Parents sway a government school administration once again:   "My little Jimmy got yelled at by Mr. Wright. Now his widdle feelings are hurt.  Boo Hoo."

Ageism?

Very sad that it ended like that, but with rare exception this is how it goes for old coaches.  There is always a new savior over the horizon.

This is pretty much the case... I only coached against him once years ago, but it was one of those nights that you definitely remember; to be on the same field as a legend... and have that legend clock you by 50...

He was a character, that’s for sure. I refereed the 2006 semistate game vs. South Newton. In the middle of the game there was a long pass catch and run down the Sheridan sideline. I saw Coach Bud sprinting down the sidelines, in step with the ball carrier. He tripped, went into a perfect forward roll back up to his feet, and continued on as if nothing had happened. He was 66 yrs. old at the time!

Where does this leave Kevin Wright? He would seem to be the "heir apparent" but does now want the head coaching job under these circumstances?

Kevin Wright has taken the Head Coaching position at Carmel. So that decision has already been made.

For any coach that gets hired to take the Sheridan HC job they will have some big shoes to fill. As @Bobref mentioned they might want to work on their tumbling/gymnastics skills too.

Many great memories of Coach Wright and Blackhawk vs Bombers back in early 2000's.

A wonderful Chili pre game with @Ballhawk

A Purdue Football Clinic where Coach Wright about choked on a chicken wing when someone at the table was talking about one of their kids running a 4.4 40.......coach leaves, then he mutters, "Brett Law never ran a 4.4, no way that kid is a 4.4".   Always competing !!

I hope Coach wins another ring with Carmel (if that is where he winds up)

Do we still have any posters from Sheridan on this forum?? How is this being taken within the community??

The community is livid right now. The school has essentially been quite throughout this whole ordeal going back to the suspension. The community wants answers, and quite frankly, the school is ignoring everyone.

Every football player I have ever met runs a 4.4 40...then runs +11.50 in the 100 later that spring.

I remember in 2011, after LCC had beaten Sheridan in semi-state at LaRocca, I waited by the gate so my son, who was five at the time, and I could be close by to see Coach Wright exit the field.  As he passed by, I pointed him out to my son.  My son asked, "Who is that guy?"  The only answer that came to my lips at that time was, "He's a legend."

Coach Wright never wanted to leave the Hoosier Conference either but was out voted by other members of the athletic dept back in the day , he wanted to continue to compete against LCC

Well...reading "between the lines" so to speak from Coach Wright in his press release - sounds like you have them. It was "quit or be fired..."

It appears a statement has been released by the Sheridan school board:  https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/high-school/2024/12/04/sheridan-school-board-refutes-bud-wright-resign-or-be-fired-statement-ihsaa-football-indiana/76766754007/?tbref=hp

The Sheridan school board of trustees issued a statement Wednesday in response to longtime football coach Bud Wright’s assertion he was asked to “resign or be fired” after 59 years at Sheridan and a state-record 464 victories.

In a statement from school board of trustees president Dan Fleming, the school said it worked with Wright, his legal advisor and family in September to reach a mutual agreement the 2024 season would be his final year as head coach.

“Although SCS offered to announce his retirement then, coach Wright chose not to do so, and the school respected his decision,” Fleming wrote. “Plans were also discussed to celebrate his career during the last home football game of the regular season; however, coach Wright declined this as well.”

In September, the 83-year-old coach was “placed on administrative leave while a review of the program took place.” Wright said this decision was made due to complaints from parents and players about his coaching style. He was reinstated the following week with associate coaches Kevin Wright (his son) and Jake Chesney in place.

“As part of the agreement made in September, SCS appointed two associate head coaches to manage day-to-day operations and oversee game day activities,” Fleming wrote. “Coach Wright fully supported the plan and the decision to announce his retirement.”

Fleming went on to write the parties agreed “Wright would make his retirement announcement before January 1, 2025. The announcement made yesterday was not in line with that agreement.”

Wright called it a resignation, not a retirement, and said the relationship with the administration has deteriorated over the past three years. He is 463-216 during his 59 years at Sheridan and 464-219 overall, including one year at Mt. Ayr in 1965.

“We deeply respect and appreciate all that Coach Wright has done for the high school football program, the Sheridan Community, and beyond,” Fleming wrote. “His legacy will continue to be honored as future Blackhawks take the field at Bud Wright Stadium. SCS will begin the search for our next coach immediately to ensure the continued success of the program.”

That won't do them any favors. The community is mad at the school for this, and now the School Board will likely take just as much blame.

The community is sad, mad, livid, every emotion in the world. He deserved better than this.

Would have been some real barn burners! IMO, that 2011 semi-state game was the state championship game that year.

The Sheridan community needs to do what a fellow conference school's community did a few years ago.

Community was upset with fb coach and Athletic Director, voted the school board out, and the 1st thing the new board did was push out the AD and football coach.

But at least this gives the town something else to talk about besides their monthly water bills.
