The biggest issue with seeding is agreeing upon the logic used for it. Sagarin is what most people are familiar with, but it's far from perfect and dare I say "fair". Short of that, I like the idea. I would like to see the officials be granted relief from the microscope of knee pads, eye black and wrist / leg bands or at least have something that remotely resembles consistency. One week 5 players get sent off for knee pads, the next week players are wearing shorts - without issue. One week skinny wrist bands are forced to be removed, the next week it's perfectly fine. Sometimes a heavy dose of eye black is ok, sometimes it's not. Sometimes t-shirts hanging out is fine, other times it's not. We have games when a player signaling 1st down is flagged for it, but the next game it happens a dozen times without issue. I say let's stop being the fashion police and focus on the game. (And btw, I am very PRO official and realize we're lucky to have anyone willing to officiate.)4 points

2nd year in a row as B1G Coach of the Year. I have a bad feeling about the final playoff determination, as far as the Irish are concerned. If they’re left out at 10-2, I’m not going to be complaining about an injustice. They have no one to blame but themselves. Honestly, they should be 12-0 at this point. Self-inflicted wounds.3 points

For sure not the fault of the officials on the field. By saying I'd like to see the officials be granted some relief, that's what I was referring to. Relief from the directive.2 points

You’re preaching to the choir. We hate being the uniform police. But we have very strict orders that come from way above my pay grade. So, please don’t blame the officials.2 points

The problem with your formula - the problem with all multiplier solutions - is that they treat all P/Ps alike, when they clearly are not. If true competitive balance is what you are after, what is the justification for treating Andrean (75-28 in the last 8 seasons with 2 state titles) the same as Bishop Noll (9-59 with 0 tournament wins in their last 8 seasons)? That’s why the success factor approach is more valid. It addresses those P/Ps who take their inherent advantages and use them to succeed disproportionately in their class, while sparing those, like Bishop Noll, who don’t. How is an across the board multiplier more fair than that? The other reason I like the success factor approach is it applies to all schools. P/Ps are not the only schools with inherent advantages. There are public schools that are clearly advantaged socioeconomically over other publics. If they utilize those advantages to consistently compete above their class, they move up. Again, if competitive balance is the goal, that is only fair.2 points

To be honest, I’m really tired of the endless jibber jabber about who should or shouldn’t be in, and why or why not. It’s exhausting. And however it shakes out, there’s bound to be controversy, and we’ll have to listen to it all over again. And do you think it will be any different when they go to 16? No. Something radical has to be done. And I’ve got the solution. The NCAA’s FBS needs to go to an all-in tournament model. There are 136 schools in FBS. With 16 first round byes, it would take 8 rounds for a single-elimination tournament. There would be an 8 week regular season, which would mean absolutely nothing in terms of the postseason. Then the tournament would start. And to add to the drama, the byes and matchups would be determined by random drawing, say, using ping pong balls. The great thing is we know this would work. Indiana is living proof.1 point

I've never said such a thing only that it would be helpful if we chain them to a light post in the parking lot and make them officiate from there.1 point

That's why I was saying they shouldn't have moved off after they interviewed him. Should have taken the Dan Lanning, Marcus Freeman approach. It would be interesting to know what their plan was from the start, I assume they thought they could get to Cignetti, maybe Urban. At any rate, they overvalued their position.1 point

My brief research finds that with Dwenger’s victory over Roncalli, 2025 will be the first year since 2000 in which a school located in Marion County failed to win a football state title. Feel free to fact check.1 point

They absolutely were. And given there was basically a 4:1 enrollment discrepancy between the top and bottom of the old 5A, they had a legitimate complaint. There hadn't been a state champ from the bottom half of 5A enrollments in years when the split happened in 2013. Easiest thing to do politically was split 6A into two. Because if we'd have done a 32-team 1A and a 64-team 5A, now, you'd have the top half of 4A in enrollment howling because they now had to compete with schools like Decatur Central, Valpo, Whiteland and (at the time) Westfield. Interestingly, the majority of the 5A champs since the split have been success-factored 4A schools (Cathedral 4x, New Pal 3x). Columbus East was there by enrollment (barely) in 2017 but had also been a success-factored 4A. Arguably the three best 5A teams this year were New Pal, Cathedral and East Central - and all are 4A enrollments.1 point

