Your question is, of course, hypothetical, since such a student would never want to go to a leftist, elitist, effete academy of pinheadedry such as Harvard. He'd apply to a solid conservative institution in the Midwest, like U of C, or Hillsdale, or go to one of the wellspring academies for renowned libertarian thinkers, such as Indiana State.3 points

Kind of like hiring a community organizer from the streets of Chicago to run the country. Whoops! did I just say that? Sorry. Banish me to the OOB turf.3 points

I wonder how many people posting actually know the coach personally? To make a broad sweeping statement expressing concern about a MS coach being hired is not fair. It is apparent from a coouple of posters that know him that he is qualified for this position. Best of luck to the coach and the Gavit program.2 points

Well, his 3rd cousin who wrestled for Lebanon was called The Vanilla Gorilla, but we're not gonna use that one............. I was gonna ask for suggestions, but that would probably be scary. His mom came up with Chocolate Thunda. Maybe he's found his calling?2 points

Sadly, I would have to agree with that assessment in regards to football over the last decade. Boonville and VL have seen somewhat of a resurgence the past two seasons, but neither have a sectional title in that time. Jasper and MC have been a shell of their 2000’s selves, and MV, Princeton, Washington are consistently bad (save for a mediocre campaign here or there). It goes without saying that this potential merger would only help Big 8 teams with SOS. And if you’re GS, HH, SR you have to like the idea of trading SS, PC, TC for Jasper, Lincoln, Boonville.1 point

It’s an “upcharge,” a very common prosecutorial tactic that is applied to criminal defendants of all colors. It’ll be pled down to a misdemeanor and he’ll get probation. Book it.1 point

Having coached at both levels myself, I can tell you that it is a HUGE jump. Even from the middle school to freshmen level! The middle schools have no governing body. You can do whatever you want! Practice as much (or little) as you want. Play as many (or few) games as you want. There are no eligibility requirements. It can be the Wild Wild West if you let it. Then you get to the high school and the IHSAA has more regulations than the Obama administration. (I know nothing about politics. I had to google that.) As with many of you, I wish these gentlemen the best of luck. But it isn't going to be easy...1 point

I can agree 100% with this. Comparing administrative duties at the MS vs. HS is apples and oranges. HS is infinitely larger.1 point

Not familiar with the school's situation, but I wonder if there are other factors at play here. Maybe (hypothetical) there was a large number of athletes who decided to not play football in high school because the program was so bad, but played in middle school for the coach who was just hired. Perhaps the administration feels by bringing him up to the high school level will get those kids back out (assuming the kids who quit liked playing for the coach in MS). Is it a big jump from MS to running an entire high school program? Absolutely. But if the school feels like he can turn the program around and do it quickly then what's the harm in trying. Maybe it's their last ditch effort at saving the dying program, where if the immediate future is uncertain anyway, what's the worst thing that can happen?1 point

Coaching at the middle school level may actually help prepare a coach more than being a coordinator or other varsity assistant. The most difficult part about being a head coach is not the coaching part, as that does not change regardless of the level, it is the administrative aspects of the job that it is impossible to prepare for. As a middle school coach, there are a number of administrative duties that parallel those of a head coach. Finding the right person for a job is as inexact a science as there is. I understand that there are any number of factors that must be weighed by candidates when choosing places to be interested in, and the same goes for the schools when evaluating candidates. I hope Gavit found the man they were looking for!1 point

No one said there aren't good middle school coaches, but you can't deny the fact that the jump from MS HC to high school varsity HC is a HUGE jump on so many different levels. That is probably why you do not see it very often and can cause some people to question that hire. Note Dame attempted their "Bold Experiment" with Gerry Faust and it didnt pan out too well, hopefully it is a different outcome in Hammond and SB.1 point

It might be a bad hire for other reasons but the notion that it is for the simple reason that he's a MS coach is straight up garbage. There are plenty of good MS coaches and can't understand why HS coaches play the holier than thou card on MS coaches esp ones in their own program.1 point

