I’ve got to disagree, I know for a fact this past spring I was the worst official in the state. I was told by the winning coach in a 12-0 Softball game. And just to show you how bad I really am, I was on the bases!

After 1 week. For Gibson Southern… Glad the group was tested heavily and for 4 quarters…Early on big plays hurt GS but the defense cleaned things up as the game went on… I think this was a game where both teams are glad they scheduled it and a lot was learned last night. Biggest takeaway from the stat sheet Tanner Boyd is that dude. Never easy replacing a successful QB from previous years…let alone Brady Allen…Kid came out and showed everyone he doesn’t need to be like anyone else. 23-29 for 180 yards and 2TDs….and then he put up another 130 yards on the ground for another 2TDs. I think it’s pretty darn impressive what he did last night in his first career start. On the road, 5A school, 4 Qtrs of a dogfight with a clutch drive to finish the game off with a W…I think if anyone had questions at QB or how the offense was going to be run…he answered them last night

Looks pretty good to me. Although I might want to push Mater Dei onto this list. i think if you have the #1 2A team you probably should have the #2…same with 3A and West Lafayette

Join the rest of the state, according to the fans I've sat next to at every game I've attended in multiple states at multiple levels (NFL, FBS, FCS, D3, HS, MS, Youth, Flag, my back yard, PS4, PS3, PS2, NES, Atari, and whatever that little handheld thing was back in the 80s). At some point it's not them, it's us. 100 percent. Context is important, and that wasn't your normal first down signal, if there is such a thing. I'm not part of the NFL (no fun league), but at this level things can be excitable, but need to be respectful. Show me you can make great, good, average, less than average plays and still be sportsmanlike. High school sports are, in part, here to help form student athletes into good citizens. Learn to win gracefully. On an unrelated but somewhat tangential note... last night after the GS@THS game I was in very close proximity to a kerfuffle between a (some?) THS FB players and a (some?) THS non-players (according to several THS players I ran across on the way to the locker room after the game). Those things happen, whatever. After I walked past the situation toward my vehicle I crossed paths with what turned out to be a THS Sr starter that was a significant contributor in the game. Unsolicited, he said, "Sir, I apologize, that does not represent who we are." I was somewhat taken aback by this kid leveling up in maturity and could only babble something like, "Hey, man... no big deal, things like that happen. You guys played a great game tonight." He replied, "Thank you, sir." He kept on going to the locker room. In that seven second interaction I learned why he's not an athlete that had to tell the stadium when he got a first down.

Just let your play on the field do the talking! Most of the time gestures like this are the things that cause the fights on the field. Kudos to the officials for enforcing these penalties. Definitely need more of it!!

I saw the film and both of those penalties were absolutely spot on. Only because I retired from on field officiating. 🤣

I guess I should give some context for those who don’t know. Gunner Wyman was VL’s longtime basketball coach. And they had a massive rivalry with Jasper - one that usually would not have been described as “friendly.” There are some legendary stories about things that happened in and around VL/Jasper matchups. Gunner clearly insisted on getting the last word.

That isn't a stat to hang our hats on. Like you saying your sister is a good kisser...LOL. The key in the game was us throwing 2 incompletions inside our 10 late in 2nd Q, which gave Jasper the ball with TOs and way too much time. They scored with under 30 secs and seized Big Mo. Our only TD being a a KOR is big concern IMO.

It was weird listening to the Jasper Memorial game without Walt Ferber calling the action on the radio. That man did that longer than I’ve been alive. But, the new guy was top notch.