IU is undefeated playing for a chance at the #1 seed Saturday. There isn't another team in college football that I'm afraid of this year. If ND is not only fortunate enough to make the playoff, but win their opening round game on the road and meets IU, will discuss when the time calls for it. Big bad ND who beats up on the dregs of the ACC doesn't really move me.1 point

I'm your huckleberry....I think it would be a great game and could absolutely see the Ducks beating ND, especially the way I watched them go into Seattle and handle Washington this past weekend. That was a much higher quality win than Syracuse or Stanford...IMO. I personally think that game would be a toss up1 point

The Northview game in 2019 wasn't really tied into Memorial getting SF'ed into 4A. It was just to get a one-year deal to fill the schedule because the IN/KY Border Bowl series had fallen apart after 2018, our AD at the time was a lazy @$$hole and didn't work hard enough or proactively to find an opponent and it was an easy fix to fill the open spot.1 point

Love that people hate Notre Dame for not joining a conference, apparently you included. For that reason alone, I hope they don't. Every year ND knocks at least one or two of their opponents from the Top 25. Then people say, "Notre Dame didn't play anyone in the Top 25," lol. This year it was Pittsburgh. Tell me, who in the SEC waxed Arkansas with the same dominant force that Notre Dame did? Notre Dame did it at Razorback Stadium and got their coach fired in the process. The USC win was a good one. In fact, had USC scheduled a lessor opponent than ND, they'd be in the Top 12 conversation. ND beat USC with about the same precision that Oregon did. Not sure where I said "easily" the best two loss team, but I may have. But their two loss resume is more impressive than anyone else's two losses. Alabama lost to Florida State for crying out loud. Miami lost to Louisville and SMU. Damn, ND lost to A&M and Miami by a total of 4 points. One of those losses came from a botched extra point. Let's not pretend that ND can't beat anyone in the SEC. Let's not pretend that they can't be Oregon.1 point
-
As much as the committee wants Notre Dame in the playoff, knowing they are one of the better teams, they may not have the gonads to put them in front of Miami since Miami beat them by a field goal three months ago. Compare ND's losses to any team in the field with two losses. How do they stack up? That being said, ND should EASILY be the highest ranked two loss team. Couple that with blowing out everyone else on their schedule, you're left with the #2 team in the country according to Sagarin. I'll forever consider this year's champion as illegitimate if they don't go through the Irish in the process. No one can deny it the way Notre Dame is playing. Can't say the same for Alabama or Miami.1 point