Mom records heartwarming video of police officer playing with dolls with girls who 'were afraid of cops' https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/mom-records-heartwarming-video-police-officer-playing-dolls-girls-afraid-cops-180026210.html FTA: Roper-Boswell said Fleming and the children first became acquainted when emergency crews responded to a gas leak at her apartment complex. Once the leak was declared not a threat, and Fleming realized everyone was safe, he started talking with the residents of the complex as he often does. “I was telling him that my daughter, my niece and some of the other children here were afraid of cops,” Roper-Boswell told WTVR. So when Fleming spotted the kids playing outside — and after getting their parents’ permission — he went over to them, got down on the ground and started playing too. First he joined a group of boys who were coloring, and then with the girls who were playing with dolls. Surprised by the sight of the 42-year-old officer making himself comfortable on his belly with his legs crossed like a kid, she grabbed her phone and started recording a video — which happened to take place on Valentine’s Day. But it was all in a day’s work for Fleming, who told Yahoo Lifestyle, “I’m a dad of three girls. I’ve gotten toes painted, exfoliated with mud masks, danced in princess dresses with makeup, tea parties, etc. Doll babies are like second nature to me. So me and the girls were having a blast.” The little boys, he said, reminded him of his 4-year-old son, a SpongeBob SquarePants fan. “When I noticed the young men coloring pages filled with those particular characters I just asked if I could join in because my son was in love with these characters,” he said. “They allowed me to choose one to fill in the color, and while we did that we ended up singing the theme song together. It was the best part of my day, hands down. All of these children were so polite and kind and compassionate with me and with each other. They shared their toys, their crayons, their laughs with me.” ... But Fleming has been humble in the face of all the attention he’s received since the video went viral. “Y’all give me more credit than I deserve, but I do appreciate the love,” he replied to the well-wishers. “Plus who doesn’t like playing and coloring with kids?!? It’s probably my favorite thing to do. They were so kind to me, and I’m so thankful they allowed me to play with them today.” Though he takes the praise in stride, Fleming does realize the gravity of his actions. “For me to be a catalyst for young people, regardless of race, color, creed, religion,” Fleming said. “I feel that I could be a positive change.”1 point

There’s a reason why Gavit is 32-60 this decade, playing against a very, very weak schedule. The shambles that is the School City of Hammond’s athletic program mirrors the conditions of the schools themselves. Consolidation will help. But until there’s a different philosophy and commitment at the administration level, it won’t change significantly. Why would an experienced, competent coach be interested in a program that might be gone in a year or two?1 point

Bob Prescott is more than qualified for this job, he is indeed one of the good guys in the business. He gave me a volunteer assistant job at Kankakee Valley when I was a 19 year old college student in need of a community service project. I always appreciated his refreshing honesty and realist views on things. I know at least part of the deal at Peru was that he also got a chance to coach his son Kordell, who was just another rugrat with ice cream on his face when i saw him last at KV back in the mid 2000s. I mean honestly who really gives a damn if he has a middling W-L record, because we know a multitude of factors play into the success of a football team. You can't control the talent in the pipeline, only how you develop it. Prescott is skilled in the art of molding football players into not only good athletes but also respectable young men. If we measure success in that regard, Prescott is an elite coach no matter his average W-L record, and given the right circumstances I'm convinced he can turn HN into a contender.1 point

The TRC did it for 2 years. Starting this fall we are going to play 8 conference games with 1 non-conference and then the team not on the schedule will rotate each year.1 point

Kind of like with polio eradicated, doctor's had to find other sources to get paid right? Or with one gang eradicated out of an area, the police had to find another one? You make it sound like these various terror groups are made up. My guess is that victims of a synagogue bombing don't really care whether the bomb was from a neo-Nazi, a Klansman, or an ISIS-claimed vest-bomber. Similarly, a person like James Byrd really would have cared less whether his attackers were Klan, Aryan Brotherhood, CKA, or any other dozen white-supremacist groups. Along those lines, anti-abortionists and politicians that cater to them really don't want Roe overturned because it'd be bad for the movement and some re-election campaigns.1 point