Slick John Picanos here reporting from the lush confines of a stretch limosine. While I don't have the time to give a detailed prediction of each team and how they'll finish I will take the time to give what I think is the "most anticipated" aspect for each team leading into the season. NorthWood- Besides being the only school with two captial letters in their name, can Nate Andrews come up with a new helmet design this year?! It would seem they are running out of their traditional options of black, red, white but can I suggest a chrome design?! Also- is Nate Andrews in better shape than his players? Does he make an appearance on scout teams??? Warsaw- Bart Curtis and his fast food connoisseur-ism should be in full force down in Kosciusko County. First, I'll set the over/under at 9.5 passes completed on the season for the Tigers. What can we anticipate, though? Well- opposite of their rivals at NorthWood, the Tigers' uniforms have become more basic in the world of alternate uniforms. In fact, I don't believe they even have any orange on their road jerseys! Can we at least get a tiger paw back on the helmet, or at least the W?! The question remains- can Bart Curtis make their jerseys even more bland?! On a more serious note- can we please get a Top 5 Fast Food restaurant ranking from Coach Curtis- what a treat that would be!!! Mishawaka- The only St. Joseph County representative is home to possibly the most idyllic high school football setting in northern Indiana. However, it comes with its' challenges! How many games does the grass at Steele Stadium hold up? Can it make it even to September? With only 1 August home game, it has a chance! I must give the Cavemen credit, though, they usually use the sand/mud/dirt/clay/tufts of grass combination to their advantage. Goshen- Well what in God's Green Gables bet did Tom Wogomon lose to take on this Red Hawk endeavor?! Either way- this anticipation is obvious- can things turn around for the once proud Artists Formerly Known as the Redskins?? Northridge- After just becoming the latest NLC team to make a state championship game (only Warsaw has not) expectations are high in the Middlebury bubble! Are they too high?! Can the Raiders live up to their sense of entitlement?! I have also noticed some new construction onto the high school- I guess people can get excited about that as well... Concord- The defending champs are getting very little respect from NLCTiger07! Can I sense some hurt feelings stemming from last October? The rotating schedule will pit the Tigers and Minutemen in September for what I anticipate is the first time ever after being the regular season finale since at least 1994. Back on topic: The Minutemen have some holes to fill! Probably as many as any team in the conference. The early season schedule will be extremely telling as to where this team is headed. I think we will know after the first 4 games whether they are the real deal or if the focus of the season will be on improvement and growth leading up to the playoffs. Wawasee- In what can only be seen as a "shot across the bow" to the RedHawks, the Warriors from the lake have inserted a Native American Spear into their helmet logo (see below). For those uninformed, the Goshen helmet included a spear for several years. Culture is trying to be changed on their side of Kosciusko County and you have to admire the effort! The Warriors do indeed have a heck of a concourse in their stadium on the home side- hopefully that isn't the only product of this year's Warrior team that people talk about when leaving games. Plymouth- LAJB- "Life After John Barron"- Not really much else to be said here. The Rockies have fallen on some tough times. New coaches are usually able to bring some new energy and we will see if the pride of Marshall County and US 30 can pull the right strings to have a successful season! Off we go into Week 1- Stay healthy, eat junk food, hate your rivals, and enjoy football once again!

Heard the Lafayette Central Catholic game had the worst officiating in the state last night. Allowing numerous fights and extras after the whistle. The refs basically decided the game. Are these games reviewed by a higher official?

He said 200 yard rushers, not a billion-kajillion... Nice job, kid!

There shouldn't be a kid on an IHSAA team that hasn't been coached to not do such things. I thought both moves were worthy of flags.

Saw the WL - Harrison game last night. WL looks good this year. Harrison had four turnovers in the 2nd half alone including a pair of picks in the red zone and a fumbled kickoff after a WL score. WL's quick and runs A LOT of outside stuff from the backfield. They seemed to be less successful in the middle, except with Mullis the big QB carrying. Mullis is probably pushing 200 lbs. and looks like a fullback/lineback in the backfield. Fast and hard to bring down. Fairly varied passing game. As they've done in the past, they also get to that no-huddle offense fairly quickly. On defense, Harrison was having success between the tackles and I'm not sure why they strayed from that. WL will need to shore that up; however, in fairness, they were playing a 5A line. WL should be in decent shape for 3A as many teams are not going to be able to keep up with the speed on the corners/ends and are going to have trouble running no-huddle for most of the game ... a WL staple. Most 3A are also not going to have defensive lines/boxes that are sized to stifle WL, so they may have more success in the middle.