1A is probably the right answer to this specific question. Although, after looking at the 5 largest schools in 5A (Valparaiso, Warsaw, Whiteland, Merrillville, and Lafayette Jeff) I don't mind 6A getting the extra school(s) either but I certainly don't think Goshen, South Bend Adams, Chesterton, or Castle should be "forced" up. For the purpose of this exercise if I did this for a 32 team 1A, the 5 smallest 2A schools would be Fremont (283), Pioneer (286), Tecumseh (286), Fountain Central (289), and Northfield (296). 32 Team Class 1A Based on Latest IHSAA Football Enrollment Data 1. Cloverdale - 283 (1 Sectional Title) 2. Covington - 281 (0 Postseason Titles) 3. Bowman Academy - 277 (0 Postseason Titles) 4. West Washington - 277 (6 Sectionals, 4 Regionals, 1 Semi-State, 0 State Titles) 5. Triton - 274 (3 Sectional Titles) 6. North Daviess - 273 (2 Sectional Titles) 7. Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian - 270 (0 Postseason Titles) 8. Clinton Central - 268 (4 Sectional Titles, 1 Regional Title) 9. Springs Valley - 266 (4 Sectionals, 2 Regionals, 1 Semi-State, 0 State Titles) 10. South Decatur - 265 (3 Sectionals, 2 Regionals, 1 Semi-State, 1 State Title) 1990 Champions 11. North White - 264 (3 Sectionals, 3 Regionals, 2 Semi-States, 1 State Title) 1994 Champions 12. Southwood - 263 (9 Sectionals, 5 Regionals, 2 Semi-States, 1 State Title) 2002 Champions 13. North Miami - 263 (6 Sectionals, 2 Regionals, 1 Semi-States, 1 State Title) 1993 Champions 14. Purdue Polytechnic (BR) - 262 (0 Postseason Titles) 15. North Central (Farms...) - 257 (2 Sectional Titles) 16. Tri - 256 (4 Sectional Titles, 1 Regional Title) 17. Southern Wells - 252 (3 Sectionals, 3 Regionals, 1 Semi-States, 1 State Title) 2001 Champions 18. Wes-Del - 248 (1 Sectional Title) 19. Culver Community - 246 (4 Sectional Titles) 20. Union City - 244 (0 Postseason Titles) 21. South Newton - 241 (3 Sectional Titles, 1 Regional Title) 22. Caston - 241 (0 Postseason Titles) 23. Cambridge City Lincoln - 234 (0 Postseason Titles) 24. Tri-Central - 232 (3 Sectionals, 1 Regional, 1 Semi-State, 1 State Title) 2013 Champions 25. Edinburgh - 227 (0 Postseason Titles) 26. Greenwood Christian Academy - 222 (0 Postseason Titles) 27. Tri-County - 220 (3 Sectional Titles, 1 Regional Title) 28. North Vermillion - 218 (7 Sectionals, 3 Regionals, 2 Semi-States, 1 State Title) 2014 Champions 29. West Central - 209 (3 Sectional Titles, 1 Regional Title) 30. Indianapolis Tindley - 202 (0 Postseason Titles) 31. Frontier - 180 (6 Sectional Titles, 2 Regional Titles) 32. Attica - 160 (1 Sectional, 1 Regional, 1 Semi-State, 0 State Titles) I think this class would crown quite a few "new State Champs" and see quite a few more "State Championship game participants" which would help the original goal I referenced in my original post about success factor in that thread. I also think "adding" a Pioneer to this class is more detrimental to these 32 schools than it would be to add 1 Valpo or Warsaw into 6A... Might be changing my answer after this little activity. When this was set up, 5A was designated as the class that would have any extra schools if the number is above 320 (that was true at the time they made that change). I like the idea of 1A being the other team with 32 schools. Which one do you propose takes the extra teams if we have more than 320 teams?1 point

Realistically, which p/p schools, in Indiana, are controlling admissions for the purpose of staying in a certain enrollment class? I say that not to be flippant, but to take out the stand-by argument that p/ps are only allowing cream of the crop athletes and shunning everyone else while manipulating the enrollment count to make sure that they are two students below the cutoff line for the next highest classification. That gamesmanship might happen in other places ... heck, there was just a story the other day about a team that lost a game on purpose so that they could be placed in a lower competition state final bracket ... but that's not anything that I've seen here in Indiana. Frankly, rather than using multipliers that tend to make assumptions and use broad-sweeping claims that definitely don't work ... Bishop Noll, Faith Christian, Blackhawk in football, etc. ... I'd be much more interested in seeing a reduction in student numbers for schools that, as you mentioned, don't have the option of admissions. Students who can't play, shouldn't be counted in any school's enrollment numbers for classification. Yes, it tends to be true that as a percentage, p/ps tend to have less students with physical/mental disability, so for them, it's unlikely that that such an adjustment would be big enough to impact classification placement. At the same time, it's fairly certain that there will be some schools, especially in the lower and middle classes that it would result in a change of classification. I think you could also go to an extent, without double-counting, that you could throw in some lowering modifier applied to FRL. That would also allow you to catch some of the socio-economic issues in addition to disability issues as well as a classification modifier. The state already has data on both of these points, so it just now becomes an issue of the formula to make it a reality. I'd be curious to see how many schools end up with this type of class modification change. I'm not sure if it would be huge, but it starts moving the needle to thinking about class as more than just enrollment based in flat numbers. Keep Success Factor in there too, with some minor modifications to length of evaluation and points to stay ... still think it should be four years for eval and an average of a sectional a year in upper classes once moved to stay ... and I think there are the makings of shifting enrollment-based classification ..,. although the initial placements would start with enrollment, but eventually be morphed through a more modified approach to classification.1 point

Gerrymandering is a time honored political dirty trick. What gets me is that, in the past, the people drawing the maps at least articulated a half-ass justification for what they are doing. These people just come right out and say we’re doing this to keep the Republicans in power. No pretense. Just naked political advantage. Shameful is too mild a term.1 point
