I can tell you that coaches don't have to play their varsity players during the varsity segments and some do not...at least not for the whole designated segment.

Your questions are definitely valid. I have heard coaches say the only way to ‘win’ the scrimmage is to get out with everyone healthy. It still can be a valuable dress rehearsal though.

I would guess it’s more of a coach’s preference as opposed to regional/parts of the state. Some want to treat scrimmage like week 3 of the NFL preseason and starters play into the second half. Others are more like week 4 - one series and done.

I think overall it’s worthwhile. But matching up against the right opponent is the biggest thing, IMO.

Personally I think it also depends on the makeup of your team.  If you have a ton of returning starters, you may play them for a series and then use it to develop your #2s.  On the other hand, if you have a whole new team, then you might be more likely to use your starters for a larger portion since they often need every rep that they can get.

There are two formats approved and the coaches much choose one of them. One involves kicking plays and the other doesn't. Both have sets for "reserves". It doesn't say varsity #2, JV, or freshmen. I'm sure that varies. It's not something the officials worry or care about. It seems like the coaches have always talked through this before the scrimmage. I've sensed they usually have JV in one segment and freshmen on the other. The varsity sets may mix 1s and 2s.

Cathedral will be at Franklin Central, 7PM.

Most coaches use this scrimmage to get most, if not all, their players on video.  That way they can further evaluate what they have.  Of course for some it will be a short dress rehearsal.

I hope to see some Irish fans at FC Friday night!

Could you envision coaches waiving a set or sets of plays? (Mutually agreed by coaches of course.)

Given the other constraints - 15 consecutive and 48 total, I could see a small A/2A not really having enough bodies to play the 15-10-12-8-8 format.

That might make the jamboree format a better option? I’m not really familiar with those, I have only attended option B scrimmages.

There are two jamboree formats going on in the South this Friday.  There will be three teams at each.  It will be broken into three 15 minute periods.  Not sure how it is going to work?!?

I use to love playing in a jamboree...we always had a conference jamboree...I enjoyed it...

The format is far fewer plays than a normal game so if they can't handle this number of plays I'm not sure how they would handle a game the following week.

A couple of observations:

Kudos to the new staff at Crown Point.  Unless I am mistaken and they have always taken on Penn?

West Side at Valpo?  Yikes.

CP has scrimmaged Penn for numerous years. This is not brand new.

Gotcha.  I stand corrected...

West Side/Valpo though?  Ehh...

No biggie. Scrimmages really aren’t publicized besides in your area.

I had no idea most of those schools listed, scrimmage each other.

When scrimmages began in the fall of 1995, at Lake Central, we would scrimmage Valpo. I am not sure when they stopped scrimmaging each other, but my guess would be when LC joined the DAC in 2003.

IndyCar qualifying taking place at 7PM on Friday at IMS , just about 1.5 miles away from Johnson Field. Should make for some pretty awesome background noise as the Stars scrimmage the Sparkplugs!

Good job Andrean and CMA working this out on short notice.

Still no reason as to the why, huh?