I see the game between Jeffersonville and Bell County got canceled for a second year in a row. 🤦🏻

Yeah, I heard lots of extra curricular activity. If what I heard was true, I could see why the series between the schools has been dormant since the late 80s. Usually rivals get that handsy, not 2 programs who never play each other. Fun fact: Warren County is one of like 3 counties in Indiana who does not have a catholic church in it's boundaries. Legend has it back in the late 1800s one tried to set up shop in Williamsport and it was ran out of town. Maybe Warren County folks just don't like catholics? Edit: I'm from Warren County, and I approve this conspiracy theory....

I believe he had the UNS on the spike as well. Two UNS is an automatic ejection. He's out next week as well. Hopefully a good lesson learned for him. He looks like a great player.

Eyewitness reports say the Ramblin' Boys of Attica are in for a long season after the showing they had last night. The Ponies of Veedersburg might have the same. That's all I got....

Yes it's arbitrary but it should be flagged. He's giving you a nice break if he doesn't flag it. I've now seen the play and what he did for the second foul was not a simple first down signal. It was a delayed action that completely warranted a flag. That was a no-brainer. Complaining about it in an online forum and the announcers giving their opinion of the call contribute to the constant lack of respect given to officials when they are doing their job correctly. The announcers were flat wrong but non-officials listening to them treat them as authorities and assume the crew was wrong. This gives fans fuel to complain about it as well.

At 1:50:30 he spiked it. That’s going to and should get flagged every time. The kid was excited after a huge run. Don’t blame him for being excited but can’t spike the ball.

You’re thinking of 3-4-6. The other parts of the God Rule are 9-9-1, which empowers the Referee to enforce any penalty he deems equitable when a team commits an unfair act for which there is no specific rule coverage, and 1-1-6 which gives the Referee the authority to rule on any situation not specifically covered by the rules, and provides his decisions are “final.”

I think everyone expected both programs to take a step back this season. I think the big difference was a couple of key transfers coming into Carroll and a couple going out of Luers. But yeah, the margin of defeat was surprising. By seasons end, I think a Fort Wayne team will qualify for Top 15. I'm just not sure who at this point. Lots of answers in Week 2. Snider takes on Carroll, North Side gets Dwenger, and Homestead squares off with Concordia. I like where you have Penn and Merrillville, a little uncertain about Westfield though. Keep this poll going. You seem to give an unbiased and honest opinion.

That game is so much fun! As a player, I loved playing against the Alice’s at Vincennes. That stadium was always rocking and having to come out from under the Vincennes stands while y’all booed us was awesome. Not so awesome, having Brewer yell at us for how embarrassed he was by our performance and then punching a hole in his hat. 😆

I'm just ready for rivalry week! It's not been kind to us the last two seasons! Nice win for the Cats tonight!

Good win for the Alice’s. Hopefully they can keep that momentum going and have a good game next week against Reitz.

Week 1 Observations - Did not see the Alices blanking out Bosse 40-0. Sounds like VL was rolling on all cylinders tonight. -Mater Dei went into the Bear Den and took an convincing 35-0 win over Central. - Let the Panthers roar over the Warriors as they were on fire against Harrison. The Panthers get a nice 39-8 win in the Bowl. - How about them Knights? Fended off a very nice Husky comeback to beat North 28-21. There are some players on both sides on the ball. - A score that raised lots of eyebrows, Jasper rolling over Memorial 34-10. While the Tigers were out a few key pieces, Jasper looked mighty, mighty solid. Will be interesting if they meet again in the sectional. Power Rankings will drop on Monday.

I think Cathedral is as good as advertised. I will give Jeff some credit, they competed better than I thought they would, just clearly overmatched. Cathedral’s offense is pretty loaded.

Thanks, but again, just a comedy of errors. Westfield was lucky to have only lost by 14. First play of the second half, a bad exchange between the QB and running back results in a fumble at the New Pall 22. Three plays later, New Pal is up 21. Westfield comes back to make a two score game, recovers an onside kick, has it down inside the 10 on 4th down, about a minute to go with a time out left, and the QB clocks the ball! Westfield had four drives go inside the New Pal 30 without scoring. They only punted one time. Now they do have a bunchh of new guys, but still. Their defense looked to be their strong suit early in the season, but they got burnt time and again by the New Pal offense. Next week won't be any easier as they host a much improved Lawrence Central team.