When I was in HS, both Whiting (my school) and Hobart were one of the few teams left from the Region in the playoffs. Hobart invited some of the Whiting players out to their pep rally at the Brickie Bowl. We got to listen to Coach Howell speak in the locker room, they announced us in the Bowl, it was pretty special. They also gave us a Hobart t-shirt. Loving Hobart, I wore that t-shirt under my pads from that year on in HS and 4 years in college. I am not superstitious but the shirt clearly meant something to me and I went out of my way to make sure I packed the shirt before every game. I recently grabbed a couple of storage bins from my parents house of crap my mom saved of me growing up. I opened up the first bin and right on top is that Hobart t-shirt. I told my wife the story behind it and she was disgusted that I wore the same shirt for 6 years. I tried to put it on... not happening.1 point

I'm not sure but I don't believe the baseball coaching change is connected to the football coach and AD firing. So far the Eastern board is much better than the Federal Govt in preventing leaks to the media about the reason for their actions.1 point

I think they do a really good job of getting kids overlooked by the elite schools in the Midwest. They've been in St. Louis a lot recently also. They must have a guy specifically assigned to Indianapolis.1 point

Most coaches don't like talking about their teams but I'll do it for all the fans we have on here. Last season we finished with 23 kids. 12 of those were seniors so we initially had 11 coming back. Of those 11, one moved away before we had our banquet so I was looking at 10 kids that had finished last season. I've been recruiting pretty hard and as of now, I've had 50 kids tell me they plan to play next year. Which, in reality I'll probably get 35 of those to actually play when the season starts. And of those 35, 25 will have never played or not since youth but I'll take it. It's a much better situation than last season to start with. So when someone asks me what my goal is, my goal is to play an entire JV season. No one seems to know for sure when the last time that happened here and if we could win a handful of games on Friday night to go along with that I'd be tickled. We have to find a QB, a FB, and a RB we can count on. Keith Brooks might end up being QB. He will be a sophomore. Right now he's 6-5 and 175. Really good athlete, just needs to develop some quickness. Nolan Barker played RB a lot last year but will needs to be more consistent. He's got good size at 6-2, 195 and he's decently strong but not going to run away from anyone right now. Preston Coleman is our top returning rusher and receiver. Last year he split time between football and tennis so I never felt he got consistent practice and would be much better if he didn't play tennis. But kids like tennis I suppose. Preston has decent size at 6-0, 155 and is a good athlete. We bring back 2 OL with experience. Garrett Stout 5-9, 190 started at center all year for us and T.J. Donnelly started every game at tackle minus the ones he was out with an injury. TJ is 6-2, 215 down about 25 pounds from last year. Outside of those 2, we are going to have to find some linemen. Defensively, we graduated all of our defensive backs and linebackers. Keith Brooks started at the end of the year at OLB and probably will again this season. We bring back several defensive linemen. Zach Carlisle started at NT until he tore his ACL and MCL and meniscus week 7. He should be ready to go. He's got some size at 6-4, 410. Nolan Barker, TJ Donnelly, and Garrett Stout all started at times last year. Stout will probably move back to LB and Barker may too depending on who we will have. Other than them, we will have to find some guys that want to play and are willing to learn. It's hard to project other spots because you never truly know what a kid will look like until they get out there.1 point

I personally did not game them. Why is this number so important to you, foxbat?-1 points
-
Yes, they were altered by a GID administrator. Not at my personal request however. And again, please elaborate on how I was "obfuscating story content by going after the source" when I was simply pointing out the bias behind the SPLC? Funny how when somebody starts whining about or questioning the reputation +/- and you then ask why it is so important to them the answer is invariably "but it's not".-1 points
-
You do realize, that if SPLC efforts did actually result in real improvements of pulling hate crimes and hate groups numbers lower to none, there would be no need for SPLC....... As the definition of hate crimes expands, so do the number of incidents......FY end 2017 - Around $432,000,000 in assets operating on about $45,000,000 in revenue. https://www.splcenter.org/sites/default/files/103117_afs.pdf-1 points

Bingo. With the power/influence of the KKK pretty much eliminated (thank goodness) the SPLC had to find other groups to attack in order to justify it's continued existence, and of course bring in the cash.-1 points
