better chance at winning Mr. Football over someone like Hansen or Tibbs it might be time to start re-thinking the award. Personally, I think the award should be open to all grades, not limited to seniors. I also don't have a problem recognizing the best player in each class either.

IMO, the real travesty is Jaron Tibbs not being named as Mr. Football Wide Receiver. He was the best wide receiver in the state of Indiana! Oh well, maybe he'll be named Mr. Football.

Everyone has their own opinion. Both are good backs. Both on good teams. Coaches voted. I’ll trust them. for the record, CG did not play Shortridge, Attucks, or Southport. I also wish Roncalli would still play CG. Would still be an awesome environment and game.

Correct. Did that last week when I sparred with @Coach Nowlin. Look, plenty of guys have rushed for 2500+ yards (don’t have the numbers in front of me) and not won the award but 3100 yards on a 12-2 team that played a top 20 schedule and to not even win your POSITION award is unheard of. There has to be more to the story.

Try to rise above the level of a middle schooler. I have no narrative other than pointing out the fallacies of your takes. It is a position award. The position is running back.

He has the quickest release of any QB I’ve seen, other than The GOAT. I guess that’s what comes from leading the league in getting sacked for a couple of seasons.

Without Hansen Roncalli doesn’t win a state title this year. Better?

Coach Hummer was my 8th Social Studies teacher and what a GREAT one he was as he was also my Freshman Football Coach at Rensselaer in 1967. What a great Teacher and Coach with a wonderful sense of humor. As I moved on to varsity football under Coach Siderwicz Coach Hummer was always there supporting us and pushing on. As Coach Gilbert stated Coach Hummer, Siderwicz, Geesman, Burvan, and Brandenburg had a big impact on the community of Rensselaer and my future in coaching. As I entered coaching Coach Hummer was also a person I could talk with for guidance. My Prayers also go out to him and his family! God Bless.

i think 3 teams in the 4a south would beat whiteland and valpo 10 times out of 10, and one team in the 4a south would beat them at least 6 times out of 10. I would also pick chatard to win 5a I would not pick new prairie over them, so theres that I guess?

Coyle doesn't have the highest star rating on the team.
